Introduction
Review/Preview
Exposition
Matthew 23:1 ESV
Then Jesus said to the crowds and to his disciples,
Matthew 23:2 ESV
“The scribes and the Pharisees sit on Moses’ seat,
aorist tense -usually past tense - emphasis is not on the timing but that it is something that began at some time.
Could be translated that the scribes and Pharisees “sat” on Moses’ seat
NASB “have seated themselves”
the thrust of the idea is that they “have presumed to sit” in Moses’ seat
Matthew 23:3 ESV
so do and observe whatever they tell you, but not the works they do. For they preach, but do not practice.
Matthew 23:4 ESV
They tie up heavy burdens, hard to bear, and lay them on people’s shoulders, but they themselves are not willing to move them with their finger.

I. Baseless rules breed hypocrisy so be sure to follow Jesus rather than man

Applications:
Always be sure before you place a burden on others.
Politics
Alcohol
Entertainment choices
For those burdens that you do place on others, always be ready to help
What is the church?
a body
we are to be each other’s first place we turn for help outside of our immediate family
Be careful not to abuse authority
Exposition 2
Matthew 23:5 ESV
They do all their deeds to be seen by others. For they make their phylacteries broad and their fringes long,
Matthew 23:6 ESV
and they love the place of honor at feasts and the best seats in the synagogues
Matthew 23:7 ESV
and greetings in the marketplaces and being called rabbi by others.
a

II. Hypocrisy is characterized by living for the attention and praise of others.

Matthew 23:8 ESV
But you are not to be called rabbi, for you have one teacher, and you are all brothers.
“You” is emphatic, directing the following words to His disciples rather than the general public
This certainly does not mean that they are secret words but rather that even through this type of teaching, God may use it to call sinners to repentance, allowing unbelievers a glimpse of the standard of righteousness laid before Jesus’ followers.
The title Rabbi was used towards “masters” whom disciples would follow. These master/teachers were to be obeyed without question. Jesus is telling us here that He alone is our Master. He is our Lord whom we follow and obey without question.
This type of authority is to be given to no man, whether a Pastor, or church official, or anyone other than Jesus. This doesn’t mean that we don’t follow the leadings and teachings of others such as pastors, but it means that we don’t follow them without questioning. Without testing.
Matthew 23:9 ESV
And call no man your father on earth, for you have one Father, who is in heaven.
Don’t call your dad “father.” Is that what this is saying?
“Fathers” were the ones who spoke the oral tradition and committed it to writting
These traditions were in the same place as the “Word of Our Father” or the Scriptures.
What is being said is, don’t let any man have the authority of God. Our Father has given us His word to follow.
Example: Church Fathers
Matthew 23:10 ESV
Neither be called instructors, for you have one instructor, the Christ.
a

III. Jesus is our Teacher, the One whom we follow without question, and the only one truly qualified to sit in Moses’ seat!

Matthew 23:11 ESV
The greatest among you shall be your servant.
Matthew 23:12 ESV
Whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be exalted.
This

IV. Jesus followers observe a radically different form of life, seeking humility rather than pride.
