Lesson 3 – Who is Jesus?

I have heard people say that Jesus Christ is…

1. The Doctrine of Christ’s Deity

a. Definition: Jesus Christ is God; and existed from eternity in full equality with the Father and the Spirit.

b. Central passage:

John 1:1–3 ESV
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made.

a. Why is it important to know and acknowledge who Jesus Christ is?

·

John 8:23–24 ESV
He said to them, “You are from below; I am from above. You are of this world; I am not of this world. I told you that you would die in your sins, for unless you believe that I am he you will die in your sins.”
Text

We will die in our sins if we don’t.

Jesus’ Claim

·

1 John 2:22–27 ESV
Who is the liar but he who denies that Jesus is the Christ? This is the antichrist, he who denies the Father and the Son. No one who denies the Son has the Father. Whoever confesses the Son has the Father also. Let what you heard from the beginning abide in you. If what you heard from the beginning abides in you, then you too will abide in the Son and in the Father. And this is the promise that he made to us—eternal life. I write these things to you about those who are trying to deceive you. But the anointing that you received from him abides in you, and you have no need that anyone should teach you. But as his anointing teaches you about everything, and is true, and is no lie—just as it has taught you, abide in him.
Crowd’s Reaction

It is evidence that will belong to the Father.

·

Romans 10:9–10 ESV
because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes and is justified, and with the mouth one confesses and is saved.
Crowd’s Reason

We must confess Him as the risen Lord to be saved.

2. The Doctrine of Christ’s Humanity

a. Definition: Jesus Christ is not only fully God, but also fully a man who experienced all the weaknesses of humanity, with one exception – He was without sin.

b. Central passage:

John 1:14 ESV
And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.

c. Why did Jesus become fully human?

·

Hebrews 2:14–18 ESV
Since therefore the children share in flesh and blood, he himself likewise partook of the same things, that through death he might destroy the one who has the power of death, that is, the devil, and deliver all those who through fear of death were subject to lifelong slavery. For surely it is not angels that he helps, but he helps the offspring of Abraham. Therefore he had to be made like his brothers in every respect, so that he might become a merciful and faithful high priest in the service of God, to make propitiation for the sins of the people. For because he himself has suffered when tempted, he is able to help those who are being tempted.

To share in our humanity, to destroy the devil, and to set us free.

·

Hebrews 4:14–15 ESV
Since then we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession. For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin.

To sympathize with our weaknesses.

·

Matthew 11:29 ESV
Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.

To be an example

d. describes the actual process of the Incarnation (God becoming man). As best as you can, list the steps that Jesus took on your behalf.

Philippians 2:6–8 ESV
who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.
