MASTERMIND—3
REFRAMING
Most of life’s battles are won or lost in the mind.
Life you have is a reflection of the thoughts you think.
Comes into your mind—Comes out in your life.
Cannot have a positive life—Negative mind.
BUT
Control what you think—Control what you do.

2 Corinthians 10:3–5 ESV
For though we walk in the flesh, we are not waging war according to the flesh. For the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh but have divine power to destroy strongholds. We destroy arguments and every lofty opinion raised against the knowledge of God, and take every thought captive to obey Christ,
demolish strongholds
create new thoughts
Your life will always move in the direction of your strongest thoughts.

Neural Pathways—More you think a thought—Easier it is to think.
Mental Filters
personal filters—Mistake in reasoning based on personal preferences or beliefs. (Mental filter that impacts how you think.)
Glasses—You look discolored.
Default filters—Default frames.
Why—People respond differently to same situation.

REFRAMING
Reframing—Creating a different way of looking at a situation, person or relationship by changing its meaning. (Diff Filter)
Perceptual accentuation—Cognitive restructuring—Thinking different.
Reframing illustration
You can’t control what happens to you. But you can control how you frame it.

Paul knew how to reframe his situations
Dreamed of going to Rome: To PreachPrisoner.
Worked hard, degree—Job overqualified different field.
Honored God dating—Married sweetheart—Divorced.
This point in life—Expected something different, better.
Paul could have said.
NWV (Whiners) Now I want you to know, brothers and sisters, that what has happened to me really stinks. As a result of the hell on earth that I’ve experienced, I’m quitting BCG and never going back to church.

Philippians 1:12–13 ESV
I want you to know, brothers, that what has happened to me has really served to advance the gospel, so that it has become known throughout the whole imperial guard and to all the rest that my imprisonment is for Christ.
What most people would think is bad—I’m framing as good!
Chained to influential Roman guards—New one every 8 hours.
They thought I was prisoner—Giving 8 hour sermons—Real prisoner.
Philippians 1:14 ESV
And most of the brothers, having become confident in the Lord by my imprisonment, are much more bold to speak the word without fear.
God used my chains to embolden the family of Christ!

REFRAMING YOUR STORY AND RELATIONSHIPS
Thank God for what didn’t happen. (Bad)
Girl told parents—Met guy at bar—Hooked up—Preg with twins.
Probation over in a year—Start looking for job once out rehab.
Considering marrying me—Moving in (can’t afford).
Actually—Got a “D” on my chemistry exam—Could be a lot worse.
Missed deadline (no bonus)—Didn’t lose job.
Car wreck (fender)—Expensive—At least no one was hurt.
Flight delayed problems with plane—Down here rather up there.
Whole scheme of things—Not that big of a deal!
Not saying to minimize when something is a big deal—Don’t let…

Our Thoughts or Frames—Shape what we experience.
This is going to be so hard—Fun—Love a challenge!
Can’t stand going to these events—Going with my family—Good.
Believe—Determines how we will BEHAVE.

Believe—Never go out w/me—Laugh face—Take up cross—Don’t ask.
Believe—Why not? May actually say ‘yes.’ We have 3 kids—

Look for God’s goodness.
Find what you are looking for!

Want to see Good, Positive, Opportunities

Cognitive Reframing—Therapist—Empower you to decide meaning.
Let Jesus help you decide.
For me to live is Christ—Die is gain—Either way—I win!
Wouldn’t choose this—Thankful for what God did in it.

If he works in all things for good
Reject unhealthy Default Frames. (Loser, Failure, Not smart)
Reframing—Not passively receiving circumstance—Actively interpreting.
Not interpreting God through circumstances!
Interpreting my circumstances through goodness of God!

What has happened to me—Actually served to advance the gospel.
