Officers had been sent by the Pharisees to arrest Jesus...
Focus verses:
The devil will try and tell you that you are deceived.
But the truth is that there is no one like Jesus.
Jesus is unique because of...
How and why He came into the world
Jesus is the only one who chose to be born
Jesus was with the Father before He before creation:
Jesus chose to become a human being:
Not only was Jesus the only one who chose to be born...
Jesus is the only one who was born to die
A ransom is the price paid to secure someone’s release.
The price was His own life, and He came to earth to pay it.
The next reason Jesus is unique is because of...
What He did and said in the world
Note - “what kind of man is this?”
But it is not only what Jesus did that was unique...
Note - “deed and word”
He preached against the hypocrisy of the religious leaders
He taught people to love God and one another
He was radical about personal sin
His message was full of practical wisdom
He was full of grace and mercy
When the woman was caught in the act of adultery...
Also...
We have seen that Jesus is unique because of...
How and why He came into the world
What he did and said in the world.
But He is also unique because of...
The way He left the word
We could say that Jesus left the world twice:
His death
His ascension
But I want to focus on His death...
When Jesus died on the cross some amazing things happened...
Because of Jesus’ death, the veil in the temple was supernaturally torn in two.
No human could have torn it - it was:
60 feet long
30 feet wide
As thick as a man’s palm
So heavy that it took 300 men to lift it when it was wet
Notice it was torn from top to bottom.
As the veil was 60 feet high, no human is tall enough to have done that.
God Himself tore it, to indicate that through Jesus’ death on the cross, there was no more barrier between us and God.
We can all approach Him through Jesus.
Not only that, when Jesus died there was an earthquake which caused the graves to be opened, and many people were resurrected too, and walked around in the holy city appearing to many!
Who else had left the world like this?
Not only is Jesus unique because of...
How and why He came into the world
What He did and said in the world
The way He left the word
He is also unique because of...
The way He came back into the world
He came back from death in the same body He died in.
But there was something different about it...
It was the same body (He showed them His hands and His side where He had been pierced)
But there was something different too.
Notice they had locked the doors, but Jesus somehow walked in!
His body had been changed.
This points to the fact that when we come to Jesus, He changes us.
Even as His body was made new, spiritually, we are made new too!
I.e.
we have a new inclination.
Whereas we delighted in sin before, we now want to do what is right.
We want to bless our enemies etc.
In our opening passage, the Pharisees accused the officers of being deceived.
How do we know that we haven’t been decieved?
Because of what Jesus has done, and is doing inside us!
As the songwriter Alfred Ackley wrote in his song, “He lives”:
“You ask me how I know He lives?
He lives within my heart”
And that is something every born again Christian can say - Jesus lives within me!
Summary
Jesus is unique because of...
How and why He came into the world
What He did and said in the world
The way He left the word
The way He came back into the world
We know that Jesus lives because He lives within our hearts
