ntroduction?

2 Peter 3:9 KJV 1900
9 The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.
Ill.
On Thursday visitation with the Tottens.
Mrs. Totten was discussing some of the churches in the area....she stated “It seems they just want to play and have fun.” I informed her concerning the difference of our class and church. I stated, “We are still preaching the old story and going after the souls of men.”
Consider what some of the great Christian leaders of the past have said.
Dodderidge: “I Long for the conversion of souls more sensibly than anything besides; Me thinks I could not only labor, but die for it with delight.”
Matthew Henry: “I would think it greater happiness to win one soul to Christ, than to gain mountains of gold and silver for myself.”
Holland Beck: “Oh the possibilities of this holy passion; It will sweep away selfishness; It will swallow up indifference and push aside strife; It will lift our service out of the commonplace; It will cause the lifeless machinery of and in the church to move with power.
Spurgeon: The chief business of the Christian; The most royal employment.”
John Wesley: “We have nothing to do but win souls.”
L. R. Scarborough: “The refusal to witness of the saving gospel to a lost world day by day is nothing short of high treason, spritual rebellion, and inexcusible disobedience to God’s holy command.”
The greatest men and women of past ages have been those who have longed for and sought after the the conversion of the souls of men.
Poem: Our Commission
Give us a watchword for the hour,
A thrilling word, a word of power;
A battle cry, a flaming breath,
A call to conquest or to death;
A word to rouse the church from rest,
To heed the Master’s high behest.
The call is given, ye hosts arise,
The watchword is EVANGELIZE!
To fallen men, a dying race,
Make known the gift of gospel grace.
The word that now in darkness lies,
O church of Christ, EVANGELIZE
I. It’s Importance
A. God’s supreme desire is that humanity be saved
2 Peter 3:9 KJV 1900
9 The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.
God pleads with Israel
Ezekiel 18:4 KJV 1900
4 Behold, all souls are mine; as the soul of the father, so also the soul of the son is mine: the soul that sinneth, it shall die.
Ezekiel 18:20 KJV 1900
20 The soul that sinneth, it shall die. The son shall not bear the iniquity of the father, neither shall the father bear the iniquity of the son: the righteousness of the righteous shall be upon him, and the wickedness of the wicked shall be upon him.
Ezekiel 18:23 KJV 1900
23 Have I any pleasure at all that the wicked should die? saith the Lord God: and not that he should return from his ways, and live?
Ezekiel 18:32 KJV 1900
32 For I have no pleasure in the death of him that dieth, saith the Lord God: wherefore turn yourselves, and live ye.
Ezekiel 33:11 KJV 1900
11 Say unto them, As I live, saith the Lord God, I have no pleasure in the death of the wicked; but that the wicked turn from his way and live: turn ye, turn ye from your evil ways; for why will ye die, O house of Israel?
Ezekiel 33:11
God Strives with The Ante-Diluvian Age
Genesis 6:3 KJV 1900
3 And the Lord said, My spirit shall not always strive with man, for that he also is flesh: yet his days shall be an hundred and twenty years.
God searches and calls for Adam
Genesis 3:8–9 KJV 1900
8 And they heard the voice of the Lord God walking in the garden in the cool of the day: and Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the Lord God amongst the trees of the garden. 9 And the Lord God called unto Adam, and said unto him, Where art thou?
From that day in the Garden until today God has been seeking the souls of men!
B. Jesus Christ’s entire earthly ministry was consumed with reaching and saving sinners - For this cause he was born, lived, died, was buried, rose again and ascended on high. For this cause he lives, he ever liveth to make intercession.
Matthew 18:11 KJV 1900
11 For the Son of man is come to save that which was lost.
Luke 9:
Luke 9:56 KJV 1900
56 For the Son of man is not come to destroy men’s lives, but to save them. And they went to another village.
John 3:17 KJV 1900
17 For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.
1 Timothy 1:15 KJV 1900
15 This is a faithful saying, and worthy of all acceptation, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners; of whom I am chief.
C. The Great Soulwinning campaigns of history began when one person led another person to Christ
Andrew Found Peter - Peter preaches to the Thousands
Kimball found Moody - Moody shook two continents for God
Harry Monroe Found Sunday - Billy held 300 crusades, spoke to over 100 million people and led more that 1 million to Christ.
II. It’s Motivation - I think of motivation in terms of Reasons and Rewards
II. It’s Motivation - I think of motivation in terms of Reasons and Rewards
A. Reason’s For Soulwinning - See former Sunday School lesson - “Motives For Soulwinning”
I believe that people (Potentially) work better when they have a reason for what they do. Nothing can inspire a person more than noble goal or a holy purpose. Allow me to give you some ideas that I trust will motivate you.
Sinners are perishing - (song rescue the perishing)
Rescue the perishing,   Care for the dying, Snatch them in pity from sin and the grave;   Weep o’er the erring one,   Lift up the fallen, Tell them of Jesus the mighty to save. Rescue the perishing,   Care for the dying; Jesus is merciful,     Jesus will save.
Though they are slighting Him,   Still He is waiting, Waiting the penitent child to receive;   Plead with them earnestly,   Plead with them gently; He will forgive if they only believe.
