Identity

We are going to continue our conversation about idenity and what yoru identity is
We are gettig to the meat of why you need to be thinking ab out your idenityt and why you should be aware of what God says abot you
This week will open that door to understand what Christ has done but also to understand the world around you and people around you will influence you
Some will infuence you for good, like the adults here are trying to do
Some will seek to lead you astray
Somw will seek to have you join them in their sin
Som will seek to convince you so that they might use you to accomplish something
Someone might lie to you to convince you to do what they want
People are evil and will do evil to you and you will do evil things to others
Solet’s see what the Bible has to say so that you would know what is right and wrhat is wrong to better deal with the world you will live in
Last week we loked at who Christ is
We memorized a important verse concerning God’s creation
Anyone remember and ?
Genesis 1:1 ESV
In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.
Genesis 1:26–27 ESV
Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. And let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over the livestock and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.” So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them.
God made man and woman in his image
to accurately represent Him on earth
1st man and woman sinned by disobeying
They were cursed and cast out of Gods presence, Gods garden, and from Gods created purpose for humanity
Creation and then Fall
Last week we talked about Redemption
How we are all fallen due to Adam and Eve and our own sins
We all are hopelessly lost in our sins, dead to reality, and guilty before God
But God because He is good, compassionate and full of neverfailing love… He got involved in our helpless estate
He came and became just like you and me, yet without sin
He Took humanity, Jesus, and fulfilled our created role as representives of God on earth
He fulfilled God’s moral expetations of all of us and gave His life
Why did He give His life on the cross? To pay for our sins and do away with that debt
Only He could do it… Our sin is so great that we nor anyone else can simply fix the problem or die for their sins
Our sin is so great that the Creator and sustainor of the universe must come to give His life
Colossians 1:15–17 ESV
He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation. For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him. And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together.
We are going to investigate that some more today
Creation, Fall, Redemption, Glory
The most amazing thing about what God does for us in Christ Jesus through salvation is the promise of glory
The Last strctural catagory to view God’s hand upon redemptionve history is Glory
This is the amazing reality that the child of God is the child of God and not the child of death, satan, evil no longer
If we are in Christ, Jesus has worked powerfully in you to redeem you/forgive you of sin
His work was not to get you to neutral
He has given life to bring us into His family
He doesn’t make new believers slaves
He doesn’t make us to do the dirtiest work so He doesn’t have to
But God elevates the redeemed to sonship
He brings us into His place of home
He takes us, cleans us up, and puts us at a seat of honor
He gives us a new reality, life eternal with Him
What a great truth and priveledge God gives us
If you are a Christian you need to be convicned of this for here you are safe and those around you should want you to know this to be truth and I will not tell you that anything the Bible says is not truth and trustworthy
But, as a Christian, the world around you and things you have been told, are not wanting you to know God but be decieved
Colossians 2:1–5 ESV
For I want you to know how great a struggle I have for you and for those at Laodicea and for all who have not seen me face to face, that their hearts may be encouraged, being knit together in love, to reach all the riches of full assurance of understanding and the knowledge of God’s mystery, which is Christ, in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge. I say this in order that no one may delude you with plausible arguments. For though I am absent in body, yet I am with you in spirit, rejoicing to see your good order and the firmness of your faith in Christ.
Colossians 2:1
Paul says he is writing so they might know him and be stout in the faith
They may be encouraged, knit together in love, to know fully Christ in them
Colossians 2:4 ESV
I say this in order that no one may delude you with plausible arguments.
Colossians 2:5 ESV
For though I am absent in body, yet I am with you in spirit, rejoicing to see your good order and the firmness of your faith in Christ.
So that no one might decieve them
And they would stand firm in their faith
And they would stand firm in their faith
Colossians 2:5 ESV
For though I am absent in body, yet I am with you in spirit, rejoicing to see your good order and the firmness of your faith in Christ.
Colossians 2:
Many things will sound right and true, but have slight truths… things that when you get down to the details doesn’t make sense
Many world religieons have elements of truth in them but their system is broken and built on false things
Many teachings in the world sound good but are partial or down right false when pressed and put against what the Bible teaches and what Christ represents.
Have you heard anything that sounded good but when pushed or applied crumbles?
Colossians 2:6–7 ESV
Therefore, as you received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in him, rooted and built up in him and established in the faith, just as you were taught, abounding in thanksgiving.
Colossians 2:
As you recieved Christ; what does that mean?
How do we receive Christ?
