School is in Session
My dad’s teaching style.
Jesus seems to have the same method.
Peter needs to learn what it takes to be a disciple.
So God bring, to Peters house, a group of men who show us all, what it takes to be disciples of Jesus.
The actions of these men, speak throughout the ages.
Their names are not known but their deeds have been preached on thousands of times.
what they did was show Peter the Level of Faith, the level of obedience, the level of Courage and the level of co-operation that is required to be a good disciple.
The Level of Faith.
That these 4 men had great faith is not up for debate.
Jesus took special notice and mention of their faith.
Let me say this clearly: Faith is absolutely vital to being a disciple.
You must believe that God is, and that He is faithful to His Word.
What this mean is that you cannot be a good and faithful servant of almighty if you do not believe that will do what His Word says.
Walking by sight is to believe you eyes, walking by faith is to believe God’s Word.
Faith governs our whole spiritual life - Whatever we do, we do by faith and if we have no faith, then our motivation goes with it.
We read the bible by faith - Faith that it is the very Word of God.
We Attend this church service by Faith - Faith that God reward those who diligently seek Him.
Even our Prayers are controlled by Faith.
We must have Faith.
A Level of Obedience.
Obedience and Faith go hand in hand.
Obedience requires Faith in itself.
When Jesus preached to the crowds, they were sometimes in excess of over 5000 people.
5000 people heard, but very few actually obeyed.
Obedience is how we know our faith is real.
Obedience is how we know our love for God is real.
Obedience is how we know our salvation is real.
Let me say this clearly: Obedience to Christ is going to cost you.
Its going to cost you friends, Its going to cost you the respect of the world.
Its going to cost you your “rights”.
Its going to cost you a lucrative, but shady buisnes deal.
its going to cost you.
These 4 men counted the cost and decided it was worth it.
What do you say?
A Level of Courage
a few weeks ago Justin exhorted us to be strong and very courageous.
Disciples need courage.
why?
Because disciples are always faced with discourage.
When you are discouraged, it means literally “dis” - Without courage.
When dome one is dis-armed - its the same.
Satan wants to discourage you in the same way a thief wants to dis-arm you.
A disarmed person cannot defend them selves, and a discouraged Christian is the same.
When these men, carrying their friend came and was the crowds, you have to know that they were faced with a huge discouragement.
Things do not always turn out how we planned or how we hoped.
When this happens we can turn around and go home in defeat or like these men we can walk by faith, have courage and figure it out.
Cowardice is a sin church.
WE are commanded to be to strong, to be brave, to have courage.
A special note to the men: Act like men, in a situation be convicted.
Stand by your wife and support her, if she is wrong, say so and man up.
Don’t be a lukewarm house leader who never stands for anything.
A Level of Cooperation
I want to see that what these 4 men did together would most likely have been impossible if they were alone.
1 man could not have carried the sick, climbed on the roof, lifted the sick, made a hole and lowered him slowly and safely down.
Disciples of Jesus know that they are just a single part of the body and they for the mission to succeed they need to whole body to work together.
“Christians” who are not part of a regular local fellowship are no Christians at all.
I say that because no true christians things they they don’t need the support, help and encouragement of their brothers and sisters.
My life - impossible with kim.
My Ministry Leaders.
My folks who help me wonderfully
I have silent beneficiaries who make it possible for me to live on my small salary because they pay for many of my living expenses.
they recently called me and said they were going to pay for bells school fees for all of next year.
Incredible.
but the point is, no not make the grave mistake of thinking that I can stand on my own without God and the grace of His church.
We cannot go alone.
we need each other.
Amen.
