Being a Committed Church Member

I. You need to be clean.

This focus on this verse is Holiness.
1 Peter 1:13–16 KJV 1900
13 Wherefore gird up the loins of your mind, be sober, and hope to the end for the grace that is to be brought unto you at the revelation of Jesus Christ; 14 As obedient children, not fashioning yourselves according to the former lusts in your ignorance: 15 But as he which hath called you is holy, so be ye holy in all manner of conversation; 16 Because it is written, Be ye holy; for I am holy.
b. So what does it mean to be holy. We know none us are perfect.
c. The word Holy: Pure, Blameless. We need to do what is right in the eyes of God.
d. Being Holy means we are dedicated to God, morally and spiritually.
f. But how many Christians today really live that kind of life?
Philippians
Philippians 2:15 KJV 1900
15 That ye may be blameless and harmless, the sons of God, without rebuke, in the midst of a crooked and perverse nation, among whom ye shine as lights in the world;
g. We are to live this kind of live (a shining light) so the world, those outside the church will see Jesus through us. If you are living this kind of life outside the church, it will carry over to the church.
h. God plan for you is holiness. But what is it that keeps us for it? SIN.
i. Satan does not what us to be holy. It’s his desire for us to live just like there is not God, to live a life of our own pleasing, not God pleasing.
k. So, there are times when we need to clean up our lives.
VS 22
“Let us draw near with a true heart having our hearts in full assurance of faith”
Philippians 10:22
We are to draw near, stay close to God with a “true heart” That is with a sincere, dedicated heart. Willing to be obedient of God respect.
“having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience”
The sprinkling here is speaking of the sprinkling of blood, a practice of the sprinkling of blood in the tabernacle in the O.T.
Philippians 10:22
a. To sprinkle of blood means to “apply the blood” it means our hearts have been washed by the blood of the Lamb.
“and out bodies washed with pure water”
Not talking about water baptism. Elab on baptism. Death burial and resurrection and new life.
a.
a. Water in the bible is a symbol of the word.
Ephesians 5:26 KJV 1900
26 That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word,
John 15:3 KJV 1900
3 Now ye are clean through the word which I have spoken unto you.
We know we need to keep our lives clean. And this is done by the word of God.
a. Sin will hurt your testimony, it hurts your walk, it hurts your church membership commitment.
b. So, since we are washed by the water of the word being in the word, seeking forgiveness through repentance is what has to be done to get cleaned up.

II. You need to make a commitment.

Hebrews 10:23 KJV 1900
23 Let us hold fast the profession of our faith without wavering; (for he is faithful that promised;)
Hebrews 10:23
Philippians 10:23
The word profession: OG reads “Let us hold fast to the confession of our hope”
a. The focus of this verse is on your commitment or your confession.
Romans 10:9 KJV 1900
9 That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.
In order to be saved you must openly confess Jesus as Lord, as your Lord.
a. So you make your confession in order to be saved. But if you did not surrender you life to Him as your Lord, then you did not get saved.
Luke 18:18–23 KJV 1900
18 And a certain ruler asked him, saying, Good Master, what shall I do to inherit eternal life? 19 And Jesus said unto him, Why callest thou me good? none is good, save one, that is, God. 20 Thou knowest the commandments, Do not commit adultery, Do not kill, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, Honour thy father and thy mother. 21 And he said, All these have I kept from my youth up. 22 Now when Jesus heard these things, he said unto him, Yet lackest thou one thing: sell all that thou hast, and distribute unto the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come, follow me. 23 And when he heard this, he was very sorrowful: for he was very rich.
Luke 18:
He would not commit his life to Jesus.
a. Commitment as a church member is so important.
b. We commit and we hold fast to it. Look at
VS 23 again.
“hold fast without wavering”
Don’t look back, don’t hesitate, stay steadfast to the end.
Philippians 10:23
Philippians 10:23
a. We are to hold fast to our commitment, anchor ourselves to it. An anchor holds firm.
Philippians 10:23
b. Jesus is never wavering in His commitment to us, we should never waver in our commitment to Him.
c. We should have a passion for Jesus and a passion for our church.

III. You must stir up.

III. You need to make an impact others.

Philippians 19:24
Hebrews 10:24 KJV 1900
24 And let us consider one another to provoke unto love and to good works:
Hebrews 10:24 NASB95
24 and let us consider how to stimulate one another to love and good deeds,
The word provoke in to simulate. Every church member that is commited should cause other to do the same.
a. A committed church member will make an impact on others.
c. I’m am not talking about doing things to empress others, because that becomes about self.
VS 24 “To love and good works”
a. First we need to love God, and love one another.
Luke 10:27 KJV 1900
27 And he answering said, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy strength, and with all thy mind; and thy neighbour as thyself.
When others see the love in you, that should stimulate them to love others.
a. When others see your good works, (Elab) that should stimulate them to do the same.
b. We should be impacting others to live more like Jesus.
c. We are love in a way that we love like Jesus did.
b.
d. We are to work in a way that we work like Jesus did.
e. This is another part of being a commited church member.
IV. You need to be here.
Hebrews 10:25 KJV 1900
25 Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching.
Hebrews 10:25 NASB95
25 not forsaking our own assembling together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another; and all the more as you see the day drawing near.
Hebrews 10:25
I’ve heard this: “I can worship from home” Well maybe you can, but God’s word is very clear here.
a. Not forsaking: Also means “Do not neglect to assemble together”
b. Forsake also has a meaning of “abandonment”
c. I know there are times of sickness, work, etc…But how many miss church because of an excuse?
d. When forsaking church, you are neglecting. What? Your calling, your commitment, the love of Jesus, worship.
e. When forsaking church you are abandoning. What? Your brothers and sisters in Christ.
f. We are in a battle, don’t forsake one another on the battle field.
“as the manner of some”
NASB “As is the habit of some”
g. Some habits are hard to break.
h. Besides worshipping God what other reason should you be here.
“but exhorting one another” (encouraging)
We have to encourage one another, that is to build up one another, not tear one another down.
a. If someone is sick, encourage them by praying for them.
b. If you know someone has done something here at church thank them.
c. If someone hasn’t been here in a while, call them.
Conclusion: Are you willing to do your part? Are you willing to be committed?
