August 26 SONG OF PREPARATION Speak, Oh Lord Speak, O Lord, as we come to you to receive the food of your holy word. Take your truth, plant it deep in us; shape and fashion us in your likeness, that the light of Christ might be seen today in our acts of love and our deeds of faith. Speak, O Lord, and fulfill in us all your purposes for your glory. Teach us, Lord, full obedience, holy reverence, true humility; test our thoughts and our attitudes in the radiance of your purity. Cause our faith to rise; cause our eyes to see your majestic love and authority. Words of pow’r that can never fail— let their truth prevail over unbelief. Speak, O Lord, and renew our minds; help us grasp the heights of your plans for us— truths unchanged from the dawn of time that will echo down through eternity. And by grace we’ll stand on your promises, and by faith we’ll walk as you walk with us. Speak, O Lord, till your church is built and the earth is filled with your glory. CALL TO WORSHIP Leader: All: Leader: All: I will extol you, my God and King, and bless your name forever and ever. Great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised, and his greatness is unsearchable. All your works shall give thanks to you, O LORD, and all your saints shall bless you! We announce the glory of your kingdom and tell of your power, to make your mighty deeds known, and the glorious splendor of your kingdom. Your kingdom is an everlasting kingdom, and your dominion endures throughout all generations. PRAYER OF INVOCATION SONGS OF PRAISE This is My Father’s World This is my Father’s world, and to my list’ning ears; all nature sings and round me rings the music of the spheres. This is my Father’s world: I rest me in the thoughtof rocks and trees, of skies and seas, his hand the wonders wrought. This is my Father’s world; the birds their carols raise; the morning light, the lily white, declare their maker’s praise. This is my Father’s world: he shines in all that’s fairin the rustling grass I hear him pass, he speaks to me everywhere. This is my Father’s world, O let me ne’er forget; that though the wrong seems oft so strong, God is the ruler yet. This is my Father’s world: the battle is not doneJesus who died shall be satisfied, and earth and heav’n be one! King Of Heaven Jesus, let your kingdom come here, let your will be done here – in us. Jesus, there is no one greater, you alone are Savior, show the world your love. King of heaven, come down, King of heaven, come now, let your glory reign, shining like the day, King of heaven, come. King of heaven, rise up, who can stand against us, you are strong to save, in your mighty name, King of heaven, come. We are children of your mercy, rescued for your glory – we cry; Jesus, set our hearts towards you, that every eye would see you – lifted high. King of Heaven, come. King of heaven, come. 2 CALL TO CONFESSION CONFESSION OF SIN Oh, what joy for those whose disobedience has been forgiven, whose sin is put out of sight! Yes, what joy for those whose record the Lord has cleared of guilt, whose lives are lived in complete honesty! When I refused to confess my sin, my body wasted away, and I groaned all day long. Day and night your hand of discipline was heavy on me. Finally, I confessed all my sin to you and stopped trying to hide my guilt. I said to myself, “I will confess my rebellion to the Lord.” Silent Confession of Sins ASSURANCE OF PARDON You forgave me! All my guilt is gone! Leader: All: We praise you, O Lord, for the gift of forgiveness. Receive our gifts offered in gratitude for your grace. 3 WE OFFER OUR GIFTS Entrance There you were hanging, transforming the pain into entrance into your heart. Before we could come in, you had to destroy within the dark that kept us apart. Before we had heard of you, but had no concern for you darkness was all around. The wall was so high, no way to get by but then you tore it all down. We crossed the threshold and death lost his control as the sun rose in our hearts. We felt the warm embrace, of your sovereign grace now, every day we can start. To live and love with you, follow and worship you with songs that flow from our soul. Filled with the light of you, as we are led by you longing with joy to be home. Jesus come, take our hand. Lead us into the promise land. He said to the woman, “Did God actually say, ‘You shall not eat of any tree in the garden’?” 2 And the woman said to the serpent, “We may eat of the fruit of the trees in the garden, 3 but God said, ‘You shall not eat of the fruit of the tree that is in the midst of the garden, neither shall you touch it, lest you die.’” 4 But the serpent said to the woman, “You will not surely die. 5 For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.” 6 So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was to be desired to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate, and she also gave some to her husband who was with her, and he ate. 7 Then the eyes of both were opened, and they knew that they were naked. And they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves loincloths. 8 And they heard the sound of Yahweh God walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and the man and his wife hid themselves from the presence of Yahweh God among the trees of the garden. 9 But Yahweh God called to the man and said to him, “Where are you?” 10 And he said, “I heard the sound of you in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked, and I hid myself.” 11 He said, “Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten of the tree of which I commanded you not to eat?” 12 The man said, “The woman whom you gave to be with me, she gave me fruit of the tree, and I ate.” 13 Then Yahweh God said to the woman, “What is this that you have done?” The woman said, “The serpent deceived me, and I ate.” 1 5 Yahweh God said to the serpent, “Because you have done this, cursed are you above all livestock and above all beasts of the field; on your belly you shall go, and dust you shall eat all the days of your life. 15 I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and her offspring; he shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise his heel.” 14 To the woman he said, “I will surely multiply your pain in childbearing; in pain you shall bring forth children. Your desire shall be for your husband, but he shall rule over you.” 16 And to Adam he said, “Because you have listened to the voice of your wife and have eaten of the tree of which I commanded you, ‘You shall not eat of it,’ cursed is the ground because of you; in pain you shall eat of it all the days of your life; 18 thorns and thistles it shall bring forth for you; and you shall eat the plants of the field. 19 By the sweat of your face you shall eat bread, till you return to the ground, for out of it you were taken; for you are dust, and to dust you shall return.” 17 NEW TESTAMENT LESSON Romans 16:20; 25-27 The God of peace will soon crush Satan under your feet. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you. 20 Now to him who is able to strengthen you according to my gospel and the preaching of Jesus Christ, according to the revelation of the mystery that was kept secret for long ages 26 but has now been disclosed and through the prophetic writings has been made known to all nations, according to the command of the eternal God, to bring about the obedience of faith— 27 to the only wise God be glory forevermore through Jesus Christ! Amen. 25 Leader: All: This is the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. SERMON John Tomberlin 6 SONG OF RESPONSE Come Ye Sinners Come, ye sinners, poor and needy, weak and wounded, sick and sore; Jesus ready stands to save you, full of pity, love and pow’r. He is able, he is able, he is willing; doubt no more. He is able, he is able, he is willing; doubt no more. Come, ye thirsty, come and welcome, God’s free bounty glorify; true belief and true repentance, every grace that brings you nigh. Without money, without money, come to Jesus Christ and buy. Without money, without money, come to Jesus Christ and buy. Come, ye weary, heavy laden, lost & ruined by the fall; if you tarry till you’re better, you will never come at all. Not the righteous, not the righteous, sinners Jesus came to call. Not the righteous, not the righteous, sinners Jesus came to call. Let not conscience make you linger, nor of fitness fondly dream; all the fitness he requireth is to feel your need of him. This he gives you, this he gives you, 'tis the Spirit's rising beam. This he gives you, this he gives you, 'tis the Spirit's rising beam. Lo! The incarnate God, ascended, pleads the merit of his blood. Venture on him, venture wholly, let no other trust intrude. None but Jesus, none but Jesus can do helpless sinners good. None but Jesus, none but Jesus can do helpless sinners good.
