I appeal to you therefore - Paul makes a plea to the Romans to do what he is telling them to do.
He is earnestly encouraging them to listen to him.
Brothers - He is speaking to the church that is Rome.
This is group of believers.
He is calling them to live as a Christian should.
He is not making this request to those that are still dead in trespasses and sin.

Brothers -
By the mercies of God - The context for the plea that the Apostle is making is the mercy of God or the mercy that have its source in God.
It is the favor of the divine Being upon his children.
The mercies of God have been laid out by the Apostle in chapters 1-11.
The demand of the Christian life must be encouraged and empowered by the favor of God.
If one were to attempt to live out the demands of God without the mercy of God, it would be an utter failure.
We need to grow in our understanding of the finished work of Christ in order to live out the Christian life.

To present your bodies as a living sacrifice - The command is to make a continual offering of our person to God.
Our life is to be lived dead to self and alive to God.
Paul uses the language of the OT sacrificial system.
Our offering to God is our very existence.

Holy and acceptable to God - The language here is of consecration or being set apart for the use of God in a way that is pleasing to him.
When we offer ourselves to our Creator and Redeemer in this way, he approves of the sacrifice.
Which is your spiritual worship - The offering is what is expected from us by God.

When we live for God, we are living in the full purpose for which we were made.

Do not be conformed to this world - Make sure that you are not fashioned together with the pattern of this fallen system on the earth.
Do not be squeezed into the mold of this world’s ways.
Avoid the desire to do, the desire to have and the desire to be.
The Christian Life Calls Us to a Radical Change of Thought
But be transformed - In contrast to being fashioned and shaped by the world and its ways, be completely changed.
This is the word where we get metamorphosis.
This transformation is the total progressive change into another type of person.
The power is provided by another.
What is the path of this transformation?
But be transformed
By the renewal of your mind - To be transformed, there must be a making new or a renovation of the mind.
Our minds are the trigger point to a new life lived from God.

The Christian Life Calls Us to Wisdom
That by testing you may discern - When one has a renewed mind, they are able to prove, test or distinguish clearly the most important reality.
What is this?
What would God have me to do?
We will have wisdom in what we should do.
That by testing you may discern what is the will of God
What is the will of God - The will of God in this case is what God would have be to do.
This is not primarily about subjective, disconnected decisions.

What is good and acceptable and perfect - The will of God is in fact what is profitable, useful and excellent.
It is what is pleasing to God.
It is what it complete and not lacking in any way.
