Isaiah 53:1–6 NKJV
1 Who has believed our report? And to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed? 2 For He shall grow up before Him as a tender plant, And as a root out of dry ground. He has no form or comeliness; And when we see Him, There is no beauty that we should desire Him. 3 He is despised and rejected by men, A Man of sorrows and acquainted with grief. And we hid, as it were, our faces from Him; He was despised, and we did not esteem Him. 4 Surely He has borne our griefs And carried our sorrows; Yet we esteemed Him stricken, Smitten by God, and afflicted. 5 But He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities; The chastisement for our peace was upon Him, And by His stripes we are healed. 6 All we like sheep have gone astray; We have turned, every one, to his own way; And the Lord has laid on Him the iniquity of us all.
2 For he shall grow up before him as a tender plant, and as a root out of a dry ground: he hath no form nor comeliness; and when we shall see him, there is no beauty that we should desire him.
3 He is despised and rejected of men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief: and we hid as it were our faces from him; he was despised, and we esteemed him not.
4 Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted.
5 But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities:
the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed.
6 All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the Lord hath laid on him the iniquity of us all
He was Wounded for our Transgression and Bruised for our Iniquities
Over 1.5 million men and women have been wounded serving this great country we live.
Many of those wounds were life changing events.
And it is because of these men and women, we have freedom to gather today and worship.
And thank God for the freedom we have.
I enjoy coming to church on Sundays and Wednesdays and being able to lift my hands and worship in liberty.
I like being able to come to church and fellowship with people of like precious faith.
And as great as our freedom is; nothing compares to the freedom that we have in Christ Jesus.
He was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities:
Over 1.5 million wounded for our freedom;
But only one was wounded for the redemption of man.
Only one was righteous enough;
Only one was pure enough
Jesus Christ suffered and died for the redemption of man.
And Approximately 700 years prior to the birth of Jesus,
the prophet Isaiah spoke of this suffering:
He said; there would be one that would be despised and rejected.
One that would bare our griefs and carry our sorrows.
He would be wounded for our transgression and bruised for our iniquities.
Today; you made a decision to come to an Assembly of God Church,
In the Assemblies of God, we hold fast to 16 fundamental Truths.
And the very first fundamental truth is that
“The bible is the “divinely inspired” word of God”
it is “the revelation of “God to man”,
It’s the infallible, authoritative rule of faith and our conduct.
And the reason I am telling you this; is we need to understand,
that what is written 700 years before it ever came to be: Is not a fairy tale.
It is the authoritative word of God spoken to man.
700 years before the birth of Jesus;
God had revealed to the prophet Isaiah:
that there would be a savior that would come on the scene,
and He would be wounded for our transgression,
He would be bruised for our iniquities,
“Transgression” and “iniquities” are our sins;
From the fall of Adam and Eve in the Garden; man has been separated from God.
It was a perfect relationship that was broken because of disobedience,
And the result of that disobedience is; that you and I were born into sin and in need a savior,
And the only way for that “broken relationship” to be restored was by the shedding of blood.
The words penned in , would take nearly 700 years to come to pass.
but Today I want to go back in time and share this event as it unfolds;
I want to preach on the subject:

He Was Wounded for Our Transgressions and Bruised for Our Iniquities

Two thousand years ago there we no computers, there were no cell phones,
There was no way to communicate like “we can” with modern day technology,
The medical science was not advanced like today’s medicine.
When they faced a crisis, they didn’t have a means to seek help as we do,
When we get sick we go to the doctor or to the emergency room.
But 2000 years ago it was not so.
I want you to picture in your mind;
Gabriel: an angel of the Lord appearing to a young virgin who was engaged; and telling her that she would conceive in her womb, and bring forth a son.
This little virgin girl question the angel and asked: how can this be; I know not a man.
The thoughts she must have had;
Thoughts about:
-what people were going to think of her,
-How they wouldn’t believe her or how her “husband to be” would react,
Modern day medical equipment would have been able to prove she was still a virgin;
but all Mary had was her word.
And as I am reading this and studying it out;
I wondered if perhaps; Mary had read the writings of the Prophet Isaiah from 700 years earlier
I wandered If she had read the story of Isaiah talking about a man being born for our griefs,
A man that would be born of a virgin
A man that would carry out our sorrows,
A man that would be wounded for our transgression, bruised for our iniquities.
Did Mary know that her child; would be the one that Isaiah was talking about?
700 years had passed and the prophecy had not been fulfilled,
Was this it?
Was this “virgin girl” carrying the one who would be wounded for our transgression?
Was she going to bear the one that would be bruised for our iniquities?
Now remember, we agree that the bible is the infallible word of God.
That means; everything within its context is true, it has happened or it will happen.
You might would say how can this be?
How can a man know of an event that would take place 700 years later?
I believe It’s because God desires a relationship with His people.
And Isaiah; was willing to draw near to God and listen to what God was telling him.
Isaiah never saw this event unfold;
but he drew near to God; and God drew near to Him and God revealed His to plan to Isaiah.
Gods plan for a broken relationship with His people to be restored.
I’m not quite sure if Mary understood in full what would take place.
But the child she was carrying; was a word that was spoken 700 years earlier that was coming to light.
Isaiah said; He was wounded for our transgression;
He was bruised for our iniquities;
Transgression means the violation of Gods law.
Iniquities means; sin and wickedness.
Have you ever seen such a day when men are violating the law of God.
Just in the 10 commandments alone.
I am the Lord thy God. Thou shalt not have other gods before me.
Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain
Remember to keep the Sabbath Day.
Honor thy Father and thy Mother.
