Recap from last week’s sermon:

We are God’s workmanship
Created to display God’s glory on creation
Created to bring restoration to the world
God calls his movement to be the epicenter of change

The context of the passage:

There were people who claimed to follow the way of Jesus but let empty talk (arguments over false teachings to drive them away from the way of the truth).
2 Timothy 2:14–19 NIV
Keep reminding God’s people of these things. Warn them before God against quarreling about words; it is of no value, and only ruins those who listen. Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth. Avoid godless chatter, because those who indulge in it will become more and more ungodly. Their teaching will spread like gangrene. Among them are Hymenaeus and Philetus, who have departed from the truth. They say that the resurrection has already taken place, and they destroy the faith of some. Nevertheless, God’s solid foundation stands firm, sealed with this inscription: “The Lord knows those who are his,” and, “Everyone who confesses the name of the Lord must turn away from wickedness.”
How can we bring healing to the faith of those who oppose our message?
2 Timothy 2:14
Questionable lives happen when we are:

Prepared for good works

(having a pure heart)

Be honest about where you are spiritually today
Know yourself.
2 Timothy 2:22–23 NIV
Flee the evil desires of youth and pursue righteousness, faith, love and peace, along with those who call on the Lord out of a pure heart. Don’t have anything to do with foolish and stupid arguments, because you know they produce quarrels.
2 Timothy 2:

Purposeful in community

(with other believers)

No body has ever stumbled into holiness and a godly living
Discipleship
Invite people to join a Discipleship Group
Discipleship without community is not discipleship
Discipleship without community is not discipleship
Discipleship without community is not discipleship
We train in community to live questionable lives
It’s always best to have someone speak words of truth to your life
2 Timothy 2:23–24 NIV
Don’t have anything to do with foolish and stupid arguments, because you know they produce quarrels. And the Lord’s servant must not be quarrelsome but must be kind to everyone, able to teach, not resentful.

Patient with the outsiders

The ability to teach is not linked to book knowledge but to a type of character that is at peace with others.

to bearing evil without resentment, patient, tolerant

Being a good teacher comes with the ability to guide someone’s life the right direction. Like someone put it: Would you wish the kind of walk with God you have on anyone?
We want to be part of groups that don’t meet to speak against people who disagree with our views. DG’s are designed to be personal about where we are in life in a safe environment.
When was the last time you said to someone, “I stand corrected?” with a humble attitude?
James 3:13 NIV
Who is wise and understanding among you? Let them show it by their good life, by deeds done in the humility that comes from wisdom.
People like to show they know. But in Scriptures, wisdom is not a cause for bragging but for a goodly life, greater humility. Wisdom and bragging are incompatible.
In the Bible, Wisdom comes from listening to a person who has more experience. It comes to happen when a person shows humility.
Pick your fights:

Truth in love set people free from the snare of offense

Pick your fights:

Reflect: Is my attitude/response salty or salted?
Reflect: Is my response salty or salted?
Is this a core issue?
Colossians 4:5–6 NIV
Be wise in the way you act toward outsiders; make the most of every opportunity. Let your conversation be always full of grace, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how to answer everyone.
Check your heart:
Redirect: Are we discussing a core issue?
. Jesus redirected the conversation of the Samaritan woman to speak about what true worship looked like not where to worship.
Rectify: Correcting with a good heart is a good thing.
2 Timothy 2:25 NIV
Opponents must be gently instructed, in the hope that God will grant them repentance leading them to a knowledge of the truth,
2 Timothy
Bring back people to speak about solid truth that will liberate them.
Bring back people to speak about solid truth that will liberate them.
Is this conversation building up or a distraction?
Redirect the conversation
