Get Real: Jesus Sits Down

Matthew 5:1–6 ESV
1 Seeing the crowds, he went up on the mountain, and when he sat down, his disciples came to him. 2 And he opened his mouth and taught them, saying: 3 “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. 4 “Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted. 5 “Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth. 6 “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied.
The first 4 beatitudes addresses complete dependance upon God.

Poor in Spirit?

“know their need for God.” NEB
“know their need for God.”

The poor in spirit in the sense of this beatitude are those who recognize that they are completely and utterly destitute in the realm of the spirit. They recognize their lack of spiritual resources and therefore their complete dependence on God

“Those who mourn”

Those who grieve over sin and evil in their own lives as well as the world.
Psalm 119:136 ESV
136 My eyes shed streams of tears, because people do not keep your law.
Isaiah 61:1–2 ESV
1 The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me, because the Lord has anointed me to bring good news to the poor; he has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to those who are bound; 2 to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor, and the day of vengeance of our God; to comfort all who mourn;
Isa 61

“the meek”

Meekness is genuine humility. Having the strength not to assert their own rights and privileges but instead serves the Lord putting aside their own agendas.

“those who hunger and thirst for righteousness”

These people have a passionate concern for doing what is right.
Paul’s righteousness vs Matthews use of the word righteousness.
Paul speaks of righteousness only obtained through Jesus, being made right with God. This is a gift from God made available through Jesus. We receive this gift upon salvation.
Matthew wants us to be passionate about doing what is right in the here and now. (heaven to history)
Because of our longing for what is right, God will fill us.
