Is it Enough?
Karma - I’ll have multiple chances to get it right.
If not in this life, then in the next.
Penance - I pray and suffer in hopes that it will be enough.
Guessing - I don’t know.
Hopefully I got it right in this life.
Sacrifice/Suffering - I suffered enough in this life to warrant God’s favor.
Payment - I give to the church.
Good Deeds - I put others before myself.
-or- I hope my good outweighs my bad.
Hopeless - I couldn’t come to church.
The roof would fall in.
It’s not enough!
God wants a relationship with YOU!
Stories - Beginning, Middle, & End
Beginning: Genesis - CREATION - Tree of Life - Sin - Relationship with God = Broken - We are no longer AT ONE with God.
Middle: The Entire BIBLE!
God’s pursuit of His Creation.
End: The Book of Revelation: Tree of Life present.
John’s description of heaven in Rev 21&22.
God wants a relationship with YOU!
And He provided that way through Jesus Christ.
What’s my part?
Do I have to work for it?
Can I earn it?
Must I buy it?
According to this, it looks like we must WORK for our salvation!
After all, that is what most religions require…appeasement or gaining favor from one’s (g)od.
But what about today’s scripture?
Is this a contradiction we found in the BIBLE?
Paul say salvation comes by FAITH.
In Mark, Jesus seems to say by WORKS in keeping the Law perfectly.
Actually, keeping the Law is not within the rich young ruler’s power.
And that what Jesus was getting to.
He was trying to get the rich young ruler to admit that he couldn’t…that eternal life was not within his own power.
All of scripture points to this truth:
A person comes into a right relationship with God, by His Grace, through faith in Jesus Christ.
Internal Decision + External Expression
In Acts 2 we see the birth of the Church.
Peter gives his first sermon to a crowd of people wondering what they had just witnessed.
They witnessed Pentecost.
The indwelling of the Holy Spirit in the 12 Disciples.
Peter gives them a rundown of who Jesus is and what He had done.
Here’s how that sermon ended:
Scripture says: 3,000 recieved salvation that day!
We see a pattern established in the very first church:
We express our Faith in Christ by an internal decision from the heart, and then an external expression.
Internal decision = Repent: to turn around, turn away from.
No longer moving away from God.
External Expression = Baptism is going public with your inner decision to believe.
This pattern flows into day to day life.
One’s inner decision will inevitably be fleshed out in their lives.
One’s changed life is evidence, as Peter spoke, that the Holy Spirit has been deposited in you.
Your changed life & good works do not save you, but reinforce the reality that the one who does is in you.
Is it Enough?
I believe person comes into a right relationship with God, by His Grace, through faith in Jesus Christ.
