Are you are rich?

to be saved

to be assured

to be good enough

You keep the commandments

You are rich

as compared to the world & history

we fare sumptuously

you have much to comfort and distract you

Who then can be saved? With man it is impossible!
we fare sumptuously
and God is not impressed

Who do you seek?

you love your life

Mark 10:22 ESV
Disheartened by the saying, he went away sorrowful, for he had great possessions.
John 3:19–20 ESV
And this is the judgment: the light has come into the world, and people loved the darkness rather than the light because their works were evil. For everyone who does wicked things hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his works should be exposed.
I could never be a part of a church that...
gospel?
Spirit leading?
Bible grounded?
I could never serve a God who...
condemns sin
doesn’t agree with me
I can’t believe the gospel if it requires me to give up _________________
Luke 14:25–33 ESV
Now great crowds accompanied him, and he turned and said to them, “If anyone comes to me and does not hate his own father and mother and wife and children and brothers and sisters, yes, and even his own life, he cannot be my disciple. Whoever does not bear his own cross and come after me cannot be my disciple. For which of you, desiring to build a tower, does not first sit down and count the cost, whether he has enough to complete it? Otherwise, when he has laid a foundation and is not able to finish, all who see it begin to mock him, saying, ‘This man began to build and was not able to finish.’ Or what king, going out to encounter another king in war, will not sit down first and deliberate whether he is able with ten thousand to meet him who comes against him with twenty thousand? And if not, while the other is yet a great way off, he sends a delegation and asks for terms of peace. So therefore, any one of you who does not renounce all that he has cannot be my disciple.
My salvation cost Jesus His life; what makes me think it will cost me less?
Invictus by 19th ce poet William Henley
It matters not how strait the gate, How charged with punishments the scroll, I am the master of my fate, I am the captain of my soul.
Black as the pit from pole to pole,
I thank whatever gods may be
      For my unconquerable soul.
In the fell clutch of circumstance
How charged with punishments the scroll,
I have not winced nor cried aloud.
Under the bludgeonings of chance
My head is bloody, but unbowed.
Beyond this place of wrath and tears
I am the master of my fate,
Looms but the Horror of the shade,
And yet the menace of the years
Finds and shall find me unafraid.
It matters not how strait the gate,
I am the captain of my soul.
How charged with punishments the scroll,
I am the master of my fate,
I am the captain of my soul.
I can’t prioritize the church or learning the Bible because I’m too busy with life
Clear the Stage by Jimmy Needham
We must not worship something that's not even worth it Clear the stage, make some space for the one who deserves it Anything I put before my God is an idol Anything I want with all my heart is an idol Anything I can't stop thinking of, is an idol Anything that I give all my love, is an idol

Are you are looking for something to do?

Mark 10:17 ESV
And as he was setting out on his journey, a man ran up and knelt before him and asked him, “Good Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?”
Mark

to be saved

Mark 10:17 ESV
And as he was setting out on his journey, a man ran up and knelt before him and asked him, “Good Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?”
Ephesians 2:8–9 ESV
For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast.
You cannot get saved, you must be saved
Philippians 3:12 ESV
Not that I have already obtained this or am already perfect, but I press on to make it my own, because Christ Jesus has made me his own.
The angel told Joseph to name Mary’s child Jesus not because he would help his people get saved, but rather that he would save his people; and that is exactly what He does.
Romans 10:5–9 ESV
For Moses writes about the righteousness that is based on the law, that the person who does the commandments shall live by them. But the righteousness based on faith says, “Do not say in your heart, ‘Who will ascend into heaven?’ ” (that is, to bring Christ down) “or ‘Who will descend into the abyss?’ ” (that is, to bring Christ up from the dead). But what does it say? “The word is near you, in your mouth and in your heart” (that is, the word of faith that we proclaim); because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.
There is no such thing as enough
To add the word enough after prayer, believing, repenting, etc. is to go back to DOING to be saved
Mark 1:15 ESV
and saying, “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand; repent and believe in the gospel.”
Mark 1:14–15 ESV
Now after John was arrested, Jesus came into Galilee, proclaiming the gospel of God, and saying, “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand; repent and believe in the gospel.”
The only enough is that the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus was enough
Isaiah 53:10–11 ESV
Yet it was the will of the Lord to crush him; he has put him to grief; when his soul makes an offering for guilt, he shall see his offspring; he shall prolong his days; the will of the Lord shall prosper in his hand. Out of the anguish of his soul he shall see and be satisfied; by his knowledge shall the righteous one, my servant, make many to be accounted righteous, and he shall bear their iniquities.

