Personal Revival

Turn with me to beginning in verse 3.
We know these verses as “The Beatitudes.” This title is taken from the Latin word for “blessings.”
(Blessed or Bless..ed if you are spiritual.)
Matthew 5:3–12 NIV
3 “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. 4 Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted. 5 Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth. 6 Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled. 7 Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy. 8 Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God. 9 Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God. 10 Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. 11 “Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me. 12 Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.
Matthew 5:
Now we could do a series on the Beatitudes but I would like us to focus on one specific verse.
Now if I were to ask each here “Who would like to be blessed?”, I’m sure most if not all would say yes.
If I were to ask who here would like to experience revival, most if not all, again, would say yes.
Revival doesn’t begin at a church service or with a Billy Graham sermon. It begins with Christ and according to God’s Word, Christ has taken residence in each of our hearts if we have repented before Him.
Join me as we take a look at the following verse to see how we can experience revival in our relationship with the Lord.
Matthew 5:6 NIV
6 Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled.
Have really hungered and had a great thirst? In my life there have been many times I have hungered and had a great thirst.
As I was ministering in Sierra Leone, Africa, I went to visit a “queen.” Now at this point I was in Africa for over a week and only had “cool” water to drink. Not even “cold” water because of the heat.
Visiting this queen she wanted to give me her very best and she had a servant bring an ice cold Coca-Cola. Now that quenched my thirst.
This must be what heaven will be like.
Blessed
Bless-ed if you are spiritual.
Simply means happy or fortunate.
Who wants to be happy? I know I do.
Happiness and joy come when we hunger and thirst for righteousness.
Hunger and thirst
For the most part they are self explanatory.
If you would look these words up in an English dictionary the first definition for both has these words as nouns.
When you look at these words in the Biblical Greek they are verbs. There is action to them. They are active, they are present. God’s Word is alive and it is for us today.
To hunger and thirst for righteousness and for the Lord is an action, constantly in motion moving toward your goal.
Righteousness
What do we know about Righteousness?
We know that scripture tells us that...
Romans 3:10 NIV
10 As it is written: “There is no one righteous, not even one;
We see through scripture that we are not here and know that is where we want to be and that helps brings the “verb” into play. Knowing that we are always working toward our goal.
We as followers of Christ want revival. We shout for revival, we sing for revival. We search for revival and expect our pastor to bring it. We seek it out and we go to revival gatherings with amazing speakers. Some may even believe with the passing of Billy Graham that America has missed its chance for revival.
We must understand that revival doesn’t come from any man or woman, pastor or evangelist, church services or conferences.
Revival comes in our lives through Jesus Christ when we hunger and thirst for righteousness.
Revival comes when we seek Christ on our knees, in our hearts and through His Word daily.
You want revival? Then “hunger and thirst for righteousness...”
Matthew 5:6 NIV
6 Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled.
Jesus Christ Himself is speaking.
We will be blessed when we “hunger and thirst for righteousness.”
We will be “filled” when we hunger and thirst for righteousness.
