1 Tim 1:1
1 Timothy 1:12–17 KJV 1900
12 And I thank Christ Jesus our Lord, who hath enabled me, for that he counted me faithful, putting me into the ministry; 13 Who was before a blasphemer, and a persecutor, and injurious: but I obtained mercy, because I did it ignorantly in unbelief. 14 And the grace of our Lord was exceeding abundant with faith and love which is in Christ Jesus. 15 This is a faithful saying, and worthy of all acceptation, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners; of whom I am chief. 16 Howbeit for this cause I obtained mercy, that in me first Jesus Christ might shew forth all longsuffering, for a pattern to them which should hereafter believe on him to life everlasting. 17 Now unto the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only wise God, be honour and glory for ever and ever. Amen.

This is the Word of God
inerrant, infallible, inspired;
written by God, written for us,
that we might know what to believe
that we might know how to live
and that on its pages we might meet
The Living Christ.

A. THE GOSPEL IS BASED ON GOD’S MERCY AND ABUNDANT GRACE (1:13B-14).

A. THe Deeds of This Sinner v. 13

I. The Thanksgiving v.12

1 Timothy 1:12 KJV 1900
12 And I thank Christ Jesus our Lord, who hath enabled me, for that he counted me faithful, putting me into the ministry;
1
Paul gives a sudden outburst of thanksgiving. This is typical of Paul as He marveled at how wonderful the gospel was and is, as we should too.
Throughout all of Paul’s epistles he repeatedly gives thanks to Christ for putting him into ministry. Paul did not undertake ministry on His own, he was entrusted with the Gospel and appointed as an apostle.
Throughout all of Puls episles he repetedly gives thanks to Christ for putting him into ministery. Paul did not undertake ministery on His own, he was entrusted with the Gospel and appointed as an apposle.
The word faithful means trustworthy Paul makes this statement with humility, He is not desiring to boast, this implies that there was a period of testing in which Paul demonstrated that he was trustworthy all those in ministry are appointed by God and no one else.
The words appointed me to His service show how thankful Paul is in the fact that he had in no way appointed himself. He is stressing the divine initiative which provided him with the ground that HE HAD BEEN CALLED OF GOD.

There are four points to pauls thanksgiving here

The Letters to Timothy, Titus, and Philemon Saved to Serve (1 Timothy 1:12–17)

Paul never had the feeling that he had chosen Christ, but always that Christ had chosen him. It was as if, when he was heading straight for destruction, Jesus Christ had laid his hand upon his shoulder and stopped him in his tracks. It was as if, when he was busy throwing away his life, Jesus Christ had suddenly brought him to his senses.

He chose Him

He trusted Him
It was to Paul an amazing thing that he, the chief persecutor, had been chosen as the missionary of Christ. It was not only that Jesus Christ had forgiven him; it was that Christ trusted him.
It was to Paul an amazing thing that he, the chief persecutor, had been chosen as the missionary of Christ. It was not only that Jesus Christ had forgiven him; it was that Christ trusted him. Sometimes we forgive people who have made mistakes or been guilty of some sin, but we make it very clear that their past makes it impossible for us to trust them again with any responsibility. But Christ had not only forgiven Paul; he entrusted him with work to do. The man who had been Christ’s persecutor had been made his ambassador

he appointed Him
The Letters to Timothy, Titus, and Philemon Saved to Serve (1 Timothy 1:12–17)

We must be very careful to note to what purpose Paul felt he had been appointed. He was appointed to service. Paul never thought of himself as appointed to honour, or to leadership within the Church. He was saved to serve. Plutarch tells that, when a Spartan won a victory in the games, his reward was that he might stand beside his king in battle.

He was saved to serve. Plutarch tells that, when a Spartan won a victory in the games, his reward was that he might stand beside his king in battle.
There is an old story that illistrates this point
A Spartan wrestler at the Olympic Games was offered a very considerable bribe to abandon the struggle, but he refused. Finally, after a terrific effort, he won his victory. Someone said to him: ‘Well, Spartan, what have you got out of this costly victory you have won?’ He answered: ‘I have won the privilege of standing in front of my king in battle.’ His reward was to serve and, if need be, to die for his king. It was for service, not honour, that Paul knew that he had been chosen.

He empowered Him
Paul had long since discovered that Jesus Christ never gives anyone a task to do without also giving the power to do it. Paul would never have said: ‘See what I have done’, but always ‘See what Jesus Christ has enabled me to do.’ No one is good enough, or strong enough, or pure enough, or wise enough to be the servant of Christ. But, if we give ourselves to Christ, we will go forward not in our own strength but in the strength of our Lord.

II. The reflection of the past (V.13)

1 Timothy 1:13 KJV 1900
13 Who was before a blasphemer, and a persecutor, and injurious: but I obtained mercy, because I did it ignorantly in unbelief.