to be assured

Mark 10:20 ESV
And he said to him, “Teacher, all these I have kept from my youth.”
mark 10:20
2 Peter 1:5–11 ESV
For this very reason, make every effort to supplement your faith with virtue, and virtue with knowledge, and knowledge with self-control, and self-control with steadfastness, and steadfastness with godliness, and godliness with brotherly affection, and brotherly affection with love. For if these qualities are yours and are increasing, they keep you from being ineffective or unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. For whoever lacks these qualities is so nearsighted that he is blind, having forgotten that he was cleansed from his former sins. Therefore, brothers, be all the more diligent to confirm your calling and election, for if you practice these qualities you will never fall. For in this way there will be richly provided for you an entrance into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
What Peter is encouraging is that same striving for perfection that Paul spoke of in .
Galatians 2:20 ESV
I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.
Both Peter and Paul worked hard out of worship and duty and love and were well assured, but they were both confident in their salvation.
Philippians 2:12 ESV
Therefore, my beloved, as you have always obeyed, so now, not only as in my presence but much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling,
It is because I am saved; because Christ has made me His own, that I

to balance the scale

I know I have sinned, but I also have done _________________
I’m sure that God understands that I ______________________
I know I was speeding, officer, but yesterday I drove a full 5mph under the limit all day.
Yes, I just killed this man, but I give blood regularly to save lives
It is impossible to balance the scale when perfection is the standard; Jesus is the standard
Who then can be saved? With man it is impossible!

Seek the Lord

Who do you seek?

Who will you seek?

Amos 5:1–7 ESV
Hear this word that I take up over you in lamentation, O house of Israel: “Fallen, no more to rise, is the virgin Israel; forsaken on her land, with none to raise her up.” For thus says the Lord God: “The city that went out a thousand shall have a hundred left, and that which went out a hundred shall have ten left to the house of Israel.” For thus says the Lord to the house of Israel: “Seek me and live; but do not seek Bethel, and do not enter into Gilgal or cross over to Beersheba; for Gilgal shall surely go into exile, and Bethel shall come to nothing.” Seek the Lord and live, lest he break out like fire in the house of Joseph, and it devour, with none to quench it for Bethel, O you who turn justice to wormwood and cast down righteousness to the earth!
amos
Bethel - “House of God” / watershed ~11mi north of Jerusalem where Abram stayed, important historic and religious city for Israel
Gilgal - a place where OT prophets lived, where Joshua erected the stone altar after crossing the Jordan
Beersheba - Where God spoke to Jacob and made covenant with him; a place of cultural and religious significance
in every one of those cities, idol worship had developed
in every one of those cities, idol worship had developed
2 Kings 18:4 ESV
He removed the high places and broke the pillars and cut down the Asherah. And he broke in pieces the bronze serpent that Moses had made, for until those days the people of Israel had made offerings to it (it was called Nehushtan).
Do not return to what is familiar, what is traditional, what is generally acceptable.
Seek God and Him alone and be saved!
Continue seeking God and Him alone and we will be preserved!
Mark 10:27 ESV
Jesus looked at them and said, “With man it is impossible, but not with God. For all things are possible with God.”
Seeking God can be costly, but look at the options:
Not seeking God = devoured by fire
Seeking God = eternal life
Who can and will be saved? Who can and will be preserved? Those who seek the Lord and Him alone.
Who can and will be saved? only those who seek the Lord. The message of the prophet Amos rings out today: Seek the Lord and Live! Sadly, the example of the young man from also is with us today: loving our lives and our sins more than God. May God help us as individuals, families, and as a church family to seek God and Him alone; for His eternal glory and our own good.