Though they are slighting Him,   Still He is waiting, Waiting the penitent child to receive;   Plead with them earnestly,   Plead with them gently; He will forgive if they only believe.
Down in the human heart,   Crushed by the tempter, Feelings lie buried that grace can restore;   Touched by a loving heart,   Wakened by kindness, Chords that are broken will vibrate once more.
Down in the human heart,   Crushed by the tempter, Feelings lie buried that grace can restore;   Touched by a loving heart,   Wakened by kindness, Chords that are broken will vibrate once more.
Rescue the perishing,   Duty demands it; Strength for thy labor the Lord will provide;   Back to the narrow way,   Patiently win them; Tell the poor wand’rer a Savior has died.
Nations go to hell
Psalm 9:17 KJV 1900
17 The wicked shall be turned into hell, And all the nations that forget God.
Cities go to Hell
Genesis 15:13–14 KJV 1900
13 And he said unto Abram, Know of a surety that thy seed shall be a stranger in a land that is not theirs, and shall serve them; and they shall afflict them four hundred years; 14 And also that nation, whom they shall serve, will I judge: and afterward shall they come out with great substance.
Genesis 15:
Genesis 19:24–25 KJV 1900
24 Then the Lord rained upon Sodom and upon Gomorrah brimstone and fire from the Lord out of heaven; 25 And he overthrew those cities, and all the plain, and all the inhabitants of the cities, and that which grew upon the ground.
Genesis 19:
Matthew 11:20–24 KJV 1900
20 Then began he to upbraid the cities wherein most of his mighty works were done, because they repented not: 21 Woe unto thee, Chorazin! woe unto thee, Bethsaida! for if the mighty works, which were done in you, had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes. 22 But I say unto you, It shall be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon at the day of judgment, than for you. 23 And thou, Capernaum, which art exalted unto heaven, shalt be brought down to hell: for if the mighty works, which have been done in thee, had been done in Sodom, it would have remained until this day. 24 But I say unto you, That it shall be more tolerable for the land of Sodom in the day of judgment, than for thee.
Matthew 11:
Families go to hell
Numbers 16:
Numbers 16:31–33 KJV 1900
31 And it came to pass, as he had made an end of speaking all these words, that the ground clave asunder that was under them: 32 And the earth opened her mouth, and swallowed them up, and their houses, and all the men that appertained unto Korah, and all their goods. 33 They, and all that appertained to them, went down alive into the pit, and the earth closed upon them: and they perished from among the congregation.
Individuals go to hell
Luke 16:22–23 KJV 1900
22 And it came to pass, that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels into Abraham’s bosom: the rich man also died, and was buried; 23 And in hell he lift up his eyes, being in torments, and seeth Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom.
Luke 16:
It is not incredibly stirring when we think about nations going to hell, but what about mom, brother, daughter, son, dad, friend, co worker.
Nations in hell beg America not to come there. Cities in Hell beg Summerville not to come there. Families in hell beg families not to come there. Individuals in hell beg you not to come there.
Love is constraining
Rescue the perishing,   Duty demands it; Strength for thy labor the Lord will provide;   Back to the narrow way,   Patiently win them; Tell the poor wand’rer a Savior has died.
2 Corinthians 5:14 KJV 1900
14 For the love of Christ constraineth us; because we thus judge, that if one died for all, then were all dead:
II Corinthians
Not our love....It is often shallow, superficial, short-lived and selfish.
It is Christ’s love that motivates us
Romans 5:5 KJV 1900
5 And hope maketh not ashamed; because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us.
It was God’s love that motivated him
John 3:16 KJV 1900
16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
It was Christ’s Love that motivated Him
John 15:3 KJV 1900
3 Now ye are clean through the word which I have spoken unto you.
John 15:13 KJV 1900
13 Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.
You may say, “but I don’t feel this love.....”
This love is shed abroad (according to the context) in the hearts of those serving Christ and suffering for him. You will never experience this fullness of love as long as you are on the sidelines of soul-winning and service
The emotional difference (in minor leagues) between sitting on the bench and actually playing ball
God is Commanding
A Commanding promise
Acts 1:8 KJV 1900
8 But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.
If the Holy Ghost is upon you, you will be a witness....I promise
An imperative suggestion (he told some to follow him and they didn’t - the rich young ruler)
Matthew 4:19 KJV 1900
19 And he saith unto them, Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.
An demanding command
Mark 5:19 KJV 1900
19 Howbeit Jesus suffered him not, but saith unto him, Go home to thy friends, and tell them how great things the Lord hath done for thee, and hath had compassion on thee.
Matthew 5:19 KJV 1900
19 Whosoever therefore shall break one of these least commandments, and shall teach men so, he shall be called the least in the kingdom of heaven: but whosoever shall do and teach them, the same shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.
Luke 14:23 KJV 1900
23 And the lord said unto the servant, Go out into the highways and hedges, and compel them to come in, that my house may be filled.
Our position is urging us
2 Corinthians 5:20 KJV 1900
20 Now then we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God did beseech you by us: we pray you in Christ’s stead, be ye reconciled to God.
