Be like Christ

1 Peter 4:1 ESV
Since therefore Christ suffered in the flesh, arm yourselves with the same way of thinking, for whoever has suffered in the flesh has ceased from sin,
Arm yourself for battle
equip yourself with something
Arm
frequently indicating military preparations
so make military preparations for yourself!
used to denote power
But arm is also used to denote the power & the omnipotence of God
What is our only useful weapon of choice then?
2 Corinthians 10:3-
2 Corinthians 10:3–5 ESV
For though we walk in the flesh, we are not waging war according to the flesh. For the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh but have divine power to destroy strongholds. We destroy arguments and every lofty opinion raised against the knowledge of God, and take every thought captive to obey Christ,
Also used of the omnipotence of God
In , Jesus full of the Holy Spirit was led by the Spirit in the wilderness for 40 days to be tempted by the devil
Luke 4:18–19 ESV
“The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.”
Luke 4:18
equip with something

Ephesians 6:10–11 ESV
Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might. Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil.
Romans 12:2 ESV
Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.
Romans 12:
Wrestle with the flesh (suffer in the flesh)
Live to do the will of God
Romans 7:15–20 ESV
For I do not understand my own actions. For I do not do what I want, but I do the very thing I hate. Now if I do what I do not want, I agree with the law, that it is good. So now it is no longer I who do it, but sin that dwells within me. For I know that nothing good dwells in me, that is, in my flesh. For I have the desire to do what is right, but not the ability to carry it out. For I do not do the good I want, but the evil I do not want is what I keep on doing. Now if I do what I do not want, it is no longer I who do it, but sin that dwells within me.
Ephesians 6:10 ESV
Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might.
E
Live for the LORD
Live to do the will of God
1 Peter 4:2 ESV
so as to live for the rest of the time in the flesh no longer for human passions but for the will of God.
Romans 12:2 ESV
Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.
Romans 12:
Leave your unsaved life in the past
1 Peter 4:3 ESV
For the time that is past suffices for doing what the Gentiles want to do, living in sensuality, passions, drunkenness, orgies, drinking parties, and lawless idolatry.
2 Corinthians 5:14
2 Corinthians 5:14–17 ESV
For the love of Christ controls us, because we have concluded this: that one has died for all, therefore all have died; and he died for all, that those who live might no longer live for themselves but for him who for their sake died and was raised. From now on, therefore, we regard no one according to the flesh. Even though we once regarded Christ according to the flesh, we regard him thus no longer. Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.
Surprise the world with your new self
1 Peter 4:4 ESV
With respect to this they are surprised when you do not join them in the same flood of debauchery, and they malign you;
Live in the Spirit (the way God does) i.e. be like God, be Christ-like
1 Peter 4:5–6 ESV
but they will give account to him who is ready to judge the living and the dead. For this is why the gospel was preached even to those who are dead, that though judged in the flesh the way people are, they might live in the spirit the way God does.
return to Eden
Genesis 1:26–28 ESV
Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. And let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over the livestock and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.” So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them. And God blessed them. And God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it, and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over every living thing that moves on the earth.”
Genesis 1:26-28
Treat your relationship with Christ seriously
1 Peter 4:7 ESV
The end of all things is at hand; therefore be self-controlled and sober-minded for the sake of your prayers.
Have a Sense of urgency- take your relationship with Jesus serious, do not put off being like Christ and growing in Christ
Take God seriously
What would you do if you knew Jesus was coming back tonight?
So be self-controlled- understanding about practical matters and thus be able to act sensibly, to have sound judgement
understanding about practical matters and thus be able to act sensibly
So be sober-minded- be in control of one’s thought processes i.e. what what comes into your spirit
you are a temple of the living God
For the sake of your prayers
So show grace
Above all, Keep loving earnestly (persevering, used of tension of the will)
1 Peter 4:8 ESV
Above all, keep loving one another earnestly, since love covers a multitude of sins.
Serve (show hospitality) without complaining
1 Peter 4:9 ESV
Show hospitality to one another without grumbling.
Serve gracefully (humbly)
1 Peter 4:10 ESV
As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God’s varied grace:
Service of speech- Let what you say be traced back to God’s Word
Service of work- by the strength that God supplies

Conclusion

A king befitting glory!
1 Peter 4:11 ESV
whoever speaks, as one who speaks oracles of God; whoever serves, as one who serves by the strength that God supplies—in order that in everything God may be glorified through Jesus Christ. To him belong glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen.
Psalm 24:8–10 ESV
Who is this King of glory? The Lord, strong and mighty, the Lord, mighty in battle! Lift up your heads, O gates! And lift them up, O ancient doors, that the King of glory may come in. Who is this King of glory? The Lord of hosts, he is the King of glory! Selah
Psalm 34:1–3 ESV
I will bless the Lord at all times; his praise shall continually be in my mouth. My soul makes its boast in the Lord; let the humble hear and be glad. Oh, magnify the Lord with me, and let us exalt his name together!
Psalm 34:1-3
Psalm 34:8 ESV
Oh, taste and see that the Lord is good! Blessed is the man who takes refuge in him!
How to you magnify the LORD?
How do we exalt his name together?
Psalm 34:8 ESV
Oh, taste and see that the Lord is good! Blessed is the man who takes refuge in him!
Matthew 5:14–16 ESV
“You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.
John 1:1–8 ESV
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made. In him was life, and the life was the light of men. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it. There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. He came as a witness, to bear witness about the light, that all might believe through him. He was not the light, but came to bear witness about the light.
John 9:5 ESV
As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world.”
