Song: Trust and obey

We can trust God, but that is not enough, we have to obey God.

“Trust and obey are the feet upon which we should walk, the hands in which we should reach out and receive, not only the gift of salvation, but the exceeding great and precious promise which God offers to us in Jesus Christ”

“now as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence”

It seems here that Paul realized that the Philippian believers had been leaning on him, looking for direction, and encouragement, and now He was not with them and they were looking to Jesus.

a. Paul was not with them, they could not see him, they could not hear his voice.

He wanted then to relay on Jesus.

There is nothing wrong with leaning on another Christians.

We are to bear one another burdens.

But Jesus is the best one to lean on.

No matter what we are going through Jesus is always there for us.

“work out our own salvation”

He did not say work out your own new birth.

He did not say work out your own redemption.

He did not say, work out your own forgiveness of sin.

For us to work out our own salvation, we must first posses that great salvation.

Salvation is of the Lord through his grave and power.

The reason the Philippian believers were to work out their own salvation was that God was working in them.

a. Worketh: means to work effectually; our English word; energy.

It is God energizing you.

VS 12-13 tie together responsibility and divine sovereignty.

Before salvation, God worked on you, now God works in you.

It is the spirit who enables you live in Christ.

c. Jesus in actively within every Christian that is surrendered to Him, that lets Him work in them.

The believer had to respond to the working of God in his life if he is going to express characteristic that glorify God.

“both to will and to do His good pleasure”

God gives the will and He energizes the work.

As a result of God’s work within us, there is a desire for us to let God do His work.

If we do not desire to do the work of God, we have not allowed the spirit of God to move in us.

When the spirit of God has full rein in us, He can work in us to us to desire and to do what is His will and His propose.

He energies you will.

He mobilizes your doing.

Ephesians

Philippians 2:

“Do all things”

a. Grumbling, complaining, muttering.

b. “The person who is characterized by a complaining attitude is not properly expressing the salvation he possess; therefore, he is not attracting unbelievers to Christ”

Without arguing.

Normally, where there is grumbling, arguing will follow.

This will cause a believer from being the kind of witness he needs to be.

Philippians 2:15

Blameless: The world is watching us.

Unbelievers should not be able to point a finger of accusation at the believer.

None of us are perfect, so we have to have the responsibility to face up to our wrong doings we have committed against each other.

Harmless: Pure, innocent: the believer is not tot have mixed motives in what he does.

He is not to connive to get his way.

VS 15 b

“shine as lights”

Stars light up the sky and they show Gods glory.

We as believers, our light should shine to show Gods glory.

Matthew 5:15-16

We are not commanded to shine, rather he stated that we are shining.

It may not be as bright as it ought to be, but it’s shining.

a. Sin will dim a believers light and prevent the reflection of God’s glory through us.

We can only shine as we alone Him to shine.

“Holding forth (fast) the the word of life”

a. Hold forth refers to believers holding out or offering something for others to take: as one would offer for or a gift to someone.

Elab on what believers have to offer.

As Christians we study to word, and apply it to our lives in our daily lives and we are to share it.

Philippians 2:

“Being poured out”

The drink offering refers to the topping off of an animal sacrifice.

Wine was poured into the burning animal and the wine would vaporize.

The steam symbolized the rising of the offering to the God.

a. Paul offered his life as a drink offering, and saw the Philippians as priest who were offering their lives sacrificially and faithfully to God.
