Introduction:

Technology....is it a good or a bad thing?
Most of us would say it is a good thing, that it’s useful, beneficial, etc.......
However....let’s say a certain piece of technology…your phone for instance....let’s say it started having some problems
And these weren’t just any problems..but snapchat and instagram would not load!
The horror!!!!! What will we ever do
So that’s happening…what’s the first thing you are going to do?
REBOOT IT!
Side note: It always made me laugh when I worked at McKesson…when I’d have computer issues, I’d have to head to the 4th floor to visit the tech center
And do you know what they always did first? Turned it off and back on
These guys are getting paid a really good salary and there best go to move was to press the power button twice!
Ridiculous
But anyways....that’s what we try to do isn’t it? Just turn it off and hope that by turning it back on everything will work…and ironically it normally does
Except with an old Nintendo game system
The amount of hours I spent blowing into the game cartridges, carefully sliding the game into the system and pressing the power button hoping that mario would load is probably way higher than it should be
It was like a game inside of the game....defeat the system so you can play the system!
Well, in a way…not exactly the same, but in a way, God had a reboot too, ya know?
We know it as the flood, and we know Noah as one of the most famous people in the Bible.
Unlike our often futile attempts to reboot and fix technological issues, God’s wasn’t just a fingers crossed hope it turns out better this time kind of reboot…but His was calculated, and what we’re going to see tonight is, that it was a picture of God’s grace
We’re going to be picking up the story in , and between chapter 3, where we ended last week, and chapter 6, basically what has happened is:
Sin has wrecked the world. It has spread so deep and so wide so quickly
Like a disease....sin had consumed humanity

Read

These verses we just read are pretty amazing actually....
Sin had turned every single thought of man into just continual evil
Every thing was terrible
And the text actually told us God regretted that he had made man, and it grieved him to his heart.
Now, we could get sidetracked here into a really deep theological discussion about the idea that God had regret.....so I’ll just say this…it’s not regret like what we think of regret.
We think of regret as “if we had a choice we wouldn’t do it the same again”
Because God’s sovereign....so all He does is perfect and all knowing...
What this is referring to here is God was in a state of sorrow
As the second part of the verse said, He was grieved
For instance, in , Isaiah uses the word grieved in an example of a feeling a wife would have if her husband abandoned her.
See, God, was angry over sin, yes, that’s true, but He was also heartbroken…because He cares for us, and He cared for mankind who had outrightly told God He didn’t matter
Sin isn’t just breaking a rule, it’s breaking a relationship, and relationships are personal.
The Bible tells us God grieved before His judgement took place. What does this tell us about His character and how He views sin in our lives?
How would your attitude toward sin change if you saw it less as breaking God’s rules and more as breaking God’s heart?
But we read verse 7 and we can often think, and many people do, esp people who aren’t Christians, we think this, “Man…that’s a bit far isn’t it God? I mean, wipe out every man and animal? That doesn’t sound like a loving God to me!”
Remember how I said sin was like a disease that was consuming humanity?
Alright, so imagine with me, let’s say you all get married one day
Not everyone to each other in here....we’re not Mormon....
But you’re married, and you find out your spouse has cancer. And the cancer is pretty severe…like so severe they are going to be killed by it unless action is taken
What would you do?
You’d take radical measures wouldn’t you?
You’d try chemotherapy, radiation, trial drugs, whatever it would take to rid them of the cancer
Why? Answer: Because you love them, not because you’re unloving
Same thing here…God needed to rid the world of sin, and it was an act of love
And it was going to be painful, and severe, just like chemotherapy would be.....
But God was trying to fix the relationship, which we’ll see here in a moment with Noah
Now, we know that sin is still rampant today…so obviously something else happens in the story after God’s judgement.....but because sin is still happening today:
What type of things might grieve God today? Be specific.
In what ways does He still show patience to His people today?
