Introduction

One of my favorite illustrations is the story of the husband and wife who passed away at the same time and find the beauty of heaven. The husband being an avid golfer is upset with his wife when he is shown the beautiful golf courses in heaven! “If you wouldn’t have fed me all those bran muffins I would have been here 10 years earlier”
Brief review of chapter 6
Eat = 26x’s
Life = 16x’s (Not bios - physical / Zoe - spiritual)
Example: (Jesus is using a metaphor) “You’re so cute I could just eat you or bite you!”
Eating something it becomes a part of you
In Jewish culture the eating of food was related to nutrition (unlike our culture) so they should have understood Jesus’ use of this metaphor.
Old Testament (Those Jesus was speaking to)
Psalm 22:26 NIV
26 The poor will eat and be satisfied; those who seek the Lord will praise him— may your hearts live forever!
Proverbs 22:26 NIV
26 Do not be one who shakes hands in pledge or puts up security for debts;
Psalm 146:7 NIV
7 He upholds the cause of the oppressed and gives food to the hungry. The Lord sets prisoners free,
Proverbs 10:3 NLT
3 The Lord will not let the godly go hungry, but he refuses to satisfy the craving of the wicked.
Psalm 107:9 NIV
9 for he satisfies the thirsty and fills the hungry with good things.
New Testament (To us today)
Matthew 6:31–32 NIV
31 So do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ 32 For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them.
Luke 12:31 NLT
31 Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and he will give you everything you need.

John 6:41 NIV
At this the Jews there began to grumble about him because he said, “I am the bread that came down from heaven.”
John 6:52 NIV
Then the Jews began to argue sharply among themselves, “How can this man give us his flesh to eat?”
John 6:66 NIV
From this time many of his disciples turned back and no longer followed him.
John 6:22–24 NIV
22 The next day the crowd that had stayed on the opposite shore of the lake realized that only one boat had been there, and that Jesus had not entered it with his disciples, but that they had gone away alone. 23 Then some boats from Tiberias landed near the place where the people had eaten the bread after the Lord had given thanks. 24 Once the crowd realized that neither Jesus nor his disciples were there, they got into the boats and went to Capernaum in search of Jesus.

1. Don’t Just Go to Jesus For a Good Meal

“Go to Jesus with your problems, but go to Jesus for more than your problems.” John Lindel
So what if God meets your financial problems if you die and go to Hell. (Marriage, health, etc…)
John 6:25–27 NIV
25 When they found him on the other side of the lake, they asked him, “Rabbi, when did you get here?” 26 Jesus answered, “Very truly I tell you, you are looking for me, not because you saw the signs I performed but because you ate the loaves and had your fill. 27 Do not work for food that spoils, but for food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you. For on him God the Father has placed his seal of approval.”
John 6:25–29 NIV
25 When they found him on the other side of the lake, they asked him, “Rabbi, when did you get here?” 26 Jesus answered, “Very truly I tell you, you are looking for me, not because you saw the signs I performed but because you ate the loaves and had your fill. 27 Do not work for food that spoils, but for food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you. For on him God the Father has placed his seal of approval.” 28 Then they asked him, “What must we do to do the works God requires?” 29 Jesus answered, “The work of God is this: to believe in the one he has sent.”

3. Stop Looking to People and Other Things to Feed Your Soul

John 6:30–40 NIV
30 So they asked him, “What sign then will you give that we may see it and believe you? What will you do? 31 Our ancestors ate the manna in the wilderness; as it is written: ‘He gave them bread from heaven to eat.’” 32 Jesus said to them, “Very truly I tell you, it is not Moses who has given you the bread from heaven, but it is my Father who gives you the true bread from heaven. 33 For the bread of God is the bread that comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.” 34 “Sir,” they said, “always give us this bread.” 35 Then Jesus declared, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty. 36 But as I told you, you have seen me and still you do not believe. 37 All those the Father gives me will come to me, and whoever comes to me I will never drive away. 38 For I have come down from heaven not to do my will but to do the will of him who sent me. 39 And this is the will of him who sent me, that I shall lose none of all those he has given me, but raise them up at the last day. 40 For my Father’s will is that everyone who looks to the Son and believes in him shall have eternal life, and I will raise them up at the last day.”

4. Don’t Allow Others to Ruin Your Appetite

John 6:41–42 NIV
41 At this the Jews there began to grumble about him because he said, “I am the bread that came down from heaven.” 42 They said, “Is this not Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? How can he now say, ‘I came down from heaven’?”
The Jews were so legalistic and shallow in their faith they could not understand this simple yet deep spiritual truth!
Watch the progression when everything is about “We” and “Us”
John 6:28 NIV
28 Then they asked him, “What must we do to do the works God requires?”
John 6:30 NIV
30 So they asked him, “What sign then will you give that we may see it and believe you? What will you do?
John 6:34 NIV
34 “Sir,” they said, “always give us this bread.”
John 6:41 NIV
41 At this the Jews there began to grumble about him because he said, “I am the bread that came down from heaven.”
John 6:52 NIV
52 Then the Jews began to argue sharply among themselves, “How can this man give us his flesh to eat?”
John 6:66 NIV
66 From this time many of his disciples turned back and no longer followed him.

Conclusion

How’s your response to Jesus?
Have you believed in Him?
Romans 10:9 NIV
9 If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.
Is He your Lord?
Luke 14:25–27 NIV
25 Large crowds were traveling with Jesus, and turning to them he said: 26 “If anyone comes to me and does not hate father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters—yes, even their own life—such a person cannot be my disciple. 27 And whoever does not carry their cross and follow me cannot be my disciple.
