Don’t argue with Paul

Paul in his missionary journeys was not only preaching the message of salvation through Jesus, but was establishing the doctrines of the church. (what to believe and why). He was also trying to unite the church. Jews and Gentiles.
Gentiles - what you believed was false.
Jews - What you believed was true, but it was only part of the picture. It was a foreshadowing was what was to come.
What is a good argument?
Martye doesn’t like to argue, I love to argue.
In my house to win an argument use to mean you got the other person to get mad, say screw it, and walk off.
The goal of Paul’s argument is to bring people together, not apart.
Pauls qualifications to argue
Logic (Identification, non-contradiction, the excluded middle)
I remember a girl in college that gave a speech arguing that Christianity was true, but her only source of material was the Bible and she spent no time establishing the truth of the Bible.
b. Knowledge of the material
Argue about chain tensioner in a primary.
I don’t have the knowledge of the material.
Paul was a well educated Jew who knew the OT well.
c. Paul was filled with the Holy Spirit
If you want to make an argument about mechanics of the HD twin cam it would be nice to have Engineering Chief Earl Werner as an advisor
And if you are going to make an argument about who Jesus was, is and is to come, the Holy Spirit inside you making the arguments is the best way to go about it.

Paul’s premise

Romans 3:28 NASB95
For we maintain that a man is justified by faith apart from works of the Law.
Romans 3
Galatians 2:16 NASB95
nevertheless knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the Law but through faith in Christ Jesus, even we have believed in Christ Jesus, so that we may be justified by faith in Christ and not by the works of the Law; since by the works of the Law no flesh will be justified.
Galations 2:16
Romans 4:1–5 NASB95
What then shall we say that Abraham, our forefather according to the flesh, has found? For if Abraham was justified by works, he has something to boast about, but not before God. For what does the Scripture say? “Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness.” Now to the one who works, his wage is not credited as a favor, but as what is due. But to the one who does not work, but believes in Him who justifies the ungodly, his faith is credited as righteousness,
Romans 4:1-
Justified: its a legal term. Vindicated. More than not guilty.
Unashamed
Unappoligetic
His argument
Romans 4:1 NASB95
What then shall we say that Abraham, our forefather according to the flesh, has found?
Paul is going straight to the big guns. If you want to convince a bunch of Jews that you are right, then you show them that Abraham believes what you believe.
He is the Godfather God established Father of many nations.
To the Jews he is William Harley and Arther Davidson rolled into one.
Romans 4:2–5 NASB95
For if Abraham was justified by works, he has something to boast about, but not before God. For what does the Scripture say? “Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness.” Now to the one who works, his wage is not credited as a favor, but as what is due. But to the one who does not work, but believes in Him who justifies the ungodly, his faith is credited as righteousness,
Genesis:
Genesis 15:6 NASB95
Then he believed in the Lord; and He reckoned it to him as righteousness.
The He was not Abraham yet. It was Abram
God will save you where you are today. You don’t get cleaned up and then come to Jesus.

Salvation is not God’s payback

Romans 4:4 NASB95
Now to the one who works, his wage is not credited as a favor, but as what is due.
Works salvation:
Hinduism
Budism
Islam
Judaism had become so:
Matthew 15:7–9 NASB95
“You hypocrites, rightly did Isaiah prophesy of you: This people honors Me with their lips, But their heart is far away from Me. But in vain do they worship Me, Teaching as doctrines the precepts of men.’ ”
Some Churches have become a works salvation
Ask someone why they should go to heaven:
Matthew 15:9 NASB95
But in vain do they worship Me, Teaching as doctrines the precepts of men.’ ”
Matthew 15:7
Good person,
nice to others,
feed the poor,
go to church.
Matthew 7:22–23 NASB95
“Many will say to Me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in Your name, and in Your name cast out demons, and in Your name perform many miracles?’ “And then I will declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness.’

1. reduces complaints: feel like they are owed.
2. Demonstrates salvation
2. Demonstrates Salvation
Romans 4:5 NASB95
But to the one who does not work, but believes in Him who justifies the ungodly, his faith is credited as righteousness,
Galatians 2:16 NASB95
nevertheless knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the Law but through faith in Christ Jesus, even we have believed in Christ Jesus, so that we may be justified by faith in Christ and not by the works of the Law; since by the works of the Law no flesh will be justified.
Romans 5:
Ephesians 2:8–9 NASB95
For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; not as a result of works, so that no one may boast.
Galations 2:16
What about works?
James 2:14 NASB95
What use is it, my brethren, if someone says he has faith but he has no works? Can that faith save him?
