Introduction: What is Worship?

Worship is dangerous.
Today we are going to be sharing in the Lord’s Supper.

Introduction What is Worship?

“Worship is the expression of reverence and adoration for God.” Tyndale Bible Dictionary
“True worship is the acknowledgment of God and all His power and glory in everything we do.” www.gotquestions.org
Worship is the awed response to the saving acts and praiseworthy character of God.” Lexham Theological Workbook

1. Worship is exalting God.

Part of worship is what you do and part of worship is how you do it.
First what you do to worship is exalt God.
Isaiah 25:1 NIV
1 Lord, you are my God; I will exalt you and praise your name, for in perfect faithfulness you have done wonderful things, things planned long ago.
Isaiah 25:1
“The verb describes moving things to a higher place. When used in a worship context, it means to make much of God for what he has done (; ; ; ). In other cases, it speaks about God’s status as the one above everything, inspiring awe (; ). Others should not lift themselves too high or think too much of themselves (; ; ; ). The heights, in this sense, are a place reserved for God alone ().”
Lexham Theological Wordbook. Bellingham, WA: Lexham Press.
McCaulley, E. (2014). Worship. D. Mangum, D. R. Brown, R. Klippenstein, & R. Hurst (Eds.), Lexham Theological Wordbook. Bellingham, WA: Lexham Press.
Worship is various seen as . . . music, prayer, Bible reading, singing, giving offerings, acts of service, work, religious activities, communion . . .

Lifting one’s hands toward heaven
Acts of service
Work

Burning incense
Teaching, fellowship, breaking bread-sharing the Lord’s Super
Serving
Collective praise of god
Being in a place - church today, tabernacle or later the Jerusalem temple
Burning incense
These are all part of worship but not all of worship. These may or may not be worship. It depends on whether they express reverence and adoration for God.
What we want to consider is how to exalt God. Unfortunately, there is

2. The wrong way to worship

A. Cain
We see this clearly in the first description of worship in the Bible.
Genesis 4:2–7 NIV
2 Later she gave birth to his brother Abel. Now Abel kept flocks, and Cain worked the soil. 3 In the course of time Cain brought some of the fruits of the soil as an offering to the Lord. 4 And Abel also brought an offering—fat portions from some of the firstborn of his flock. The Lord looked with favor on Abel and his offering, 5 but on Cain and his offering he did not look with favor. So Cain was very angry, and his face was downcast. 6 Then the Lord said to Cain, “Why are you angry? Why is your face downcast? 7 If you do what is right, will you not be accepted? But if you do not do what is right, sin is crouching at your door; it desires to have you, but you must rule over it.”
Genesis 4:2–5 NIV

Genesis 4:2
B. Nadab and Abihu Leviticus 10:1-2
Leviticus 10:1–2 NIV
1 Aaron’s sons Nadab and Abihu took their censers, put fire in them and added incense; and they offered unauthorized fire before the Lord, contrary to his command. 2 So fire came out from the presence of the Lord and consumed them, and they died before the Lord.
C. Some people at the Corinthians church 1 Corinthians 11:30
1 Corinthians 11:30 NIV
30 That is why many among you are weak and sick, and a number of you have fallen asleep.

1 Corinthians 11:

3. The right way to worship is God’s way.

Genesis 4:7 NIV
7 If you do what is right, will you not be accepted? But if you do not do what is right, sin is crouching at your door; it desires to have you, but you must rule over it.”

4. Right worship is intentional.

It doesn’t happen by accident. It doesn’t happen on its own.
It doesn’t happen on its own.
It doesn’t happen just because you are in church, listen to worship music, read your Bible or even pray.
You have to prepare for it. It includes your heart, hands, and mind/
It includes your heart, hands, and mind/

Motivation to Worship

The mercies of God. God’s love, grace, the gift of the Spirit, everlasting life, peace, comfort.
Romans 12:1–2 NIV
1 Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship. 2 Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.
God seeks worshipers.
John 4:23–24 NIV
23 Yet a time is coming and has now come when the true worshipers will worship the Father in the Spirit and in truth, for they are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks. 24 God is spirit, and his worshipers must worship in the Spirit and in truth.”

Manner of Worship

As a holy sacrifice to God. We worship God His way.
The wrong way is our way.
Genesis 4:7 NIV
7 If you do what is right, will you not be accepted? But if you do not do what is right, sin is crouching at your door; it desires to have you, but you must rule over it.”
Genesis 4:
Leviticus 10:3 NIV
3 Moses then said to Aaron, “This is what the Lord spoke of when he said: “ ‘Among those who approach me I will be proved holy; in the sight of all the people I will be honored.’ ” Aaron remained silent.
1 Corinthians 11:31 NIV
31 But if we were more discerning with regard to ourselves, we would not come under such judgment.
The right way is God’s way.
It has to include our
Hearts, minds, hands, thoughts, attitudes
There is a right and a wrong way to worship.
The wrong way is our way.
The right way is God’s way.
