Details, Details

The Setting

The east side of the Sea of Galilee, which is in modern day Syria lies a group of towns.
Jesus has healed leprosy, the Centurion’s servant, Peter’s Mother-in-law and others, declared the difficulties of following Him, and calmed the sea to get to this moment.
It is easy to miss the point that Jesus determined int he midst of all of these events to cross the Sea of Galilee to go to this very place at this very time.

The People

In placing this event on the east side of the sea, we also see that this region is overwhelmingly made up of gentiles.
Among those in the story include:
(1) the two demon-possessed men
(2) the pig herders
(3) the townspeople

The Main Event

Jesus’ compassion led him to venture into a Gentile area to this encounter with these two men whose lives were beyond our belief.
The men were relegated to living in the cemetery where Mark and Luke tell us their violent behavior has led to at least one of them being chained up there to prevent him from harming others and even the chains could not restrain him.
This was not a situation where the men were just unruly. Mark’s account of the event tells us there were many demons involved who were controlling these men’s behavior.
Encountering the men, Jesus cast the demons out of the men and into a herd of pigs.
even the chains could not restrain him.

Dumb and Dumber

The Demon’s Response to Jesus

They recognized Jesus for who He was.
They realize they are eventually going to be tormented for eternity.
They are making as much noise as they can until then.

The GadarenesResponse to Jesus

The Farmer’s lost their herd
The city asked Jesus to leave
None of them recognized the change in the demon possessed men.
None celebrated their deliverance.
None realized that Jesus had made their lives better by removing the danger these demons posed to their everyday life.

Decisions, Decisions

Recognize His Authority

We have seen now Jesus heal from up close and far away, command nature, and rebuke demonic influences.
Disease, weather and demons are subject to His authority.

Rejoice in His Presence

When Jesus works in your life, REJOICE!
The presence of God is reason to celebrate.

Rest in His Deliverance

Luke 8:35 NASB95
The people went out to see what had happened; and they came to Jesus, and found the man from whom the demons had gone out, sitting down at the feet of Jesus, clothed and in his right mind; and they became frightened.
Mark 5:15 NASB95
They came to Jesus and observed the man who had been demon-possessed sitting down, clothed and in his right mind, the very man who had had the “legion”; and they became frightened.
If you have experienced God’s power, rest in His deliverance.
The man went on to tell people what Jesus had done and people were amazed.
