If you really love...
These words have been uttered on countless occasions to manipulate individuals to reactive in a specific way.
As in the case of the OT Hebrew strong man, Samson.
It was these words that caused him to divulge the secret of his strength to the woman Delilah.
And so, from the very start we need to be mindful that love is not just a word to play around with.
The neo-soul and R&B singer Musiq Soulchild says it like this: “Love, so many people use your name in vain”.
The love relationship that we have been afforded to have with Jesus can unfortunately, sometimes, get off track.
Its true, sometimes we let things like pride, ambition, wickedness, selfishness get in the way of our relationship with Jesus and find ourselves a long way from the relationship that means the most to us.
Context of the Text
See
Peter’s denial of Jesus got him off track
His being off track caused him to give up on his calling and go back to his former occupation.
He was unsuccessful at what he used to be good at because he was off track.
We can get back on track by
RUSHING INTO THE PRESENCE OF JESUS (vv.
1-9)
There is never a time when the Lord is not present.
That’s because He is Omnipresent.
See , this text tells us that even before the disciples ever arrived at this location Jesus was there.
Peter did not wait for the boat to dock or come to land; the text says that jumped out of the boat.
That is to say that “He Rushed” into the presence of the Lord.
RESPONDING TO THE COMMAND OF JESUS -
Peter had been present at all of the post resurrection appearances of Jesus to the disciples and during each visit, Jesus had not spoken to Peter personally.
Remember, Peter had denied knowing Jesus, now he discouraged to the point that he attempts to return to this former occupation before meet Jesus.
When the boat finally landed, Jesus gave a command (v 10), it was Peter who went up and drew the net to land.
It is something about being asked to do anything for Jesus that ought to cause us to hurry to respond to His command.
Peter had been present at all of the post resurrection appearances of Jesus to the disciples and during each visit, Jesus had not spoken to Peter personally.
Remember, Peter had denied knowing Jesus, now he discouraged to the point that he attempts to return to this former occupation before meetPet
Jesus gave another command that helped Peter get back on track.
He said “come and dine”.
This suggests that we must respond to his invitation to fellowship with Him. if we opt out of fellowship with Him, we will never get back on track.
RETURNING TO THE LOVE OF JESUS (vv.
15-21)
RETURNING TO THE LOVE OF JESUS
Fellowship with the Lord creates an atmosphere of transparent intimacy.
Such an atmosphere gave rise to the question that Jesus posited to this disparaging disciple: “Do you love Me more than these” (i.e., fish, nets, boats, sea-life, other people).
We get off track whenever we allow ourselves to love anything or anyone more than we love the Lord.
We must love Him “More than Anything”.
Conclusion
It is important to get back on track because there are others who are following us
We must get back on track because there are lambs and sheep to feed.
bed
We must get back on track because we have a charge to keep and a God to glorify.
