Introduction
This chapter alone is one of the most talked about chapters in the Bible.
Pentecost.
What does it mean?
What does it signify?
Are we missing something that was present in those days?
Are we experiencing God in a different way today?
I know all of these things can be confusing and I credit a lot of that to a misinterpretation of the Holy Spirit and failing in educating our church on the role of the Holy Spirit .
There is a lot of false doctrine in regards to pentecost and one important thing to know is that Pentecost was indeed a promise fulfilled.
This was the fiftieth day after passover.
It was one of the rare feasts where people would make their pilgramage to Jerusalem.
This may have been why God decided to pour the Holy Spirit out was because so many people would have been there.
Another reason and one I want to drive home was because of the meaning is that the old testament term for Pentecost was the feast of harvests and we are going to read tonight about the greatest harvest ever.
The Holy Spirit has come to produce a harvest.
Lets read together
When you place your faith in Jesus Christ and become regenerate, I believe, you immediately become indwelled with the Holy Spirit.
Was what happened here at Pentecost the same as that indwelling?
No.
These apostles were regenerate by faith already.
They were believers.
This pouring out of the Holy Spirit was a sudden and visible action that happened.
The Holy Spirit is on His own timing. The Holy Spirit does this in his own timing in order to bring people to God.
It isn't about us or our timing.
There isn't a formula or something you can do to just make the Spirit fall.
This is a misconception of the Holy Spirits purpose and what happened at pentecost.
1 When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place.
2 Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting.
3 They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them.
4 All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them.
5 Now there were staying in Jerusalem God-fearing Jews from every nation under heaven.
6 When they heard this sound, a crowd came together in bewilderment, because each one heard their own language being spoken.
7 Utterly amazed, they asked: “Aren’t all these who are speaking Galileans?
8 Then how is it that each of us hears them in our native language?
9 Parthians, Medes and Elamites; residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, 10 Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya near Cyrene; visitors from Rome 11 (both Jews and converts to Judaism); Cretans and Arabs—we hear them declaring the wonders of God in our own tongues!” 12 Amazed and perplexed, they asked one another, “What does this mean?” 13 Some, however, made fun of them and said, “They have had too much wine.”
The Holy Spirit does this in his own timing in order to bring people to God.
It isn't about us or our timing.
There isn't a formula or something you can do to just make the Spirit fall.
This is a misconception of the Holy Spirits purpose and what happened at pentecost.
Another mistake, A LARGE ONE, that happens here and in a few other places in scriptures is this idea of tongues.
I bet I could go through this one and get 40 different understanding and teachings on what the gift of tongues is and what it isnt.
There are some that believe you can t be saved without it.
Wrong.
Some that believe it is a mumbled language that makes no sense to anyone.
Some believe it is a secret prayer language.
I want to focus on what I know.
There are things we can speculate on in scripture and that is good in its place but I want to teach what I know.
This passage has a lot more to do with the Holy Spirit and the harvest than it has to do with tongues.
This speaking was needed to reach the gentiles and to spread the gospel.
It was a tool or a gift.
But here me when I say this.
We need to focus on the giver, not the gift.
Example of wrong tool and wrong time
Then look what happens when people begin to focus on the gift, They miss out.
They said they must be drunk and they didnt understand.
They began to miss out.
Lets keep reading
So Peter begins his first sermon to the crowd before all the Jews and gentiles who have just seen this massive outpouring of the Holy Spirit.
Peter begins with Scripture.
He shares the words of the prophet Joel that pointed to this day of pentecost.
Isnt it amazing to see Scripture answering scripture.
You know what that does?
It shows us that God is always faithful to His Word.
