2 For with what judgment you judge, you will be judged; and with the measure you use, it will be measured back to you.

1 Corinthians 11:27–28 NKJV
27 Therefore whoever eats this bread or drinks this cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty of the body and blood of the Lord. 28 But let a man examine himself, and so let him eat of the bread and drink of the cup.

27 Therefore whoever eats this bread or drinks this cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty of the body and blood of the Lord. 28 But let a man examine himself, and so let him eat of the bread and drink of the cup. 29 For he who eats and drinks in an unworthy manner eats and drinks judgment to himself, not discerning the Lord’s body. 30 For this reason many are weak and sick among you, and many sleep. 31 For if we would judge ourselves, we would not be judged. 32 But when we are judged, we are chastened by the Lord, that we may not be condemned with the world.

33 Therefore, my brethren, when you come together to eat, wait for one another. 34 But if anyone is hungry, let him eat at home, lest you come together for judgment. And the rest I will set in order when I come.

Psalm 26:2 NKJV
Examine me, O Lord, and prove me; Try my mind and my heart.
Jeremiah 17:9 NKJV
“The heart is deceitful above all things, And desperately wicked; Who can know it?
Jeremiah 17:9–10 NKJV
“The heart is deceitful above all things, And desperately wicked; Who can know it? I, the Lord, search the heart, I test the mind, Even to give every man according to his ways, According to the fruit of his doings.

1. First and foremost: I should not trust my heart.

my sin is still an issue after salvation. tells me that I cannot trust my heart.
only God can know my heart. I like to cut myself slack.

2. we should be careful not to pass Judgement on others.

28 But let a man examine himself, and so let him eat of the bread and drink of the cup. 29

Matthew 7:1–5 NKJV
1 “Judge not, that you be not judged. 2 For with what judgment you judge, you will be judged; and with the measure you use, it will be measured back to you. 3 And why do you look at the speck in your brother’s eye, but do not consider the plank in your own eye? 4 Or how can you say to your brother, ‘Let me remove the speck from your eye’; and look, a plank is in your own eye? 5 Hypocrite! First remove the plank from your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother’s eye.

2 For with what judgment you judge, you will be judged; and with the measure you use, it will be measured back to you.

Proverbs 3:34–35 NKJV
Surely He scorns the scornful, But gives grace to the humble. The wise shall inherit glory, But shame shall be the legacy of fools.
I have heard people say things like “I’m OK in this area so, bring it on!”
I think that the idea that you can judge in an area because you've got it together in an area misses the boat on sin.

3 And why do you look at the speck in your brother’s eye, but do not consider the plank in your own eye? 4 Or how can you say to your brother, ‘Let me remove the speck from your eye’; and look, a plank is in your own eye? 5 Hypocrite! First remove the plank from your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother’s eye.

is the point of the passage.
if you have never removed the “PLANK” from your own eye how can you see to remove the speck from another.
as we see the picture that Christ use it brings us to a point of perspective:
notice that Jesus says we have a plank
while our brother has only a speck.
while my sin in my own perspective is small its only because my heart has learned to look around this massive plank while criticizing my brother for a peace of saw dust.
if you came from a family or church where everything was a part of the narrative, where people were never “truly forgiven” then you learned to keep things close to your chest.

30 For this reason many are weak and sick among you, and many sleep.

a lot of people who’s father was a pastor/elder/ teacher, listened while people who served the church where had for lunch.
as a result the family member who you respected and sanctimoniously despised became synonymous with the church or even God Himself.
as a result we never come to understand a passion for God and the people of God that, properly modeled would change the world.

6 Brethren, if a man is overtaken in any trespass, you who are spiritual restore such a one in a spirit of gentleness, considering yourself lest you also be tempted.

to come of like you are so spiritual that you are above sin or temptation is not the truth. much more it is not helpful to anyone.

30 For this reason many are weak and sick among you, and many sleep.

7 Do not be deceived, God is not mocked; for whatever a man sows, that he will also reap. 8 For he who sows to his flesh will of the flesh reap corruption, but he who sows to the Spirit will of the Spirit reap everlasting life. 9 And let us not grow weary while doing good, for in due season we shall reap if we do not lose heart. 10 Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all, especially to those who are of the household of faith.

Many die because they will not Judge themselves, so their sin goes unchecked.
the one who doesn't loose weight could die of a heart attack.
recently a state trooper was making an arrest, the suspect resisted, a fight ensued, the trooper subdued the suspect. after cuffing the suspect the trooper suffered a heart attack on the side of the road and died.
people in law enforcement are the 2nd most obese profession in america.
God will not be mocked; whatever a man sows that also shall he reap.

What does it mean to examine yourself?
