Truth for a Lie

Who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator, who is blessed for ever. Amen. For this cause God gave them up unto vile affections: for even their women did change the natural use into that which is against nature: And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another; men with men working that which is unseemly, and receiving in themselves that recompence of their error which was meet.

1. The Exchanged of Truth for a Lie

a. The truth they exchanged is that God is altogether lovely and our greatest joy is to worship Him.

Thou wilt shew me the path of life: In thy presence is fulness of joy; At thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore.

b. The lie that they exchanged the truth for is that the creature is more desirable than God.

Romans 1:25 KJV 1900

Who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator, who is blessed for ever. Amen.

And changed the glory of the uncorruptible God into an image made like to corruptible man, and to birds, and fourfooted beasts, and creeping things.

2. God’s Judgement

Romans 1:18 KJV 1900

For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hold the truth in unrighteousness;

Romans 1:24 KJV 1900

Wherefore God also gave them up to uncleanness through the lusts of their own hearts, to dishonour their own bodies between themselves:

a. God gave them up unto vile affections

For this cause God gave them up unto vile affections: for even their women did change the natural use into that which is against nature:

b. God’s grace is active in the world in holding back wickedness

3. The Exchanged of the Natural for the Unnatural

For this cause God gave them up unto vile affections: for even their women did change the natural use into that which is against nature: And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another; men with men working that which is unseemly, and receiving in themselves that recompence of their error which was meet.

a. The natural: heterosexual relationship between a married couple.

This is the natural order ordained by the creator of the world.

Matthew 19:4–6 KJV 1900

And he answered and said unto them, Have ye not read, that he which made them at the beginning made them male and female, And said, For this cause shall a man leave father and mother, and shall cleave to his wife: and they twain shall be one flesh? Wherefore they are no more twain, but one flesh. What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder.

Sex is for a man and women who are married. This is how God created us.

It is a picture of God’s relationship with His people.

Ephesians 5:22–33 KJV 1900

Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as unto the Lord. For the husband is the head of the wife, even as Christ is the head of the church: and he is the saviour of the body. Therefore as the church is subject unto Christ, so let the wives be to their own husbands in every thing. Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it; That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word, That he might present it to himself a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish. So ought men to love their wives as their own bodies. He that loveth his wife loveth himself. For no man ever yet hated his own flesh; but nourisheth and cherisheth it, even as the Lord the church: For we are members of his body, of his flesh, and of his bones. For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and shall be joined unto his wife, and they two shall be one flesh. This is a great mystery: but I speak concerning Christ and the church. Nevertheless let every one of you in particular so love his wife even as himself; and the wife see that she reverence her husband.

The heterosexual marriage relationship pictures the joyful and fulfilling relationship between God and His people. The submitting and surrendering of ourselves in worship to God and the love and sanctification of the Church by God.

But this natural was exchanged for...

b. The unnatural: homosexual relationship.

Lets just go back and follow this thought process through

First they exchanged the truth about God (that our great joy and fulfilment is to worship Him) for the lie that the creature is more desirable and can give more pleasure that the creator.

So God gives them up to their vile affections and..

The judgement is that they exchange the natural heterosexual marriage relationship (which is a picture of our relationship with God) for a homosexual relationship (which is a picture of worshiping the creature rather than the creator). Some think that God will judge the world for all of the homosexuality that is going on (and He will in time) but the truth is that homosexuality is itself the judgement of God on the world for worshiping the creature instead of worshiping Him. And Paul points out that this recompense for our error is meet. that is the punishment perfectly fits the sin.

So the solution is not for homosexuals to stop being homosexuals. That may be a desired outcome but not the solution. The solution is that the world repent and return to their creator and worship Him.

The only hope for homosexuality or any other sin is to elevate God back to His rightful place in our life and worship Him in spirit and in truth.

1 Corinthians 6:9–11 KJV 1900

Know ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Be not deceived: neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor abusers of themselves with mankind, Nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners, shall inherit the kingdom of God. And such were some of you: but ye are washed, but ye are sanctified, but ye are justified in the name of the Lord Jesus, and by the Spirit of our God.