B. The Deception of This sinner V.13
The reflection of the past V.13
In all this Paul rembers His pre Christian State where he states that He was a
-blasphemer
-Persecutor
-injurous
A. I was
a. Blasphemer
A person who speaks disrespectfully about God in Order to damage his reputation
b. Persecutor
Before His conversion Paul sought to persecute followers of Christ. He arrested, beat, imprisoned and even killed them.
Acts 9:1–2 KJV 1900
1 And Saul, yet breathing out threatenings and slaughter against the disciples of the Lord, went unto the high priest, 2 And desired of him letters to Damascus to the synagogues, that if he found any of this way, whether they were men or women, he might bring them bound unto Jerusalem.
Acts
Acts 22:5 ESV
5 as the high priest and the whole council of elders can bear me witness. From them I received letters to the brothers, and I journeyed toward Damascus to take those also who were there and bring them in bonds to Jerusalem to be punished.
c. Injurious
Not only did paul approve the arrest of the folowers of Christ He led the charge of the Murder of Stephen
Acts 8:1 KJV 1900
1 And Saul was consenting unto his death. And at that time there was a great persecution against the church which was at Jerusalem; and they were all scattered abroad throughout the regions of Judaea and Samaria, except the apostles.
Those who watch over God’s people must not be violent
1 Timothy 3:2–3 KJV 1900
2 A bishop then must be blameless, the husband of one wife, vigilant, sober, of good behaviour, given to hospitality, apt to teach; 3 Not given to wine, no striker, not greedy of filthy lucre; but patient, not a brawler, not covetous;
1 Tim
Therefore, Paul marvels at being placed into ministry despite these things
B. What Paul Obtained
Paul goes on after reflecting on who he was and where he was to Marval at What God had done for Him.
1 Timothy 1:13 KJV 1900
13 Who was before a blasphemer, and a persecutor, and injurious: but I obtained mercy, because I did it ignorantly in unbelief.
a. Mercy
Paul marvels at This mercy and acknowledges it was not deserved but due to the sovereign character of God He was given such Mercy due to the fact He was acting innocently in unbelief
The Pastoral Epistles: An Introduction and Commentary c. The Apostle’s Personal Experience of the Gospel (1:12–17)

His misguided pre-Christian career had been the object of pity rather than judgment in the sight of God, who recognized in Saul of Tarsus a servant of mighty potential when once he was enlightened.

Would we do this today? if there was a wicked individual who accepted Christ and over time proved himself worthy would we send him out as a missionary or would we just hold on to who He was?

B. THE GOSPEL IS FOR SINNERS (1:15).

C. The Diagnosis of This sinner V. 15
The act of Christ V. 14-16

III. The act of Christ (V. 14-16)

1 Timothy 1:14–16 KJV 1900
14 And the grace of our Lord was exceeding abundant with faith and love which is in Christ Jesus. 15 This is a faithful saying, and worthy of all acceptation, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners; of whom I am chief. 16 Howbeit for this cause I obtained mercy, that in me first Jesus Christ might shew forth all longsuffering, for a pattern to them which should hereafter believe on him to life everlasting.
1 tim
A. His Grace
Paul stresses two of the three christian virtues here in faith and love
1 Corinthians 13:13 KJV 1900
13 And now abideth faith, hope, charity, these three; but the greatest of these is charity.
b. abundent with faith
Grace is an abundant attribute we see throughout Paul’s letters, and he could never write for very long without bringing into his witings the grace of the Lord.
c. abundent with Love
B. What He came to do (V.15)
1 Timothy 1:15 KJV 1900
15 This is a faithful saying, and worthy of all acceptation, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners; of whom I am chief.
Paul’s statement This is a faithful saying, and worthy of all acceptation,” is meant to bring extra attention to what He is about to say, Paul uses this statement or one like it five different times in the pastoral epistles.
He then states what Christ came to do, He came to save sinners
John 3:17 KJV 1900
17 For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.
a.) I am Cheif
Paul then continues to mention that He is the chief of sinners.

“OF WHOOM I AM CHEIF”

C. Pauls’ Marvel
1 Timothy 1:16 KJV 1900
16 Howbeit for this cause I obtained mercy, that in me first Jesus Christ might shew forth all longsuffering, for a pattern to them which should hereafter believe on him to life everlasting.
After Paul stresses that He is the chief sinner he reminisces on What God did for Him
a. He was shown mercy
Paul recognized that he deserved punishment for his violent actions ageist the followers of Christ
1 Timothy 1:12 KJV 1900
12 And I thank Christ Jesus our Lord, who hath enabled me, for that he counted me faithful, putting me into the ministry;
1
However because of the Mercy God Showed to Him, he was motivated to serve faithfully
2 Corinthians 4:1 KJV 1900
1 Therefore seeing we have this ministry, as we have received mercy, we faint not;
