Noah’s Family Tragedy
DISGRACE:: Noah, the father, is found passed out and naked in his tent (Gen 9:18-21)
Righteous Noah got drunk!
The same that was upright in his generations.
The one who just saved his family on an ark.
The same man that is in the chapter of the heroes of faith.
The capacity for sin came off the ark with Noah and his family.
Like his father before him, Noah became a farmer.
He planted grapes and made wine
grapes, raisins and wine were important elements in the diet of Easters peoples.
Wine was considered a blessing from God.
Is drunkenness a sin or a disease?
PSa 104:
God doesn’t prohibit a disease!
He prohibits sin!
We have freedom in Christ but we can fall into the ditch of legalism or the ditch of license.
A little to serve not to do our own thing, knowing we are loved and accepted by Him
Legalism says Christians can’t drink alcohol.
“I’m spiritual because I don’t drink alcohol”.
Or the new legalist says, “Oh you don’t drink, you must be a legalist”.
That is a legalistic statement.
License abuses the grace of God for self-indulgence.
License = drunkenness is not a license it is a sin.
Deut 14
The abuse of wine to the point of drunkenness however is sin.
But because drunkenness is a sin, it is forgivable through the blood of Jesus Christ!
It is deliverable by the power of Christ through the power of the Holy Spirit.
You get to know your new position in the Lord and can present yourself to the HS and be delivered.
All sin has consequences!
Sometimes it carries on in our children, grandchildren etc
Even what appears to be a ‘minor’ sin can have ‘major’ long term ramification in your life and family
God never allows his children to sin successfully - Spurgeon
There’s always a price to pay
All sin has consequences!
Sometimes it carries on in our children, grandchildren etc
Ironically (the pastor says) Find 10 of the biggest drunks in town and 5 of them are christians bucking against the Lord.
When you are not walking with the Lord you are in rebellion against the Lord.
You start trying to fill the void with stuff.
At this moment then, as a believer you are being led by the flesh to do its works which incidentally drunkenness happens to be one.
But because drunkenness is a sin, it is forgivable through the blood of Jesus Christ!
It is deliverable by the power of Christ through the power of the Holy Spirit.
You get to know your new position in the Lord and can present yourself to the HS and be delivered.
Christians are not sinless!
Yet as they walk by the power of the Holy Spirit, they will sin less!!!!
Here at the Beacon, we are a family.
We have our issues, like Noah did in his.
However, the answer is not in acceptance of our sin but in the acceptance of Christ’s deliverance from our sin by grace.
DISRESPECT:: Ham, the youngest son, gleefully shares the embarrassing tragedy with his older brothers (Gen 9:22)
Ham sees his father’s state and runs to tell his brothers
Shem and Japheth
DECENCY:: The older brothers, Shem and Japheth reverently cover their father (Gen 9:23)
By walking backwards and holding a garment, they cover their father
DECLARATION:: Noah comes to.
Family curses and blessings are foretold.
(Gen 9:24-27)
The only recorded words of Noah
The wrong is addressed.
Generations to follow will suffer the consequences.
The prophecy focuses on Canaan.
Ham is not cursed and the curse is not fulfilled in Canaan.
How could this be?
The prophecy will be fulfilled with the Canaanite people.
The prophecy will be fulfilled with the Canaanite people, not with Canaan
himself.
Many rightfully argue that this passage explains some of the reason why God allows Israel to go and take the Land where the Canaanites dwell.
This is significant to Moses’ readers.
They will have to fight against the Canaanites!!
No curse on Ham or Canaan but the Canaanites (remember there is consequence for sin).
The right is validated and God is glorified
The prophecy will be fulfilled with the Canaanite people, not with Canaan
himself.
The right is validated and God is glorified
Many rightfully argue that this passage explains some of the reason why God
Shem did the right thing
Noah does not bless Shem, he blessed “the Lord the God of Shem”.
Shem’s actions gave glory to God
The promised deliverer would one day come through Shem
Many rightfully argue that this passage explains some of the reasons why God allows Israel to go and take the Land where the Canaanites dwell.
Japheth’s blessing is dependent on Shem
allows Israel to go and take the Land where the Canaanites dwell.
While any of Japheth’s descendents would be in a harmonious state with Shem, they would be blessed.
DEATH:: Noah, like it is appointed to all men, dies at 950 (Gen 9:28-29)
Many rightfully argue that this passage explains some of the reasons why God allows Israel to go and take the Land where the Canaanites dwell.
The right is validated and God is glorified
Application
We see that the virtues and vices of Noah's sons became the virtues and vices of the families of the world.
If you’re a believer here today, don’t underestimate the consequence of sin.
Don’t play with sin.
God wants to empower you to deliverance from sin (drunkenness, gossip)
Ham was craving the approval of his brothers.
In so doing, he disrespected his father.
Instead of treating his dad with dignity, he went and gossiped about it.
Hey guys, you gotta see this.
Shem was seeking to please the Lord.
As a result, God was given the glory.
Love doesn’t cleanse sin, for only the blood of Christ can do that (); nor does love condone sin, for love wants God’s very best for others.
But love does cover sin and doesn’t go around exposing sin and encouraging others to spread the bad news…
Who’s approval do you crave?
How do you handle another’s sin.
Are you quick to gossip?
