Fear or Faith

Jesus will challenge us.  (14:28-29a)
So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.
3B.      We must obey Jesus in spite of the storm.  (14:29b)
Faith is our venturing everything on God's faithfulness.
Ø      When Peter walked on the water, he was really walking on the Word.  He believed God and did something about it.
Ø      The Bible is a book to be believed.  We need to start obeying the Lord.  We like the safety of the boat.  So we sit and watch the Lord pass us by.
4B.      We must walk with Jesus throughout the storm.  (14:30)
Simon Peter did not drown and neither will you.
Ø      Simon may not have walked very far but he walked further than the rest of the disciples.
Ø      It is safer to be on the waves with Jesus than in the boat without Him!
Ø      Simon faltered because he looked at his circumstance and not his savior.
Ø      We are commanded to keep our eyes of faith firmly fixed on Jesus.
As you have therefore received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in Him,
Jesus will not let you drown.
“Peter was nearer his Lord when he was sinking than when he was walking.”  (Spurgeon)
The steps of a good man are ordered by the LORD, And He delights in his way.
Ø      Peter got back to the ship one of two ways... he walked or Jesus carried him.
5B.      We must worship Jesus after the storm (14:31‑33)
Why did Jesus walk on the water?
Ø      So the disciples would know He was sufficient for them.
Ø      The storm was a highway that brought Jesus to them!  The problem was only a vehicle that brought Jesus to them!
Ø      It brought Jesus in reality to them (14:33) "truly you are the Son of God."
new - Sermon below
Following the amazing miracles that jesus had just preformed of feeding five thousand the disciples departed across the sea of Galilee. Jesus had just dismissed the crowd and went up to the top of the mountion to pray. That same night about 3 or 4 miles out in the lake a storm hit the sea and the disciples. and when the storm hit the disciples begin to get afraid. but right in the mist of the storm the disciples seen jesus walking on the water. the disciples did not believe that this was jesus. they thought he was an evil spirit or a ghost. but jesus had to reassure them. he said it is i don't be afraid. have you ever been in a storm in your life and jesus came right on time. i wasn't there but i can almost imagine these the fear on the disciples face. peter said jesus if its you then let me walk on water with you. jesus said come and peter walked out on faith. peter was walking on the water until he took his eyes of jesus and begin to lose his faith. he start paying attention to the storm and begin to get afraid
Thats what we do sometimes. we have faith and is on Jesus side until we get hit with a storm. when the storm come we take our eye of f jesus we are going to fall every time. sometime jesus puts stumbling blocks trails, and tribulations in our way to test our faith. we have to keep our eye on jesus. we have to know that jesus will not let us down. sometimes jesus allows us to lose a love one to see how strong our faith is. we might be going thru our storm now but we have to continue to have faith and keep our eye on jesus. soon all storms will be over. we have to keep walking on the water and don't get afraid of the storm. our storms can be anything but we have to stay strong. we have to hold on just a little while longer. we have to know that jesus is going to be with us. hold on when we going thru a hard time. hold on when we begin to sink. hold on when the devil tries to trick us. hold on when we sick. hold on when we are up. hold on when we are down. gotta keep running this christen race. hold on hold on hold on in the mist of the storms. hold on when the bills collectors are at your door. hold on when people start talking about you hold on when your storm hit. hold on. cant be like peter and lose faith. gotta know that soon and very soon everything will be alright cant take our eye off jesus. we gotta have faith that jesus can do everything but fail
hold on when it seem like you cant hold anymore. hold on when you upset. when you lose a love one. jesus will be there for you. hold on just a little while longer. hold on when it seems you cant do nothing but fail. hold on when the devils tryna get you to let go. trust me. it will pay off. hold on just a little while longer.

Where will your anchor be during the storms of life?
Powerful storms were nothing new for the Sea of Galilee. Actually the Sea of Galilee is an inland lake about six miles wide and twelve miles long. The sea is positioned several hundred feet below the level of the Mediterranean Sea and is known for being very warm. But when the cold air comes down off Mt. Herman and the dark clouds make their way to Galilee, no one on the sea is exempt from the fury. Even in Bible times, the Sea of Galilee was known for its tumultuous weather. In our verses today the storm came quickly and was enough to cause several life-long fishermen to fear for their lives.
When we look at the storm in this story, we are reminded of the fact that the storms of our lives often come upon us quickly and unexpectedly. We each experience trials, tragedies, and devastations at some point in our lives.
Our country has experienced sudden storms and trials. From the Vietnam War that claimed many young lives to the bombings in Oklahoma City to the devastation of the attacks on September 11, storms and trials have hit our nation through the years. There is no way to prevent such trials or to deal with them. The only hope we have during the storms of life is in Jesus Christ.
We can all attest that today we either have storm clouds over us, clouds that have just passed by us, or storm clouds on the horizon. According to the Word of God, the storms of life are inevitable. But how we handle the storms determines the outcome. Will we succumb to the trials, or will we look to Christ for help and grow through them?
The only way a ship survives a storm is by setting down its anchor on a firm foundation. When the winds blow and the sea threatens to carry the ship out to sea, the only security the sailors have is by securing their anchor in solid ground.
Even so, where we place our anchor will determine whether we survive the storm. Is your anchor in your career, social status, possessions, or abilities? Or have you anchored yourself on God and His Word?
When you are anchored in Christ, He will be able to still the storm in your life. While sometimes God allows us to go through trials to grow us, He can also take away the trials in our lives if we seek Him. When the storm clouds begin to roll in, we should immediately seek His will in the matter. Whether God’s will is for you to endure the trial or for it to be removed, anchoring yourself in Christ and seeking His will is always the best plan of action.
Are you under a storm cloud? Can you see one coming on the horizon? Rather than tying down the boat and seeking to secure it on man-made docks, anchor your life in Christ. Spend time with Him. Seek His will in the matter and let Him have full control of your ship. The only way to survive a storm is by seeking refuge in Him today.

Matthew 14:30–36 ESV
But when he saw the wind, he was afraid, and beginning to sink he cried out, “Lord, save me.” Jesus immediately reached out his hand and took hold of him, saying to him, “O you of little faith, why did you doubt?” And when they got into the boat, the wind ceased. And those in the boat worshiped him, saying, “Truly you are the Son of God.” And when they had crossed over, they came to land at Gennesaret. And when the men of that place recognized him, they sent around to all that region and brought to him all who were sick and implored him that they might only touch the fringe of his garment. And as many as touched it were made well.
When he saw the challenge or obstacle - seeings is one of our outside sensors that allows for new input.
He was afraid - outside inputs are what starts the process of what we think. What we put in our minds is how we prepare for new levels of intimacy

To build our faith it is a discipline to put the correct input in our minds.

I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.
