What is our purpose as the body of Christ, as the church?
To make disciples.
What did the early church look like when they first formed and began the task of making disciples?
Sunday School for a New Century by Bill Taylor and Louis Hanks
“Sunday School is the foundational strategy in a local church for leading people to faith in the Lord Jesus Christ and for building Great Commission Christians through Bible study groups that engage people in evangelism, discipleship, fellowship, ministry and worship.”
KEY Strategies for Healthy Sunday Schools by Steve Parr
“Sunday School is not just another organization of the church.
It is the church organized...”
Making disciples:
Go — Evangelize
Baptize — new believers are saved through hearing the gospel
Teach — from immature believers become mature believers through the studying and applying God’s Word to their lives.
Acts chapter 2 — Peter evangelized, they accepted his message (the gospel) through faith, were baptized, and repented (pursued holiness)
Listen to how God tells us that we are to be growing as followers of Him and if the Holy Spirit convicts you by any of these words, don’t ignore them, ask God to forgive you and grow in maturity in that area of your life.
------------------------
We are starting fresh with our Sunday School and we will be working hard to evaluate and improve the way we make disciples in this church.
Our Sunday School classes are our outreach arms of the church.
These classes are where the majority of new believers should be coming into the church.
Classes where there is life and safe open discussion.
You may have a lot of questions in your head swirling around while I am up here preaching but you don’t get an opportunity during this worship time to ask any of those questions and so most of those questions will go unanswered.
But in Sunday School classes, if done well, will give you the opportunities that you need to ask questions and have two-way conversation.
But healthy Sunday School classes do not just look inward, they reach out.
