In Paul’s sermon, we see the Gospel and the fulfillment of God’s promise through Jesus Christ.
We see:
God’s love for us.
Man’s sinful nature.
God’s ongoing blessings.
Man’s continued rejection of God’s provision.
The separation that our sin creates between us and our Creator.
The prophecy of a Messiah come to be through Jesus.
The Son of God, sent by God, for the will and the Kingdom of God.
Jesus was sent for all who would listen and believe.
A perfect Jesus who lived a sinless life.
Jesus giving His life willingly, a final sacrifice for the sins of all men.
Victory over death and all things that would separate us from Him.
Sufficiency of Christ, there is no other and He is enough.
The urgency of the Gospel.
It is because of God’s love for us and because of the sacrifice of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of our sins that we administer the ordinance of The Lord’s Supper.
It portrays the atoning sacrifice of our Savior for you and I.
But Paul warns us about how we receive the bread and the cup.
1 Corinthians 11:26-
Paul’s warning is for the division in the church of Corinth.
A church that shares in the Lord’s Supper should be united under Christ for the glory and kingdom of God.
When we take of the bread and the cup, we are proclaiming that we believe in the death and resurrection of Jesus!
We need to understand that the Lord’s Supper is not for those that are worthy.
For none of us is worthy of God’s mercies.
Without Him, we are lost, undone, weak and unworthy of any of His blessings.
It is because we are unworthy that Jesus came to seek and to save.
And it is because of the hope and salvation in Him, that we share in this holy ordinance.
No one among us is worthy of the love and suffering of Christ Jesus.
But scripture makes it clear that we must take it in a worthy manner.
We must look at ourselves and judge ourselves honestly.
We must examine our motives, examine our hearts, make sure there is no dissension with other believers, be sure to not have any unconfessed sin, to take the supper solemnly and rightly understand that it represents the sacrifice of Christ.
Invitation:
We will take a few minutes for response, self reflection and prayer.
Invitation
Prayer
We are guests at your table....we are unworthy.....as we gather, may we remember why He died.....Your love and grace and righteousness....forgiveness, hope, eternal life.....As we take the bread and cup, may your Spirit fill us and strengthen us until we are called home.
Communion
Administer the bread.
Please hold your portion until everyone is served.
The body of our Lord Jesus Christ, which is given for us.
Let us eat together.
Administer the cups.
Please hold your cup until everyone is served.
1 Corinthians 11:
The blood of our Lord Jesus Christ, through which we have the forgiveness of sins.
Let us drink together.
In Matthew’s telling of the Lord’s Supper, Jesus says these words:
We can look forward to the day when we drink the new wine in our Father’s Kingdom with Him.
We will dismiss today in the same manner that they did.
Will you stand with us as we sing.
