Live like Leaders. How’s it going? Daniel/Discipline.
Leadership is using your influence.

What would you look for if you were responsible for hiring the next boss of a major company?

what traits/features would you look for in a new company boss? Experience, education, strong personality, dresses well, handsome, tall, etc.

What part of a leader do you think matters most to God?

Out of all the choices: looks, qualifications, education, experience, discipline even. What matters most?

Story of David

King Saul
Started well, went bad.
Samuel = prophet. He was upset with Saul. God heard his prayers and told him to go, find, and bless the man God was going to chose to be king next.
Here’s the story of what happened. There’s a huge lesson in leadership for us!
1 Samuel 16:1–13 CSB
The Lord said to Samuel, “How long are you going to mourn for Saul, since I have rejected him as king over Israel? Fill your horn with oil and go. I am sending you to Jesse of Bethlehem because I have selected a king from his sons.” Samuel asked, “How can I go? Saul will hear about it and kill me!” The Lord answered, “Take a young cow with you and say, ‘I have come to sacrifice to the Lord.’ Then invite Jesse to the sacrifice, and I will let you know what you are to do. You are to anoint for me the one I indicate to you.” Samuel did what the Lord directed and went to Bethlehem. When the elders of the town met him, they trembled and asked, “Do you come in peace?” “In peace,” he replied. “I’ve come to sacrifice to the Lord. Consecrate yourselves and come with me to the sacrifice.” Then he consecrated Jesse and his sons and invited them to the sacrifice. When they arrived, Samuel saw Eliab and said, “Certainly the Lord’s anointed one is here before him.” But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not look at his appearance or his stature because I have rejected him. Humans do not see what the Lord sees, for humans see what is visible, but the Lord sees the heart.” Jesse called Abinadab and presented him to Samuel. “The Lord hasn’t chosen this one either,” Samuel said. Then Jesse presented Shammah, but Samuel said, “The Lord hasn’t chosen this one either.” After Jesse presented seven of his sons to him, Samuel told Jesse, “The Lord hasn’t chosen any of these.” Samuel asked him, “Are these all the sons you have?” “There is still the youngest,” he answered, “but right now he’s tending the sheep.” Samuel told Jesse, “Send for him. We won’t sit down to eat until he gets here.” So Jesse sent for him. He had beautiful eyes and a healthy, handsome appearance. Then the Lord said, “Anoint him, for he is the one.” So Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him in the presence of his brothers, and the Spirit of the Lord came powerfully on David from that day forward. Then Samuel set out and went to Ramah.

The Heart of a leader is what matters most to God.

It’s all about heart! God looks at our hearts. Not literally, he doesn’t hold up an x-ray machine and is like, “dude, nice aorta! You’re pulmonary valve is lit.” NO. When we talk about heart, we talk about your character. Who you really are. Who you are when you’re by yourself and no one is watching. Who you are in your thoughts. Who you are when you have an opportunity to do what is right. So, who are you? That is what this idea of “heart” is all about.

How is your heart?

Tonight is a chance to have a heart-screening to make sure we’re healthy. The reality is, there are some pretty unhealthy hearts in this room. Honestly, at times, I let my heart get pretty unhealthy. The condition of our hearts is such an intimate, personal thing. We’re probably decent judges of our own outward appearance. For example, I know I should lose a few pounds, look like a baby when I shave my beard, and has good fashion sense like once a week. But it’s hard to look in a mirror for your heart.
Hebrews 4:12 CSB
For the word of God is living and effective and sharper than any double-edged sword, penetrating as far as the separation of soul and spirit, joints and marrow. It is able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart.
Luke 6:45 CSB
A good person produces good out of the good stored up in his heart. An evil person produces evil out of the evil stored up in his heart, for his mouth speaks from the overflow of the heart.
before a leader can lead anyone else, they need to be caring for their own heart. They need to give their hearts a check-up. We’re supposed to love/serve others. Too often we lead/serve to get something in return. To get attention, support, affirmation, etc.

A Healthy Leader has a Healthy Heart.

We’ve got work to do. David is a good example to us.
Acts 13:22 CSB
After removing him, he raised up David as their king and testified about him: ‘I have found David the son of Jesse to be a man after my own heart, who will carry out all my will.’

Can you imagine?

Can you imagine if you wanted to be a leader. If you worked hard to be the best at what you do. You practice, you keep yourself disciplined, you’re focused. On the outside you have everything going for you. You look the part, you talk the part, you act the part. ALL of that would be useless if your heart was muck. I fear that many of you are on that path. You’ve figured out the system. Saying the right things, looking good, impressing men. But you’re not fooling God. Sooner or later, what’s in your heart will reveal itself and your leadership skills will be ruined. Fake it until you make it is very wrong when it comes to our hearts.
Psalm 51:10 CSB
God, create a clean heart for me and renew a steadfast spirit within me.

The heart of a leader is the most important part of a leader
