Hebrews 11:6 ESV
6 And without faith it is impossible to please him, for whoever would draw near to God must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him.
Thesis: A fundamental duty for all people including the necessary response to God’s self-revelation. The only channel through which God’s blessings may be received, and the only means by which life may be made meaningful, in relationship with God.
Introduction:

I. The call to faith

A. In the OT

Psalm 37:3-5
Psalm 37:3–5 ESV
3 Trust in the Lord, and do good; dwell in the land and befriend faithfulness. 4 Delight yourself in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart. 5 Commit your way to the Lord; trust in him, and he will act.
also rf. - Pr 3:5–6; Is 26:4; Is 50:10

B. In the NT

John 6:28-29
John 6:28–29 ESV
28 Then they said to him, “What must we do, to be doing the works of God?” 29 Jesus answered them, “This is the work of God, that you believe in him whom he has sent.”
also rf. - Mk 1:15; Ac 16:30–31; Ac 19:4; Ac 20:21; Ro 1:5; 1 Jn 3:23

II. God’s self-revelation leaves no excuse for unbelief

John 14:8-11
John 14:8–11 ESV
8 Philip said to him, “Lord, show us the Father, and it is enough for us.” 9 Jesus said to him, “Have I been with you so long, and you still do not know me, Philip? Whoever has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’? 10 Do you not believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me? The words that I say to you I do not speak on my own authority, but the Father who dwells in me does his works. 11 Believe me that I am in the Father and the Father is in me, or else believe on account of the works themselves.
Romans 10:17-18
Romans 10:17–18 ESV
17 So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ. 18 But I ask, have they not heard? Indeed they have, for “Their voice has gone out to all the earth, and their words to the ends of the world.”
also rf - Ps 19:4; Jn 1:10–12; Ro 1:18–21; Ro 3:1–4; Ps 51:4; Ro 16:25–27

III. The need for faith in God

A. The Lord is the only true God

Habakkuk 2:18-20
Habakkuk 2:18–20 ESV
18 “What profit is an idol when its maker has shaped it, a metal image, a teacher of lies? For its maker trusts in his own creation when he makes speechless idols! 19 Woe to him who says to a wooden thing, Awake; to a silent stone, Arise! Can this teach? Behold, it is overlaid with gold and silver, and there is no breath at all in it. 20 But the Lord is in his holy temple; let all the earth keep silence before him.”
also rf. - Ps 115:2–11

B. God alone can be trusted absolutely

Psalm 9:10
Psalm 9:10 ESV
10 And those who know your name put their trust in you, for you, O Lord, have not forsaken those who seek you.
also rf. - Ps 91:1–4; Is 12:2; Na 1:7

C. Faith in God is the basis for peace

Isaiah 26:3
Isaiah 26:3 ESV
3 You keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on you, because he trusts in you.
also rf. - Ps 42:11; Jn 14:1; Ro 15:13; 2 Pe 1:1–2

D. Faith is necessary to receive God’s blessing

Hebrews 11:6
Hebrews 11:6 ESV
6 And without faith it is impossible to please him, for whoever would draw near to God must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him.
also rf. - Ps 40:4; Je 17:7–8; Jn 5:24

E. Faith is necessary to avoid God’s judgment

John 3:6
John 3:36 ESV
36 Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life; whoever does not obey the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God remains on him.
also rf. - Jn 3:18; 2 Th 2:12; 1 Pe 2:6–8; Is 28:16; Ps 118:22; Is 8:14

IV. Actions not springing from faith are sinful

Romans 14:23
Romans 14:23 ESV
23 But whoever has doubts is condemned if he eats, because the eating is not from faith. For whatever does not proceed from faith is sin.
also rf. - Ro 14:5–8; Ro 14:14

V. Unbelief challenged

A. In the OT

Psalm 95:7-8
Psalm 95:7–8 ESV
7 For he is our God, and we are the people of his pasture, and the sheep of his hand. Today, if you hear his voice, 8 do not harden your hearts, as at Meribah, as on the day at Massah in the wilderness,

B. In the NT

Mark 16:14
Mark 16:14 ESV
14 Afterward he appeared to the eleven themselves as they were reclining at table, and he rebuked them for their unbelief and hardness of heart, because they had not believed those who saw him after he had risen.

Hear - Romans 10:17

Romans 10:17 ESV17 So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ.

Believe and Confess - Romans 10:9-10

Romans 10:9–10 ESV9 because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For with the heart one believes and is justified, and with the mouth one confesses and is saved.

Repent - Luke 13:3

Luke 13:3 ESV3 No, I tell you; but unless you repent, you will all likewise perish.

Be Baptized - Romans 6:3-4

Romans 6:3–4 ESV3 Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? 4 We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life.

Remain Faithful - Revelation 2:10

Revelation 2:10 ESV10 Do not fear what you are about to suffer. Behold, the devil is about to throw some of you into prison, that you may be tested, and for ten days you will have tribulation. Be faithful unto death, and I will give you the crown of life.
