Questions about James!
The author introduces himself as “James, a servant of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ” (). Of the New Testament persons named James who might have written this epistle, the (half) brother of Jesus seems most likely. He does not claim to be an apostle, but he could be considered one in the broad sense (cf. ; ). The apostle James, the son of Zebedee, had already been killed by the time this letter was written, and James, the son of Alphaeus, does not seem to have played a significant role in the early church. A number of scholars hold that the work is pseudonymous—perhaps even a Christian reworking of an earlier Jewish writing—or the product of yet another James.

Myers, Allen C. The Eerdmans Bible dictionary 1987 : 550. Print.

Before Jesus

John was one of the Son’s of Zebedee most likely the younger one mainly because he is mentioned after his brother James except for in Luke and Acts. While birth order is usually how a set of sons would be introduced, in Luke and Acts as Peter, John and James as John was so closely associated with Peter at the beginning of the church.

Johns mother was likely Salome this is an inference from
(HCSB) — 1 When the Sabbath was over, Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, and Salome bought spices, so they could go and anoint Him.
Matthew 27:56 HCSB
Among them were Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James and Joseph, and the mother of Zebedee’s sons.
Additionally it is very possible that John would have been Jesus cousin. This can be inferred from
Matthew 27:56 HCSB

John 19:25 HCSB
Standing by the cross of Jesus were His mother, His mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene.
His mothers sister likely refers to Salome.
He was a Fisherman with his father and his brother James .
While we know fisherman are not the most refined, it is very likely that James came from a more well to do family as his father had hired servants,
Mark 1:20 HCSB
Immediately He called them, and they left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired men and followed Him.
and his mother Salome likely is one of the women mentioned in
Luke 8:3 HCSB
Joanna the wife of Chuza, Herod’s steward; Susanna; and many others who were supporting them from their possessions.
John is usually identified as the un-named disciple that was with Andrew when John the Baptist pointed Jesus out and they went and followed and spent the day with him. This being the case it is possible that like Andrew brought Peter John may have brought James. However this is something that can not be known for certain.

With Jesus

We know that John was called with his brother James by Jesus
Mark 1:18–20 HCSB
Immediately they left their nets and followed Him. Going on a little farther, He saw James the son of Zebedee and his brother John. They were in their boat mending their nets. Immediately He called them, and they left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired men and followed Him.
Jesus as he often did gave John and James a different name, sometimes names are a good thing sometimes not.
Mark 3:17 HCSB
and to James the son of Zebedee, and to his brother John, He gave the name “Boanerges” (that is, “Sons of Thunder” );
The likely reason is they were high spirited impetuous Galileans who were pretty undisciplined and didn’t count they cost before they made statements.
John shows this when He wants to be a part of the exclusive Jesus club.
Luke 9:49–50 HCSB
John responded, “Master, we saw someone driving out demons in Your name, and we tried to stop him because he does not follow us.” “Don’t stop him,” Jesus told him, “because whoever is not against you is for you.”
One of my favorite pictures of Jesus showing his disciples a better way is when John and his brother wanted to prove how much they loved Jesus by burning up an entire town who wouldn’t let him walk through it.
Luke 9:51–56 HCSB
When the days were coming to a close for Him to be taken up, He determined to journey to Jerusalem. He sent messengers ahead of Him, and on the way they entered a village of the Samaritans to make preparations for Him. But they did not welcome Him, because He determined to journey to Jerusalem. When the disciples James and John saw this, they said, “Lord, do You want us to call down fire from heaven to consume them?” But He turned and rebuked them, and they went to another village.
I think though that the most telling thing that John and his brother had to deal with, was an over-inflated sense of self importance. Encouraged by their mother, something that also can support the idea that they were related to Jesus albiet as cousins.
Matthew 20:20–21 HCSB
Then the mother of Zebedee’s sons approached Him with her sons. She knelt down to ask Him for something. “What do you want?” He asked her. “Promise,” she said to Him, “that these two sons of mine may sit, one on Your right and the other on Your left, in Your kingdom.”
Mark 10:35–37 HCSB
Then James and John, the sons of Zebedee, approached Him and said, “Teacher, we want You to do something for us if we ask You.” “What do you want Me to do for you?” He asked them. They answered Him, “Allow us to sit at Your right and at Your left in Your glory.”
Interesting to note that the request is made either by his mother, or by the brothers. We do know that the brothers were there when it was made because of Jesus replay to them so similar in both books.
Mark 10:38–39 HCSB
But Jesus said to them, “You don’t know what you’re asking. Are you able to drink the cup I drink or to be baptized with the baptism I am baptized with?” “We are able,” they told Him. Jesus said to them, “You will drink the cup I drink, and you will be baptized with the baptism I am baptized with.
Matthew 20:22 HCSB
But Jesus answered, “You don’t know what you’re asking. Are you able to drink the cup that I am about to drink?” “We are able,” they said to Him.

