Dreams make the Difference
Intro
What’s the craziest dream you can remember having?
—> Clint Eastwood in my closet in “The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly” clothes
I’m pretty sure though I’ve never had a dream that made my entire family hate me.
Let’s look at these characters
Jacob/Israel —> the father, the trickster, the deceiver, the ladder guy, the one who wrestled with a heavenly being and was blessed.
Joseph —> the 2nd youngest (Benjamin doesn’t figure in yet), the favorite, the dreamer, His name means “to add” —>
The Brothers —> the ones Jacob loved less, the shepherds, the ordinary, the dream killers, 12 tribes of Israel.
--------------------------
At first it is clearly jacob and joseph together.
Joseph is favored.
Joseph’s character is displayed.
He shows wisdom and respect for his father by giving a report that although is bad on his brothers and hurts their relationship.
It is what is right.
Jacob gives Joseph this coat.
Jacob or Israel, should know better than anyone the pitfalls of showing favoritism towards their children.
This act drives a deeper wedge between Joseph and his brothers
Gen 37:
Joseph’s first dream .
They never ask for clarification or seek another answer.
They take it at face value because of the previous events that have happened.
Gen 37:
Joseph’s 2nd dream goes beyond the brothers into the entire family.
At this point Joseph becomes separated from even his father.
His brothers have moved to the point of anger.
Joseph is no longer an annoyance but a problem.
The two attitudes in this verse are those that always divide people in their reactions to news from God.
The brothers’ scepticism was emotional and hasty; the father’s open mind was the product of some humility.
Israel had learnt by now, as his sons had not, to allow for God’s hand in affairs, and for his right of choice among men.
People give us good gifts.
God gives us the best gifts.
God gave Joseph the gift of purpose before he even realized it.
Others will get in the way of the purpose both intentionally and unintentionally, but we have to stay out of our own way.
sometimes God doesn’t reveal its his purpose until we need him the most.
