Introduction
In the forward by Howard G. Hendricks, Professor of Christian Education at Dallas Theological Seminary, says in his forward in Walter A. Henrichsen’s book, Disciples are Made – Not Born: “Make disciples” is the mandate of the Master…We may ignore it, but we cannot evade it.
Jesus Christ left this legacy – the magna charta of the church.
He provided both the model and the method.
His life – and death – recast the lives of men.
He demonstrated that you have not done anything until you have changed the lives of men.”
“Follow me,” he urged His men.
And then that staggering assurance: “Lo, I am with you always…” Somehow we have forgotten that this promise is not a carte blanche; His promise is linked with a process.
We cannot embrace the promise without the process.”
Purpose: (CIT-Central Idea of the Text)The purpose of this sermon is show how important discipleship and the winning of souls are to the master.
I hope to encourage all of us to become serious about our walk with God, our commitment to Him and the church, our desire to know Jesus better and love Him more!
the focus is on Jesus’ knowledge, the human condition, and the opportunity to share in God’s task.
In this pericope, the focus is on Jesus’ knowledge, the human condition, and the opportunity to share in God’s task.
The scene of the sermon is by the Sea of Gennesaret (Tiberias or Galilee) (1).
People were crowding around Jesus trying to hear the Word of God.
There are some lowly fisherman around washing & cleaning their nets.
Jesus borrowed Simon & Andrew’s boat & directed him to push it away from the shore.
(This was a set up). Jesus is also teaching Simon how to bounce back from failure to success!
So, at this point Jesus is teaching the people.
I’m sure he has the attention of Simon for several reasons.
And, upon the conclusion of his didactical delivery, he turns his attention to Simon Peter and says, “Launch out into the deep, and let down your nets for a draught.”
We must not forget that Jesus is still God and he knows all.
He is aware of the state and condition of Simon Peter (i.e. he has no fish).
So in order to get where he wants to in verse 11, he goes through the process of verses 4-7.
In order for Peter and the boys to catch men, they will need to utilize the process he has taken them through with real fish for that of human souls.
(The Main Objective of the Sermon (MOS): When we leave here today I hope that each of us will respond to this message by availing ourselves to Bible Study and Sunday to get the tools we need in order to be effective fishermen for souls.
I.(4) Launch Into the Deep
▪Pull out into deep waters.
▪The opposite of deep is shallow.
Too many of us want to remain in shallow waters.
•Comfort zones – it is easy to get the fish around the bank and the shore.
•Don’t let not getting a catch hinder and stop you from fishing.
Don’t let not catching fish get you down (ref.
5).
II.(4)
Let Down Your Nets
·The fish were not going to jump in the boat, they had to go get them.
·”Put out into deep water, AND let down the nets for a catch.”
*This is not an “either/or” command, but a “both/and” command.
·It takes obedient faith to do what Jesus says even if we don’t understand it.
Jesus never asked us to understand it.
·Even though they were cleaning their nets, go back out with them.
Jesus can do more with incompleteness, than we can with completeness.
·Jesus can be trusted.
In fact, he knows people better than they know themselves.
This is pictured in Jesus’ knowing how to fish better than the fishermen do.
What they could not do the night before, even though fishing was their profession, Jesus enables them to do with amazing results.

III.(4) Land a Draught (Catch)
·Several methods of fishing have been used for centuries on the Sea of Galilee.
Some fishermen caught with their bare hands, some used wicker baskets or other kinds of fish traps made of nets or rope, some used spears, arrows or harpoons.
But by far the most popular kind of fishing was by net.
·There were three methods of net fishing.
·The dragnet is the oldest type of net.
·The cast net
▪The third method is the trammel net which was actually composed of three nets, two large mesh walls about five feet high with a finer net in between.
The boat went out into deep waters where there are no rocks so that the nets would not be torn.
▪It was usually done by night.
Here they go in the day.
Jesus changes up the way they had been doing things.
Jesus flips the script!
Change is o.k.
Conclusion: The net gathered in every kind of fish, as they were unable to escape through the three layers of netting.
When the fish were brought to shore, they had to be extricated from the nets and this took time and skill.
·(10) ... despite the presence of sinfulness in the fishermen, Jesus still asks sinful people like Peter to join him in fishing for people.

To be a “fisher of people” is to be a “fish” who is able to relate what it means to be pulled out of dangerous waters by God’s grace.
