Introduction
How often do you feel discouraged?
I’m certain that if encouragement is not a part of your life it can lead to feeling unimportant and undervalued.
I believe in 1 John, the author understood the power of encouragement.
Beginning this chapter with “My little children, I am writing these things to you so that you may not sin.
And if anyone sins, we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous”.
It is one thing to tell someone to avoid something but to give them the why and the encouragement of refraining is paramount to them being resilient.
How often do we encourage our children?
How often do we encourage them by cultivating their gifts?
It is quite certain that this chapter is not referring to strictly adolescence, but the viewpoint that John as well as God refers to us as his little children.
Many of us in this room would not be where we are had it not been for encouragement.
It took encouragement from someone to see something in you that you did not see in yourself to be the driving force when things got tough!
There are a few promises made in this chapter that are words of encouragement, our ability to have an advocate with God, the fact that regardless of this world’s schemes and tactics it is not our home, and that through salvation we have eternal life, and that your gifts and your anointing are not dependent on anyone else but God and the power that abides in you.
These are things that have to be taught to our children consistently.
We have to encourage them and affirm them of who God is and the beauty of living for him in today’s society!
The Encouraging Promise
Promises are encouraging especially when they are coming from a reliable source like a I will never leave you nor forsake you source.
This is the promise which He Him made to us: eternal life.
God’s promise is two fold it gives us something to look forward to meanwhile it is something designated to those who belong to God.
Regardless of how great you believe you might be or how smart you perceive yourself to be you amount of self understanding or knowledge itself is nothing without your belonging to Christ.
Be conscious or understand the fact that this letter serves two purposes that our current belief has a need to be strengthened meanwhile understanding that strength, this is a gift that has already been given.
In other words, this promise serves as a device to reaffirm faith meanwhile giving us something to look forward to.
The next generation needs something to look forward to that is spiritually healthy that they can pass along to the generation that is coming behind them and eternal life does that.
He who has the Son has the life; he who does not have the Son of God does not have the life.
John tells us that these things in verse 26 were written concerning those who are trying to deceive you.
The Encouraging Anointing
At this time of the letter, John knew he was combatting Gnostics who believed that knowledge was a factor of anointing.
2 John Verses 7-9 For many deceivers have gone out into the world, those who do not acknowledge Jesus Christ as coming in the flesh.
This is the deceiver and the antichrist.
Watch yourselves, that you do not lose what we have accomplished, but that you may receive a full reward.
Anyone who goes too far and does not abide in the teaching of Christ, does not have God; the one who abides in the teaching, he has both the Father and the Son.
Watch yourselves, that you do not lose what we have accomplished, but that you may receive a full reward.
9 Anyone who goes too far and does not abide in the teaching of Christ, does not have God; the one who abides in the teaching, he has both the Father and the Son.
New American
Sometimes our children as well as adults can become discouraged when our knowledge or talent does not measure up to others.
But if we know that our anointing comes from God, getting caught up in who is better than me, who’s the better preacher, singer or teacher can be a determent to our growth and development spiritually.
Just because you can quote a bunch of scriptures or you are the Luther Vandross of praise and worship does not mean that you are anointed.
Does your talent match you willingness to live for God?
Our children must be encouraged, we must be encouraged as adults.
The bible says exhort one another daily.
Understand that your anointing is given by God and sustained by God abiding in you.
There is not a school, sermon, Sunday school lesson, seminary, daily devotion, gospel meeting, songfest, homecoming, webinar, men’s or women’s day, youtube video that can take the place of God.
Now He who establishes us with you in Christ and anointed us is God,
Now these things can reinvigorate, enhance, strengthen and encourage what God has given but if your life is raggedy you cannot expect your anointing to be in mint condition.
Now these things can reinvigorate, enhance, strengthen and encourage what God has given but if your life is raggedy you cannot expect your anointing to be in mint condition.
Now these things can reinvigorate, enhance, strengthen and encourage what God has given but if your life is raggedy you cannot expect your anointing to be in mint condition.
Your anointing is only as strong as your devotion to God.
Essentially all of us that abide in Christ have the Holy Spirit.
The power of the Holy Spirit cannot merely be taught to you, it is too powerful to be restricted to the teachings of man.
This is why God continues to do things we fail to understand.
Think of all the lessons you have learned in life about yourself just by witnessing God move.
Doctors who spend years in school tell you something detrimental to you health but then God steps in.
You get fired from a job, in the midst of financial woes, just for the Holy Spirit to lead to you to a better job.
Friends you have had for life start betraying you and talking about you and God moves you to a circle of better friends, Anointed.
Your spouse said they were done, you are crying and praying, praying and crying and then God steps in!
Anointed!
An innocent man watching football in his own home, murdered by the people that are supposed to protect and serve us.
This is why our kids need encouragement.
I know another innocent man, scorned, beaten, tried with the transgressors.
I bet those who killed him wondered where is his anointing now?
When they hung him on the cross, where is his anointing now?
When they buried him in someone else’s tomb, where’s his anointing now.
But sometimes you have to be buried so God can really showcase His anointing in your life.
I do not need someone to educate me on how good God is, because I can see him working in my life, you don’t know what he’s done for me, I have the victory, I am anointed!
