WHAT IS HOLINESS

1 Peter 1:14–16 NASB95
As obedient children, do not be conformed to the former lusts which were yours in your ignorance, but like the Holy One who called you, be holy yourselves also in all your behavior; because it is written, “You shall be holy, for I am holy.”
1 Peter
1 Peter 1:15–16 NASB95
but like the Holy One who called you, be holy yourselves also in all your behavior; because it is written, “You shall be holy, for I am holy.”

God’s Holiness

Holiness is an attribute of God.
Notice that God is called “the Holy One” and He says, “You shall be holy for I am holy”.
Holiness is an attribute of God. — It’s who He is. ()
Holiness means absolute perfection — without even a trace of sin
God’s holiness extends throughout His entire being. (His love is holy, His mercy is holy, even His anger and wrath are holy)

Man’s Holiness

Look again at the last part of verse 16. God says, “You shall be holy for I am holy”.
Holiness is a command — not an option.
Well, how can we be perfect? — We can’t — Not in the flesh.
So, the first step to holiness is salvation — which sets us apart from the world and unto God.
When we’re saved we receive what you might call Positional Holiness. God sees us as holy through our relationship with Christ. (ALL TURN TO )
Peter’s audience wasn’t perfect, yet he calls them a “chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, and a people for God’s own possession”. We are chosen and set apart for God’s own use and glory.
Next comes what you might call Practical Holiness/Sanctification (Sanctified is a synonym for holy and Sanctification is the process of growing in holiness). — Practical Holiness is progressive holiness. It develops over time (). — Now, look back at .
Notice that Peter says, “As obedient children, do not be conformed to the former lusts which were yours in you ignorance”.
Practical Holiness manifests itself in how we live our lives.
When we were saved we were freed from the power of sin in our lives ().
We can not and must not “practice sin” or live a lifestyle of sin (, ).
We may fail on occasion but it’s not a way of life for us ().
Well, how does one progress in holiness?
We grow in holiness through the truth of God’s Word. (All turn to , )
The last step of holiness is Final Holiness/Sanctification. — This is when the Lord returns or we die and go to Heaven (whichever comes first) and are finally saved from the presence of sin.
We grow in holiness through the truth of God’s Word. (All turn to , )
