John 9:8 NIV84
His neighbors and those who had formerly seen him begging asked, “Isn’t this the same man who used to sit and beg?”
John 9:
Blind from birth, this man would most likely go to the same spot daily and earn his living as a beggar. One day he was blind, the next day he was without his stick and beggar’s basket, and probably marveling at the beauty of God’s house.
Some believed it was him, others could not believe the miracle of sight could happen.
Two questions emerge: Was this really the blind beggar that could now see? Who caused him to see?
John 9:9 NIV84
Some claimed that he was. Others said, “No, he only looks like him.” But he himself insisted, “I am the man.”
If you were this man, would you profess that you were him or deny it?
When we are saved and enlightened by the grace of God, we should own the fact that it was through God that the blessing came forth.
1 Timothy 1:13–14 NIV84
Even though I was once a blasphemer and a persecutor and a violent man, I was shown mercy because I acted in ignorance and unbelief. The grace of our Lord was poured out on me abundantly, along with the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus.
1 Timothy
We need not be ashamed when Jesus intervenes in our lives, but we should rejoice, be thankful and proclaim the good news.
John 9:10 NIV84
“How then were your eyes opened?” they demanded.
There was no fanfare. There was no performance on a stage.
Psalm 111:2 NIV84
Great are the works of the Lord; they are pondered by all who delight in them.
It is good to observe the way God works.
Why should we respond when we are asked, “How have your spiritual eyes been opened?”
John 9:11 NIV84
He replied, “The man they call Jesus made some mud and put it on my eyes. He told me to go to Siloam and wash. So I went and washed, and then I could see.”
The man gives a full account. Let’s be careful not to discount what Jesus has done in our lives.
Why should we communicate what Jesus has done for us?
We when we communicate the truth of how Jesus has impacted us, it brings glory to God and it gives instruction and encouragement to others.
Psalm 34:4–6 NIV84
I sought the Lord, and he answered me; he delivered me from all my fears. Those who look to him are radiant; their faces are never covered with shame. This poor man called, and the Lord heard him; he saved him out of all his troubles.
Psalm
“God’s favors are lost upon us when they are lost with us, and go no further.” -Matthew Henry
John 9:12 NIV84
“Where is this man?” they asked him. “I don’t know,” he said.
The healed beggar did not know the identity of Jesus. He had not see Him before, only heard His voice. At this point, the man was healed but not saved. The light had dawned but it would grow brighter when he saw Jesus face to face and worshiped Him.
Proverbs 4:18 NIV84
The path of the righteous is like the first gleam of dawn, shining ever brighter till the full light of day.
Incidentally, this is one of at least 12 times in John’s Gospel that Jesus is called a man. John emphasizes that Jesus is God but beautifully shows us that Jesus was also a true man.
The Incarnation was not an illusion.
1 John 1:1–4 NIV84
That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked at and our hands have touched—this we proclaim concerning the Word of life. The life appeared; we have seen it and testify to it, and we proclaim to you the eternal life, which was with the Father and has appeared to us. We proclaim to you what we have seen and heard, so that you also may have fellowship with us. And our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son, Jesus Christ. We write this to make our joy complete.
1 John 1:1-
We should be reminded that what Jesus did was the fulfillment of prophecy.
Isaiah 29:18 NIV84
In that day the deaf will hear the words of the scroll, and out of gloom and darkness the eyes of the blind will see.
Isaiah 35:5 NIV84
Then will the eyes of the blind be opened and the ears of the deaf unstopped.
Isaiah 42:7 NIV84
to open eyes that are blind, to free captives from prison and to release from the dungeon those who sit in darkness.
This blind beggar who had his sight restored will be able to see things later on in this chapter that we would all do well to see! His eyes both physically and spiritually were opened.