Ambassador - A minister of the highest rank employed by one prince or state at the court of another, to manage the public concerns of his own prince or state. He represents the power and dignity of his sovereign.
A CHEMICAL ENGINEER SAVED ON AN AIRPLANE A few years ago I was flying to Denver, Colorado. A very fine-looking, middle-aged businessman was sitting next to me. Soon I initiated a conversation. After a brief chat I inquired as to his business. He said, "I am a chemical engineer," and then he asked me if I knew anything about chemistry. I replied that I knew a little. (I know that H20 is water and that I had dropped chemistry in college for the safety of the building and the tranquility of the faculty. Since that is a little, I told him that I knew a little about chemistry!) He then asked what I thought about a new formula. I told him that I felt that since the formula was new, we should not make a hasty decision concerning it. He was very impressed with that statement and told me that he felt the same way. He said it was refreshing to find a layman who knew something about chemistry. He then called off another formula even more complicated than the first and asked my opinion about that one. I replied that there were probably some good things about that formula but there might be some bad things also and that probably we should be for the good and against the bad. Still not realizing my ignorance, he complimented me again because of the good grasp I seemed to have on chemistry. Now that I had succeeded in making my ignorance sound like knowledge, he then asked me concerning my business. Suddenly I found myself telling him that I was an ambassador. This really startled him. He sat up in his seat and said, "Sir, I did not realize that I was in such important company. Do you mean that your citizenship is in a foreign country?" Chuckling under my breath, I answered affirmatively. (-"For our conversation (citizenship)is in Heaven; from whence also we look for the Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ. ") Then he asked, "Do you really represent a king in America?" Nothing could be closer to the truth than that, so I said, "Yes, I do." Once again he sat up in his seat, startled and impressed. "With your accent," he said, "I am surprised." Then I assured him that I had been in this country representing the King for many years and had picked up many of the characteristics of this country (far too many, I was afraid). Then he asked the question: "Who is the king and what is the country?" I said happily, "The country is Heaven and the King is Jesus," and in a few minutes he, too, was an ambassador from my Country with faith in my King. A report came to me several weeks after this experience that this chemical engineer had joined a Baptist church in the state of Michigan.

5. Responsibility is pressing us
He then asked what I thought about a new formula. I told him that I felt that since the formula was new, we should not make a hasty decision concerning it. He was very impressed with that statement and told me that he felt the same way. He said it was refreshing to find a layman who knew something about chemistry.
Romans 1:14 KJV 1900
14 I am debtor both to the Greeks, and to the Barbarians; both to the wise, and to the unwise.
He then called off another formula even more complicated than the first and asked my opinion about that one. I replied that there were probably some good things about that formula but there might be some bad things also and that probably we should be for the good and against the bad. When did Paul acquire this debt?
Answer: When he got saved
Now that I had succeeded in making my ignorance sound like knowledge, he then asked me concerning my business. Suddenly I found myself telling him that I was an ambassador. This really startled him. He sat up in his seat and said, "Sir, I did not realize that I was in such important company. Do you mean that your citizenship is in a foreign country?"
Acts 9:15 KJV 1900
15 But the Lord said unto him, Go thy way: for he is a chosen vessel unto me, to bear my name before the Gentiles, and kings, and the children of Israel:
Chuckling under my breath, I answered affirmatively. (-"For our conversation (citizenship)is in Heaven; from whence also we look for the Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ. ")
6. Jesus is challenging us
Then he asked, "Do you really represent a king in America?"
John 15:1 KJV 1900
1 I am the true vine, and my Father is the husbandman.
Nothing could be closer to the truth than that, so I said, "Yes, I do."
John 15:1 KJV 1900
1 I am the true vine, and my Father is the husbandman.
John 15:2 KJV 1900
2 Every branch in me that beareth not fruit he taketh away: and every branch that beareth fruit, he purgeth it, that it may bring forth more fruit.
John 15:5 KJV 1900
5 I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing.
Do you hear the challenge?
Fruit, more fruit, much fruit.
Verse 2 is frightful, but look at
Luke 13:6–9 KJV 1900
6 He spake also this parable; A certain man had a fig tree planted in his vineyard; and he came and sought fruit thereon, and found none. 7 Then said he unto the dresser of his vineyard, Behold, these three years I come seeking fruit on this fig tree, and find none: cut it down; why cumbereth it the ground? 8 And he answering said unto him, Lord, let it alone this year also, till I shall dig about it, and dung it: 9 And if it bear fruit, well: and if not, then after that thou shalt cut it down.
Illustration:
My dad’s non-bearing apple tree and the plan....don’t chop down right away.
If God is dealing with you about fruit bearing....hear him, yield to him....allow him to prune you so that you may bring forth much fruit to his glory.
Once again he sat up in his seat, startled and impressed. "With your accent," he said, "I am surprised."
Then I assured him that I had been in this country representing the King for many years and had picked up many of the characteristics of this country (far too many, I was afraid).

I said happily, "The country is Heaven and the King is Jesus," and in a few minutes he, too, was an ambassador from my Country with faith in my King.
