The Joy of the Overcomer

John 16:16–18 ESV
“A little while, and you will see me no longer; and again a little while, and you will see me.” So some of his disciples said to one another, “What is this that he says to us, ‘A little while, and you will not see me, and again a little while, and you will see me’; and, ‘because I am going to the Father’?” So they were saying, “What does he mean by ‘a little while’? We do not know what he is talking about.”
John 16:16-
A game of picaboo, hide and seek?
What are you talking about?
Sometimes we just are like what is going on.
John 16:19–21 ESV
Jesus knew that they wanted to ask him, so he said to them, “Is this what you are asking yourselves, what I meant by saying, ‘A little while and you will not see me, and again a little while and you will see me’? Truly, truly, I say to you, you will weep and lament, but the world will rejoice. You will be sorrowful, but your sorrow will turn into joy. When a woman is giving birth, she has sorrow because her hour has come, but when she has delivered the baby, she no longer remembers the anguish, for joy that a human being has been born into the world.
The disciples seem scared to ask more questions.
Jesus is concerned about our confusion, our sadness.
John 16:19-21
Today we are talking about Joy but today I want to tell you that it is ok to be sad. Greeters. Happy faces.
Jesus cares.
Jesus doesn't say dont feel that way, but that you wont always feel that way.
Jesus also knows the long terms plan he knows what is to come
He knows that all hardships that we go through as believers have a good outcome coming. He knows our sorrow will be turned to joy.
Just like labor. But something happens after… complete joy
Risky move Jesus.. you are not suppose to compare anything to labor.
Same baby creates pain and joy. It is turned into. Transformed.
John 16:22
John 16:22 ESV
So also you have sorrow now, but I will see you again, and your hearts will rejoice, and no one will take your joy from you.
John 16:22–24 ESV
So also you have sorrow now, but I will see you again, and your hearts will rejoice, and no one will take your joy from you. In that day you will ask nothing of me. Truly, truly, I say to you, whatever you ask of the Father in my name, he will give it to you. Until now you have asked nothing in my name. Ask, and you will receive, that your joy may be full.
this new joy can not be robbed.
John 16:22-
Word changes for will see :see and understand
John 16:23–24 ESV
In that day you will ask nothing of me. Truly, truly, I say to you, whatever you ask of the Father in my name, he will give it to you. Until now you have asked nothing in my name. Ask, and you will receive, that your joy may be full.
John 16:25–28 ESV
“I have said these things to you in figures of speech. The hour is coming when I will no longer speak to you in figures of speech but will tell you plainly about the Father. In that day you will ask in my name, and I do not say to you that I will ask the Father on your behalf; for the Father himself loves you, because you have loved me and have believed that I came from God. I came from the Father and have come into the world, and now I am leaving the world and going to the Father.”
ask in prayer rather then personally

Pray - receive - full joy
Conditions - in my name - Not a abracadabra - but in submission and for the purpose of his glory.
What does your prayer life look like
What does your joy look like?
Are there things that hinder our prayer ?
Three common reasons your prayers are not answered.
1. Unconfessed sin
Psalm 66:18 ESV
If I had cherished iniquity in my heart, the Lord would not have listened.
Psalm
2. Selfishness
John
James 4:3 NLT
And even when you ask, you don’t get it because your motives are all wrong—you want only what will give you pleasure.
3. Unresolved Conflict
1 Peter 3:7 ESV
Likewise, husbands, live with your wives in an understanding way, showing honor to the woman as the weaker vessel, since they are heirs with you of the grace of life, so that your prayers may not be hindered.
John 16:29–30 ESV
His disciples said, “Ah, now you are speaking plainly and not using figurative speech! Now we know that you know all things and do not need anyone to question you; this is why we believe that you came from God.”
Praying in line with the will of Jesus is where you will find full joy
Hebrews 13:20–21 ESV
Now may the God of peace who brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus, the great shepherd of the sheep, by the blood of the eternal covenant, equip you with everything good that you may do his will, working in us that which is pleasing in his sight, through Jesus Christ, to whom be glory forever and ever. Amen.
John 16:29-
John 16:31–33 ESV
Jesus answered them, “Do you now believe? Behold, the hour is coming, indeed it has come, when you will be scattered, each to his own home, and will leave me alone. Yet I am not alone, for the Father is with me. I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.”
John:31-33
