Songs about the Son of Man_2

The Angels Song

Luke 2:13-14

This passage of the Bible describes in detail the birth of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.  That is the cause of celebration for the Christmas season.  It is good for us to be reminded from time to time that Jesus is the reason for the season.  What we are considering this season for the Scriptures are what I have called Songs about the Son of Man.  I think if we are going to sing Christmas songs, the song should say something.    Last week we considered the song or hymn that Mary spoke after learning that she would be the one to carry and deliver Jesus.  That was a song that meditated on some truths about Christ before His birth, and this morning we are going to consider a song that occurred on the night of Christ’s birth.  This song was sung by angels, God’s ministering spirits.  Angels played a large role in the birth of Christ.  It was an angel that told both Mary and Joseph about the coming Lord.  It was angel that appeared to the shepherd’s and told them of the glad tidings of great joy.  That a Saviour was born in the city of David, and that they would find Him in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger.  What a blessing it must have been to be able to broadcast such exciting news. Then suddenly, a multitude of the heavenly host broke out in praise to God with just a few words that we are going to look at this morning in a sermon called the Angels Song.

1.  The reason for the song.

A.  Glory to God in the highest. The angels were accustomed to giving glory to God, for that is one of their missions, their built in sense of duty.  The angels have knowledge that God is desirous of glory, and is worthy of all of the glory.

Isaiah 42:8 I am the LORD: that is my name: and my glory will I not give to another, neither my praise to graven images.

The angels more than any other creature understand the character of God, and they are dedicated to magnifying His character.  But glory to God in the highest has more depth and spiritual meaning than the angels realizing who God is, they realized what God has done.  God is being elevated to His highest degree of glory, because He has sent His Son Jesus into the world.

John 3:16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.  Not only does the Son of God reflect the Father by being full of grace and truth, but He really is His glory.

Hebrews 1:1-3 God, who at sundry times and in divers manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets, Hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the worlds; Who being the brightness of his glory, and the express image of his person, and upholding all things by the word of his power, when he had by himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high;  The birth of Christ is something to be excited about, but the life of Christ (justice, mercy, holiness, and wisdom) as a whole is going to bring light on God in such a way that He will be glorified in the heart of  man as never before.  Yes God was glorified in creation, but much more in redemption. Through Christ we see the complete revelation of God’s plan for mankind.  Glory to God in the Highest!

B.  On earth peace.  People of this day were under a false sense of peace.  They were living in the time known as the pax romana, the peace of Rome.  The Roman Empire was not at war with any one, and the people were experiencing for the first time a sense of world peace.  That is not the kind of peace that the angel is singing about..

Isaiah 9:6 For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counseller, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.

You see the Gospel of Christ is a message of peace.

Romans 10:15 And how shall they preach, except they be sent? as it is written, How beautiful are the feet of them that preach the gospel of peace, and bring glad tidings of good things!  It is a message of peace because it allows man to have real peace with God, and the Bible explains how that peace is afforded to us.  It is a peace the saves.

Colossians 1:20 And, having made peace through the blood of his cross, by him to reconcile all things unto himself; by him, I say, whether they be things in earth, or things in heaven.

Romans 5:1 Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ:  This peace is obtained by trusting Christ as Saviour.

It is a peace that settles.

Philippians 4:6-7 Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.

It is a peace that stands.

2 Thessalonians 3:16 Now the Lord of peace himself give you peace always by all means. The Lord be with you all.

C.  Good will towards men.  It is important for mankind to realize that God is not only a God of judgment, but a God of mercy.  For nearly 2,000 years, man had been under the Law the was full of rules and regulations, that had the sentence of death for breaking many of its guidelines.  They had heard of the Great Flood that nearly wiped all of mankind from the face of the earth.  For many, God was one that was to be feared, but man did not understand how to love God.  So God sent His Son, to show us that He does love us, and that we can love Him back.

1 John 4:19 We love him, because he first loved us.

2.  The response to the song. I want to close the message this morning by asking you to consider what will you do with the words of the angels song?  Just look at our examples in the text this morning.  The angel’s song set the shepherd’s into action.  They went to Bethlehem.  They found Christ.  They told the people what they had seen.  Some wondered?  They at least questioned in their hearts the account they had heard.  Don’t be close minded and hard hearted to God’s message.  If you are not saved this morning, you need to ask yourself, why did Jesus come?  Mary pondered.  She looked at it with a deeper reflection.  She had been given a divine revelation earlier.  She had realized her need of a Saviour, now she was looking in the face of God’s Son.  It would do us good from time to time to really meditate on all that God has done for us, all that He means to us, and all that He is going to do.