Thou shalt not kill.
Thou shalt not commit adultery.
Thou shalt not steal.
Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbor.
Thou shalt not covet thy neighbor's wife.
10. Thou shalt not covet thy neighbor's goods.
I wander today:
if there are any in the house that have violated God’s Word.
I wander are there any in the house that have sinned,
I don’t have to wander very long.
This house is filled with violators and sinners,
You and I needed a savior,
We are a people that are lost and undone.
I know some of you think you got it all together and you got this thing all figured out.
But those that will be honest and real with yourself.
You realize; that your are lost and undone
you realize that your very best is as a filthy rag.
you realize that you are in need of a savior.
you realize that you can't do this on your own,
no matter how hard you try
no matter how much you come to church.
without the Lord you will fall flat on your face every time.
Just when I think I’m doing good and I got this all figured out.
The enemy shows up and let me know real quick: that I need the Lord
I need His presence in my life.
Just because you know when to say amen
Just because you know the routine;
Being churched don't make you saved
There's a lot of churched folks dying and going to a hell.
They are a lot of churched folks that know the church language;
But I'm afraid when it comes their time to stand before The Lord; lots of folks will be shocked
I dont care if you come to church every time the doors are open and your grandma speaks in tongues.
If you are not washed in the blood it don't matter how much of the church life you know.
two thousand years ago the plan of salvation begins to unfold right before a little virgin girl eyes
She has a little baby boy in a manger underneath the open skies just outside a little town call Bethlehem,
She gives Him the name Jesus.
and He grows to be a man.
He begins to teach and preach in the temple,
He begins to heal the sick, the blind, the deaf, the lame,
He even raises the dead.
Miracle after miracle, and healing after healing;
Then the chief priest and the scribes begin to question Him; asking Him by what authority do you do these things.
And later they plot to kill Him.
Jesus understands what His mission on earth was,
He knew that the words that Isaiah spoke 700 years earlier were about Him
and we find Jesus praying in the garden, asking God; if there was another way,
God is there any other way we can do this.
Jesus had lived a sinless life,
He had never known sin, and He knew that He would have to take on the sin of the world.
This is the reason He prayed in the Garden; until His sweat became as great drops of blood.
Not because of the pain and suffering in the flesh, but the sin He would take upon his shoulders.
My sin, your sin, the sin of the world.
Every sin you and I have committed, every sin from the beginning of time would rest upon His shoulders.
He was betrayed by one of His own disciples.
and they arrested Him and lead Him away to be crucified.
He was brought before Pilate, where he was released to be crucified,
It is at this point that Jesus suffers a severe physical beating.
He is flogged;
Jesus was tied to a post, leaving his back entirely exposed.
The Romans used a whip, which consisted of small pieces of bone and metal attached to a number of leather strands.
The number of strikes is not recorded in the gospels, however; according to customs, it is believed that He was struck 39 times.
His skin was stripped from the back,
He Lost Extreme amounts of blood
(The soldiers) stripped him and put a scarlet robe on him and then twisted together a crown of thorns and forced it on his head violently
They spit on him, and took a staff and struck him on the head again and again.
every blow driving the thorns into the scalp and forehead, causing severe bleeding.
The severity of the beating is not detailed in the gospels.
but according to Isaiah; there was no beauty that we should desire him
People were appalled to look at Him.
From the beating, Jesus walked on a path, now known as the Via Dolorosa or the "way of suffering", to be crucified at Golgotha.
On a narrow street of stone, surrounded by markets.
He was led through the crowded streets carrying the cross on His shoulders.
The cross was estimated to weigh between 80 to 110 pounds.
Down the Via Dolorosa to the top of Galgotha, the place of skull.
There they nailed his hands and his feet to the cross, then stood the cross for Jesus to be crucified,
Having suffered from the beatings and flogging,
Having suffered from severe loss of blood and dehydration and loss of His strength.
When the cross was erected upright, there was a tremendous strain put on His wrists, arms and shoulders,
His arms, being held up and outward, made it extremely difficult to exhale, and impossible to take a full breath.
Jesus was only able to take very shallow breaths.
As time passed, from the loss of blood, and oxygen His muscles suffered severe cramping and contraction.
but the worse was still yet to come;
I don’t know where you are tonight.
are you living in sin
has sin separated you from God;
I don’t know where you at?
But I do know:
Jesus was wounded and bruised,
He suffered more than you and I could imagine,
But nothing could compare to what He was about to experience.
You got to understand: Jesus had never known sin,
He never knew what it was like to be separated from God.
He never knew what it meant to have a broken relationship with the Father,
But around the ninth hour the bible tells us that Jesus; cried with a loud voice saying:
My God, My God, why have you forsaken me.
It was at that moment; Jesus experienced separation from the Father.
It was at that moment : Jesus took on the sin of the world.
Every sin you and I every committed rested on His shoulders
It was at that moment Jesus experienced a broken relationship.
The bible tells us that Jesus died, He gave up the Ghost,
A man that had never known any sin, had experienced the darkness of every sin in one moment,
The hurts and pains of this world.
Every hurt, every pain, in one moment.
He had prayed earlier: Father, if there be any other way, take this cup from me.
My friend there was no other way, Jesus was the only way,
Jesus is the only way
You must be born again in order to enter in the kingdom of heaven
Your righteousness will not get you to heaven,
Your works will not get you to heaven,
You not sinning; will not get you to heaven.
Your momma and daddy can’t get you to heaven.
Your grandma and your grandpa, cant get you into heaven,
Your education, your popularity, your money, your good looks,
There is only one way.
He was wounded for our transgression, he was bruised for our iniquities.
