The Man of God in the New Testament
specifically calls out Timothy as a “man of God”
speaks of men in general
Specifically, a man of God is a “male Christian” who has been called and ordained by God to do a specific work in the ministry.
Timothy was only one of them
Generally, a man of God is “any believer”, whether male or female, who is called of God to salvation and ordained to manifest the perfect will of God through a life of service.
1 and 2 Timo
1 and 2 Timothy are first and foremost personal letters of Paul to Timothy.
Secondly, they are Scripture designed to instruct and equip believers in general.
Adam, the First Man
Adam was the first human
Adam was the first man of God
Before Adam was given a wife and a family to raise and nurture, He received 4 important things from God.
First, he was fashioned by the Hand of God.
as the first man of God, Adam was first to be molded by the hand of God into a person that God wanted him to be.
Second, he was instructed to work
“cultivate” the garden
as the first man of God, Adam was first to receive the command to work.
Third, he was instructed to keep the garden
“keep” the garden
as the first man of God, Adam was the first to be given responsibility to safeguard something that is important to God’s economy.
Fourth, he received God’s perfect will
Genesis 2.17-18
as the first man of God, Adam was first to learn God’s perfect will for their lives on earth.
Note:
Gensis 2.16-17
Only after these things were done and given to Adam, did God say “it is not good for the man to be alone...”
Therefore, it is not advisable for a man to become husband to a wife unless these 4 things are true in his life.
Timothy, the Man of God
Paul’s letters to Timothy contained instructions that are similar to those given to Adam.
First, Timothy was touched by God
God touched his life in 2 significant ways: (1) during his childhood; and (2) in his adult life
The Scripture had a huge influence in his growing up years
2 Timothy 3.1
1 Timothy 4.14
2
the prophecy was followed by the laying on of hands, in which occasion the Spirit of God began to move mightily in his life.
Second, Timothy received a task, a work to accomplish
Paul assigned him a work according to the gift given to him
Third, he was entrusted with important responsibilities
this verse is followed by a series of instructions about church activities, works, leadership, functions, relationships (chapters 2-6)
Paul was instructed to “watch over” (keep) the responsibilities under his care
Fourth, Timothy was given the Word of God
2 Timothy 3.
The Scripture is enough to adequately equip the man of God for the work of ministry.
The Man of God Today

you are appointed to manifest the perfect will of God

1 Timothy 4.16