We know that John is one of the Three disciples closest to Jesus. There are three occasions that point this out.
The raising of Jairus daughter.
Mark 5:36–37 HCSB
But when Jesus overheard what was said, He told the synagogue leader, “Don’t be afraid. Only believe.” He did not let anyone accompany Him except Peter, James, and John, James’s brother.
The Transfiguration.
Mark 9:2–4 HCSB
After six days Jesus took Peter, James, and John and led them up on a high mountain by themselves to be alone. He was transformed in front of them, and His clothes became dazzling—extremely white as no launderer on earth could whiten them. Elijah appeared to them with Moses, and they were talking with Jesus.
In Gethsemane when Jesus was praying.
Mark 14:33–34 HCSB
He took Peter, James, and John with Him, and He began to be deeply distressed and horrified. Then He said to them, “My soul is swallowed up in sorrow —to the point of death. Remain here and stay awake.”
Luke tells us that Peter and John were the ones sent to make preparation for Passover.
Luke 22:8 HCSB
Jesus sent Peter and John, saying, “Go and prepare the Passover meal for us, so we can eat it.”
Finally we know that John is the one known as the Disciple whom Jesus loved. While his name is never mentioned in the fourth gospel there are textual cues that tell us he was the one that wrote it.
John 21:20–24 HCSB
So Peter turned around and saw the disciple Jesus loved following them. That disciple was the one who had leaned back against Jesus at the supper and asked, “Lord, who is the one that’s going to betray You?” When Peter saw him, he said to Jesus, “Lord—what about him?” “If I want him to remain until I come,” Jesus answered, “what is that to you? As for you, follow Me.” So this report spread to the brothers that this disciple would not die. Yet Jesus did not tell him that he would not die, but, “If I want him to remain until I come, what is that to you?” This is the disciple who testifies to these things and who wrote them down. We know that his testimony is true.

After Jesus

John was a big part of the church in Acts. He know he was with Peter and that people were amazed at his knowledge even though he was untrained.
Acts 4:13 HCSB
When they observed the boldness of Peter and John and realized that they were uneducated and untrained men, they were amazed and recognized that they had been with Jesus.
That boldness used for good!
Acts 4:19–20 HCSB
But Peter and John answered them, “Whether it’s right in the sight of God for us to listen to you rather than to God, you decide; for we are unable to stop speaking about what we have seen and heard.”
We know John laid his hands on the Samaritans that had been converted through Philips ministry.
Acts 8:14–17 HCSB
When the apostles who were at Jerusalem heard that Samaria had welcomed God’s message, they sent Peter and John to them. After they went down there, they prayed for them, so the Samaritans might receive the Holy Spirit. For He had not yet come down on any of them; they had only been baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. Then Peter and John laid their hands on them, and they received the Holy Spirit.
He was a pillar of the church in Jerusalem acknowledged so by Paul.
(HCSB) — 9 When James, Cephas, and John, recognized as pillars, acknowledged the grace that had been given to me, they gave the right hand of fellowship to me and Barnabas, agreeing that we should go to the Gentiles and they to the circumcised. 10 They asked only that we would remember the poor, which I made every effort to do.
Johns end is different from other disciples.
While it is unclear when he left Jerusalem the assumption is that he did so and was in Ephesus where he was banished to the Isle of Patmos by The emperor Domitian because of the word of God and Testimony of and to Jesus. This again seems to indicate that he lived to an old age, much older than the other apostles.
Revelation 1:9 HCSB
I, John, your brother and partner in the tribulation, kingdom, and endurance that are in Jesus, was on the island called Patmos because of God’s word and the testimony about Jesus.
