Introduction
Years ago there was an investment commercial about a company named E.F.
Hutton.
“When E.F.
Hutton speaks, everybody listens.
The point of the commercial was that E.F.
Hutton was so accurate predicting the markets that everybody wanted to hear their investment advice.
They were claiming to have a very good record of helping people make money through investing, but they never claimed 100% accuracy.
Just the fact that they were often right was enough to convince people to listen to them.
That reasoning works fine in the business world, but would you build your life on someone’s word if they told you that their word was often right?
Would you trust that word for the answers to the fundamental questions of life?
Who am I?
Where Did I come from?
What is my purpose in life?
What Happens to me when I die?
Would you trust a word that’s usually right for those kinds of answers?
Let’s go look for a Word that we can trust, let’s see if find a word that we can put our trust in.
The Fact and the Assertion
Deuteronomy 8:
The Fact
To the christian, ‘man shall live by every word that comes from the mouth of the Lord’ is an accepted fact.
Because God is eternal, all knowing, and all powerful it is easy to see that He has the ability to bring to pass whatever He says or to prevent whatever He forbids.
In His perfections, God cannot fail in any way.
So, it makes sense that He cannot lie, He cannot speak in error, and He cannot miscommunicate.
The Assertion
Taken as an assertion, though, there are those in our world that would have great difficulty in accepting this claim.
They would want some further reason to trust this word beyond the simple statement that the things of life are structured and ordered by it.
I’m sure if someone came to with investment advice that they claimed you could always trust, you would have some questions, right?
Range
To whom does this word apply?
How far does its authority reach?
Wherever you live in the world, there are laws; but once you cross the border of that land, those laws are no longer enforceable.
The laws of a land only apply to people in that land.
In other words they are very limited in their range.
The book of Colossians tells us that Christ is the creator of all things and that all things were created for Him.
Everyone is under the authority of His word.
Verse 16 says that He rules over all thrones, all dominions, and all authorities.
Verse 17 says that everything that exists is held together by the power of God’s binding word.
Everything belongs to God, everything glorifies God, and whether it wants to or not, everything does God’s bidding.
That includes every galaxy and star, every angel and person, every rock and speck of dust.
Dr. R.C. Sproul has said, “There are no maverick molecules.”
Not only is God’s word in effect in every land, it’s also in effect in every corner of the universe and it’s binding upon every molecule that God has created.
Endurance
We live in age that has very little respect for the words of wisdom that earlier generations lived by.
In our world, people don’t ask what words mean, they ask, “What does this mean to me?”
Ancient words are interpreted in light of modern understanding and the original meanings and purposes of documents are turned upon their heads.
One needs to look no farther than the way liberals interpret the constitution to see this.
Simple, declarative statements like, “The right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed.”
are softened from being absolute to being malleable and open to the interpretation of the reader.
1 Peter
God’s word does not change meaning over time.
His word is established for all time, and it’s not subject to man’s opinion of what it means or his opinion on what he thinks it should say.
The Character of God’s Word
God’s word is pure.
It contains no error and it never fails to accomplish what God intended for it to.
