We could easily spend months or more in .
And maybe at some point we should…but as we follow along with our reading plan I find it fitting to end our time in the book of John with these verses.
Father, I will that they also, whom thou hast given me, be with me where I am; that they may behold my glory, which thou hast given me: for thou lovedst me before the foundation of the world.
()
john 17 20-We could easily spend months or more in .
And maybe at some point we should…but as we follow along with out reading plan I find it fitting to end our time in the book of John with these verses.
I strongly encourage you to spend time studying and meditating on Jesus’ prayer here in …go back to it often…a lot can be seen and learned from listening to the Lord pray...
He starts very personally…speaking of Himself and His relationship with the Father...
Then moves to praying for the disciples who are with Him in verse 6.
Then in verse 20 He transitions to what is almost unfathomable…this should make us pause and pay very close attention....Jesus very directly prays for us…
and I find it very powerful where he starts that prayer…I preached on this April 22 but I want to remind us.
I find it very powerful where Jesus starts when He prays of us...I preached on this April 22 but I want to remind us.
He prays first and foremost...for our unity…unity in the body…and the power and importance of unity in the body.
That we should be so close…so unified…so all in for one another…and quick to forgive one another…and care for one another and lift up one another...that we are as unified…not just as much as good friends…or people with similar interests…or united when we like one another…or united when things are going the way we want them to…or even as united as family…no…much more....
We are to be united as the eternal Son of God is with God the Father…and I ask you how united is that?
Well Jesus goes so far as to pray for us that we would be perfectly one…
And Church I desire that and pray for that for us.
And you should too because Jesus does…so much that He starts His prayer for us by praying for it for us…twice.
And...
and then...
He tells us why this is so important…feel the weight of this…when we are unified…and only when we are unified…will the world believe the gospel we preach.
If you want others to believe and be saved…they need to hear and believe the gospel...
And we need to also pray for…and strive for…and be part of...unity in the body...
When people look at your life they should ask 2 questions…why are you so in love with and devoted to Jesus?
And Why are you so in love with and devoted to those people in the church?
The world will not believe what they need to believe to be saved…that Jesus is the Messiah…or that He loves us....if we are not unified in our love for one another.
The world will not believe if we are not unified…that can not be overemphasized.
That truth can not be overemphasized.
This morning I want to dig deeper…specifically into how this relates to God’s glory…and how living for Glory will bring you (us) victory and joy.
In Glory We find Victory and Joy...
Jesus said it like this...
Follow with me for a minute.
NO SLIDE
Let’s see this in Jesus’ prayer...Follow with me for a minute.
This prayer of Jesus in is right before Judas comes to betray him and have Him arrested…in that context look what He says about glory in verse 5.
He is about to glorify the Father by overcoming sin and death…by going to the cross for us.
NO SLIDE
and the inverse...
NO SLIDE
Again unity in the body.
You can not say I love God but not the church…and the greatest love is to give your life for others.
NO SLIDE
And all this why?
for God’s glory…
BACK TO
What was that glory that the Father and Son have had for all eternity...together from even before the earth existed?
What did this glory look like…what is this glory?
What was that glory that the father and son have had together from even before the world existed?
Perfect unity…perfect love…displayed in perfect…infinite…power and glory.
The Glory that was then used to create the earth…the glory that raised Jesus from the dead…the same glory will one day replace the sun…that Glory!
Do you want to experience that glory?
Well later in the same prayer Jesus prays this for you and me…
And then when He is praying for us He says this...
FIRST HALF
Whoa!
The glory of Christ…given to us! WHY?
For what reason?
So that...
So that…it might say something about us that we need God’s glory in order to be unified...
But it also says something about the lack of unity in the American church…and what is the true church...because the church should have unity…Jesus prayed for it and how important it is to God that He has given us His glory for this reason...
And remember why...
And this morning I want to take this a step further…and show how when we live as the body in unity.
and trust that His glory is promised to us...
And then this...
We can live eternally minded…seek first the kingdom...
And in that we will experience this glory…and victory…and joy…why?
The next verse...
After praying for us specifically and that we would experince the glory He has given us by being unified as the body and loving one another so others would beilve that He is the Messiah...
His last plea for us in this prayer…His prayer for us...
The whole purpose of salvation is communicated in this verse.
The foretaste of this is now, but the fullness of it lies beyond this present age.
See represents the Greek word theōreō, “to observe with sustained attention,” and includes the idea of entering into and experiencing something.
You loved me before the foundation of the world implies that love and interpersonal interaction among the members of the Trinity did not begin at any point in time but has existed eternally (cf.
v. 5).
The whole point of the universe and especially of our salvation here in this verse...
You could even say…the whole point of the universe (remember HE is about to go to the cross)...
The point of your life and salvation…prayed for by Jesus for us the church and for you if you are saved…right here in this verse...
We come here, in verse 24, to a consideration of the last great petition of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ for his followers and disciples.
It is actually the last of the petitions that he offered and is in many ways the end of the prayer.
In the final two verses he again just reminds his Father of the character of these people for whom he is praying: “O righteous Father, the world hath not known thee: but I have known thee, and these have known that thou hast sent me.
And I have declared unto them thy name, and will declare it: that the love wherewith thou hast loved me may be in them, and I in them” (vv.
25, 26).
It is, then, the last of the great petitions, and at the same time in a remarkable and extraordinary way it sums up in itself the entire prayer, so that as we look at it we shall not only be considering the special new request, we shall also be reminding ourselves of certain things that we have been considering regularly as we have worked our way through this glorious and tremendous chapter.
That we would see His glory…this is huge.
Do you remember what happens to sinners who enter into the presence of God’s glory...
And what God said to Moses...when Moses asked to see His glory...
Show us your glory…God reply...
ex 33 19
God shows His glory in His name…and by saving whom He will save and showing mercy on whom He will show mercy...
And no one can experience His glory face to face and live...
Unless…we could be made righteous and pure and be reconciled to God...
And if you are saved and sit here this morning as one whom He has shown mercy…you have been justified…and...
Therefore we now live for His glory and have been given His glory…and will see His glory.
What if we lived with that truth on our hearts and minds?
That we are to love for the glory of God by knowing and engoying Him now and forever.
That we are to live for the glory of God by knowing and trusting and enjoying Him now and forever.
Individually as those whom He has shown mercy and as the body of Christ to whom He has given His glory.
That we who have been given a foretaste of His glory…have been promised that we will someday be in the full presence of His glory forevermore...
And not because of us or what we have done but because of Him and who He is…that we have been chosen and given to Jesus by the Father…and that is based on the rock solid love of the Father and Son…which existed before the foundation of the world…so we WILL see His glory.
That is exactly what Jesus prays for us before going to the cross...
And I want us to see what it should mean and would mean and what it will mean...for us if we could grasp this glorious truth about ourselves…and about the church.
And I want us to see this moring what it should mean and would mean for us if we could grasp this gloruous truth about ourselves…that we will be with Him where He is…to see and experience the fullness og His glory…because of the love of the Father and the Son before the foundation of the world...
