Genesis 11:1–9 KJV 1900
And the whole earth was of one language, and of one speech. And it came to pass, as they journeyed from the east, that they found a plain in the land of Shinar; and they dwelt there. And they said one to another, Go to, let us make brick, and burn them throughly. And they had brick for stone, and slime had they for morter. And they said, Go to, let us build us a city and a tower, whose top may reach unto heaven; and let us make us a name, lest we be scattered abroad upon the face of the whole earth. And the Lord came down to see the city and the tower, which the children of men builded. And the Lord said, Behold, the people is one, and they have all one language; and this they begin to do: and now nothing will be restrained from them, which they have imagined to do. Go to, let us go down, and there confound their language, that they may not understand one another’s speech. So the Lord scattered them abroad from thence upon the face of all the earth: and they left off to build the city. Therefore is the name of it called Babel; because the Lord did there confound the language of all the earth: and from thence did the Lord scatter them abroad upon the face of all the earth.
7. The Tower of Babel

BUILDING THE TOWER OF BABEL

THE SITUATION

Genesis 11:1–2 KJV 1900
And the whole earth was of one language, and of one speech. And it came to pass, as they journeyed from the east, that they found a plain in the land of Shinar; and they dwelt there.
A. Speech—v. 1. Everyone spoke the same language since they all lived in the same area.
B. Stubborn—v. 2. All the people remained in the same area even though God had told them to scatter and fill the earth. Being stubborn leads to many problems and sins.

THE SIN

Genesis 1:3–4 KJV 1900
And God said, Let there be light: and there was light. And God saw the light, that it was good: and God divided the light from the darkness.
A. Plan:
To build a tower that would reach into heaven. Man has always sought his way to heaven. He refuses to accept God’s way. Note some of man’s ways to heaven:
1. Good works ().
We are not saved by what we do, but what Christ has done for us.
Ephesians 2:8–9 KJV 1900
For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast.
2. Good character—().
All men are sinners. If good character could save, why did Christ suffer and die?
Romans 3:23 KJV 1900
For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;
3. Church membership (; ).
There is only one way to salvation—through Christ.
Acts 4:12 KJV 1900
Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.
John 14:6 KJV 1900
Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.
4. Water baptism ().
Note: repent first, then be baptized. All these are good, but these do not produce salvation. Salvation comes first, then these and other good things follow.
Acts 2:38 KJV 1900
Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.
B. Pride. Note: “Make a name for ourselves.” They thought only of selfish interests. God is not mentioned.
C. Problem: “lest we be scattered from the face of the earth.” This was disobedience unto God. God had told them to scatter. You cannot disobey God and be happy or successful.

THE SCATTERING

Genesis 11:5–9 KJV 1900
And the Lord came down to see the city and the tower, which the children of men builded. And the Lord said, Behold, the people is one, and they have all one language; and this they begin to do: and now nothing will be restrained from them, which they have imagined to do. Go to, let us go down, and there confound their language, that they may not understand one another’s speech. So the Lord scattered them abroad from thence upon the face of all the earth: and they left off to build the city. Therefore is the name of it called Babel; because the Lord did there confound the language of all the earth: and from thence did the Lord scatter them abroad upon the face of all the earth.
GENESIS
A. Concern—v. 5.
God became concerned. He came down to visit the tower. Though God was not invited, He came anyway. God is interested in all the affairs of man.
Genesis 11:5 KJV 1900
And the Lord came down to see the city and the tower, which the children of men builded.
GENSIS
B. Constrained—v. 6.
There was no limit as to how far these people might go. Man needs control and restraint. If man does not practice this, God must step in and do it.
Genesis 11:6 KJV 1900
And the Lord said, Behold, the people is one, and they have all one language; and this they begin to do: and now nothing will be restrained from them, which they have imagined to do.
C. Confusion—vv. 7–8.
God confounded (or confused) their language. They could not continue with the tower since they could not understand each other.
Genesis 11:7–8 KJV 1900
Go to, let us go down, and there confound their language, that they may not understand one another’s speech. So the Lord scattered them abroad from thence upon the face of all the earth: and they left off to build the city.
D. Control—v. 9.
These men seemed to forget that God was in control of man. God permits man to go only so far. Here He scattered the people.
Genesis 11:9 KJV 1900
Therefore is the name of it called Babel; because the Lord did there confound the language of all the earth: and from thence did the Lord scatter them abroad upon the face of all the earth.