We call upon His name as we heard the gospel and trusting in His word and promise; faith
Romans 10:13 ESV
For “everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.”
Romans 10:17 ESV
So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ.
We call on Christ and have faith in His word
As we received Him, walk in Him
Imagery of walking to describe the life of faith
walking doesn’t get anywhere fast
slow and steady, doesn’t take a lot of effort but is consistent and concerted effort towards a goal
Marathons are kinda like this… keep on going!
“rooted”
Trees are awesome!
“built up” foundation of a building
Are you solidly grounded in Christ?
How long does the Christian life last?
Colossians 2:8-
Colossians 2:8–15 ESV
See to it that no one takes you captive by philosophy and empty deceit, according to human tradition, according to the elemental spirits of the world, and not according to Christ. For in him the whole fullness of deity dwells bodily, and you have been filled in him, who is the head of all rule and authority. In him also you were circumcised with a circumcision made without hands, by putting off the body of the flesh, by the circumcision of Christ, having been buried with him in baptism, in which you were also raised with him through faith in the powerful working of God, who raised him from the dead. And you, who were dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, God made alive together with him, having forgiven us all our trespasses, by canceling the record of debt that stood against us with its legal demands. This he set aside, nailing it to the cross. He disarmed the rulers and authorities and put them to open shame, by triumphing over them in him.
We will not finish this today
Take the passage with you and work through it!
May “no one take you captive”...
What does V.8 mean by takes you captive?
Does not mean bound or contained
More severe terms used
Paul is saying people will try and teach you something that will carry you away as a slave
If not careful, or aware, you will be taught a philosphy and human tradition that will enslave you by carrying you away in teaching
Happens a lot at Philosophy 101 in college
Be convinced, be rooted and grounded in Christ and What He has done for you!
This teaching is in opposition to Christ
If something you are taught does not match with Scripture then it is not true… This is a fundamental decision we must all make of who we will trust.
Will we trust God and His gift of Scripture and side with what it says, even if we are not vocal about our rejection of what is taught elsehere
Or are we going to jetison the Scripture for the teaching some important teacher, coach, person, parent, or friend tells us about and we desperatly want their affection so we do and believe
Alway test with the Word!
What teaching does God give us to combat the false truths
All that is Divine and Godly is in Christ Jesus
Colossians 2:9 ESV
For in him the whole fullness of deity dwells bodily,
Colossians 2:9
There will be people and groups that teach if you do this, give this, believe this then you will have some part of god, be part of god, experience some spiritual presence
You have probably heard as much from somewhere
Know that it is not true
There might be some expereince from thsi or that
There may be some high, true!
But it is fleeting and brings ultimate death, becuase it takes you from Christ, slowly draws you away
Instead you have been filled with Christ
Colossians 2:10 ESV
and you have been filled in him, who is the head of all rule and authority.
Instead of being fearful of the false teachers around, be aware and careful, and realize that CHrist is in you
You are filled with Him
And the Christ that is our Savior is no push over
He is no light weight that we have to be afraid if He can handle our problems
He is head and ruler of all!
Christ rules all!
Christ abides with His followers so that His authority over all things is with them.
2. Christ accomplishes metaphysical redemption
Colossians 2:11–12 ESV
In him also you were circumcised with a circumcision made without hands, by putting off the body of the flesh, by the circumcision of Christ, having been buried with him in baptism, in which you were also raised with him through faith in the powerful working of God, who raised him from the dead.
Circumcision is a sign of being in the family
It is a proof of being part of God’s kingdom
Think of it that way when you see it
We could break it down and teach through it but it might not be enjoyable for some of you
Colossians 2:
Colossians 2:13–15 ESV
And you, who were dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, God made alive together with him, having forgiven us all our trespasses, by canceling the record of debt that stood against us with its legal demands. This he set aside, nailing it to the cross. He disarmed the rulers and authorities and put them to open shame, by triumphing over them in him.
He says we are made part of God’s kingdom and Christ when we follow Him in a death like His. in baptism
Baptism is important
It does not save but is a picutre of what God is doing through Christ in our lives
We should be baptized
Thorugh the powerful working of God to raise sinners from the dead
Has God raised you from the dead in Christ?
Has God brought about life?
Do you understand that?
THis is what has happened to you if you are in Christ!
You have been sinful and dead but He has forgiven you, cancelling the debt to forgive sins
His sacrifice on the cross did two things in this passage
It cancelled the debt due our sin
It disarmed the rulers and authorities of this world
Sin and Satan is no more in Christ
