Introduction

Well it is an honor for me to be able to fill in for Gus this week. My name is Mark LaBolle and I am a student at Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. I am a veteran of the Air Force and I am originally from Idaho
SLOW DOWN
So today I plan to continue on in the discussion on Luke right where Gus left off. Today we are going to continue our discussion on the early life of Jesus, by talking about the time when Jesus was 12 and he travelled to Jerusalem with His parents for the Passover.
However, before we get into that, I want to remind you of where we came from and where we are going.
The big point: Proclamation
Those who proclaimed
rich and poor (
Young and Old (The baby John the Baptist and the widow Anna)
common and holy (Shepherds and Nathan)
Those who garnered esteem and those who didn’t (Angel and Mary)
They are proclaiming that the coming Messiah is here.
The Son of God
The heir of the throne of David
The coming Messiah
God is working in marvelous ways:
Zechariah and Elizabeth
Binding of the tongue and ears
Release of the binding
Mary
Angel with Z and M / Angels with the shepherds
Prophecies (Angels and Nathan)
Jesus is the Son of God
The angel tells Mary twice
Elizabeth declared it to Mary
Luke focuses on it in his genealogy
God Himself declares it at the baptism
Jesus Himself declares it in the passage we have today
The Theme of the Orderly account
SLOOOOWWW DOOOWWWWNN

The Humanity of Jesus

What I want to do this evening is to take this theme of the Son of God and the theme that Luke sets out in the book of giving an orderly account
As we consider the backdrop behind this passage and what’s coming ahead, this passage stands out because of its plainness.
The humanity of Jesus- He is growing in wisdom
Jesus is on His first trip to Jerusalem for the Passover
Jesus is on His first trip to Jerusalem for the Passover
Jesus is on His first trip to Jerusalem for the Passover
Picture the scene going to Jerusalem and the culture we see
Jerusalem quadrupling in size
Picture Jesus as we should see Him
See what this passage shows us about the culture
Mary and Joseph don’t know Jesus is gone for the first day
Jerusalem during the time of the Passover
Picture Jesus as we should see Him
Jesus is focused on obeying His Father in heaven. And this brings us back to our theme of Jesus growing in wisdom.
Lastly, before we consider the Deity of Jesus, consider that after the event he humbly submitted to His earthly parents

The Deity of Jesus

The Deity of Jesus- Now I want to turn to consider the display of the Deity of Jesus
Now I want to turn to consider the display of the Deity of Jesus
First, consider the story after Mary and Joseph figure out that Jesus is missing.
What did they think Jesus was doing? Why did it take 3 days.
Think of it from the positive side
Think about what it would be like to find your son, after 3 days, still alive and well
Then we see Jesus display his Deity in His statement: “Why were you looking for me? Did you not know that I must be in my Father’s house?”
I think that, again, it’s worthy to note that God only speaks directly 2 times in the first 3 chapters of Luke and they both have the same theme of Jesus as the Son of God
For me, it’s too easy to see Jesus as being inconsiderate
Think of Jesus’ conviction
Why were you looking for me?
Think of Jesus’ focus
Think of Jesus’ obedience
Active duty military man can’t go home.
There is a sense to Jesus’ statement that says that He must be in His Father’s house and doing the Father’s work
Why did it take you 3 days to find me?
They should have known where Jesus would be
Why were you looking for me?
In this sense, Jesus is surprised they didn’ t know what He would be doing.
He had a job to do and a mission to complete
He was not like any other child
He was the Son of God

Conclusion- Marvel

The last thing I quickly want to look at as we close is the response of the people
The last thing I quickly want to look at as we close is the response of the people
Marvel
Only Mary cherishes these things in her heart
Let me call you to remember this wonderful Christ. This God-man who came to Earth to die for our sins.
He must be God
He must be man
