Os Guinness spotlights this contradiction in his excellent book The American Hour.  “The present situation is reminiscent of the 1920’s quip about a fundamentalist being someone who talks of standing on the rock of ages, but acts as if he were clinging to the last piece of driftwood.”  Generation X picks up very quickly on this kind of incongruity and asks, “So, like, what’s really going on?”
