Introduction
The story is told that one day, Death was walking into a certain city when a man stopped him and asked what Death was planning to do in that city.
Death answered by say that he was going to receive 10,000 people that day.
The man responded in despair but Death reminded him that his job was to take people when their time was ready.
Today, that meant 10, 000 people would be taking their last breath and going into the hereafter.
Early the next day, the man was waiting for Death as he arrived at the city.
The man was furious with Death.
He lashed out at Death calling him a liar.
He said that just yesterday Death had told him that he would only take 10,000 lives and yet, according to all the reports of the day some 70,000 people had died.
60,000 more people had died than Death had said he would receive.
The man accused Death of lying and being greedy.
Death calmly allowed the man to rant and then stopped him.
Death quickly told the man, "Don't get mad at me, I only took 10,000.
Worry killed all the rest."
(Adapted from Haddon W. Robinson, What Jesus Said About Successful Living, page 221).
There’s no doubt today that worry and anxiety can kill you.
It is linked to all the big diseases, diabetes, high blood pressure, heart attack, stroke.
Yes sir, worry can kill a man as dead as anything else in this world.
But there’s something worse… Worry can also kill your testimony.
But there is a Cure for Anxiety too.
[Pray]
Father God, we come to you today praising your holy name, more majestic than any name.
Father, we confess to you that we worry about this life.
Please forgive us of our sins.
Father we ask that you take our worrying minds off of the material provisions for today that we may have a mind to focus on those who need you.
Father allow us to look at the people we encounter each day with your eyes.
Let us love them like you love them.
Father I ask that you open the hearts of this church to the work that you would want us to accomplish here in Los Fresnos and in the Valley;.
God, I ask that you prepare our hearts to hear your message this morning.
Father give me clarity of mind, precision of speech, and a heart for your people here this morning.
In the name of our Lord, Jesus Christ, I ask these things, Amen.
We are continuing in our series as we work through Jesus’ message, the Sermon on the Mount.
Last week we talked about some of the pitfalls of wealth and this week, we pick up on the biggest problem with money… Worry.

Seeing signs of financial anxiety?
How to cope by Jackie Zimmerman
Financial anxiety is a monetary monster that haunts many Americans, stoking worry for people across income level, race and gender.
“Financial anxiety can be debilitating, and it can cause significant distress in one's daily life,” says Kristy Archuleta, associate professor of personal finance planning at Kansas State University and co-founding editor of the Journal of Financial Therapy.
According to a 2016 study by financial services company Northwestern Mutual, 85% of Americans reported feeling some level of anxiety around money; a majority said there were negative impacts on their health, social lives and careers.

The American Psychological Association has begun to explore a diagnosis of Money Anxiety Disorder, which includes habits such as:
Overspending
Hoarding
Extreme Frugality - Depression-Era mentality
Financial family conflict
One family member takes over the financial purse strings to control the spending problems of another
One family member lies to another about spending habits
Anxiety about Money Troubles
And it is not surprising the Money Troubles breed further trouble in the form of sinful greed and addictions to shopping, gambling, alcohol, and drugs… among many other sins that we discussed briefly last week.
As we continue our way through Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount, we see that he turns his attention from the pitfalls of wealth to the trouble of anxiety.
And there’s clearly a connection between the two...

Jesus knew about our human craving for wealth and he knew about how it creates anxiety in our daily lives.
Apparently it has taken 2000-plus years for the American Psychology Association to catch up to Jesus...
I. Wealth Creates Anxiety - v 25
As we give this text a quick reading, it might look like Jesus switched topics again.
He was talking about wealth and now he’s talking about anxiety.
But as we look a little more closely we might see that Jesus is linking the idea of wealth with the idea of anxiety and worry...
To our modern eye, it looks like Jesus switched topics again.
He was talking about wealth and now he’s talking about anxiety.
But I know for certain that no such switch took place.
Jesus is continuing with the very same idea, just looking at it from a different perspective.
English Bible
Jesus begins verse 25 saying “for this reason...” — when you see this, ask yourself “For what reason?”
