Last week, we heard about the source of Jesus’ authority
Overview
This week, we will look at two parables, both about sons.
The first is a parable about 2 sons
The second is about the son of a vineyard owner
We will have 2 points in each parable
Next week we will go over the third parable in this set of three.
As further introduction, I want to talk about a translation issue in the first Parable
Basically, 2 sons, Father requests each son to work, either
The older son says no but repents and goes; The second son says yes but does nothing. Who performs the father’s will? The first.
The older son says yes but does nothing; The second son says no but repents and goes. Who performs the father’s will? The younger, or the latter, or the second.

#3 is basically illogical
both #1 and #2 are valid
#2 seems to make the most sense
Exposition One
“What do you think? A man had two sons. And he went to the first and said, ‘Son, go and work in the vineyard today.’
And he answered, ‘I will not,’ but afterward he changed his mind and went.
And he went to the other son and said the same. And he answered, ‘I go, sir,’ but did not go.
Which of the two did the will of his father?” They said, “The first.” Jesus said to them, “Truly, I say to you, the tax collectors and the prostitutes go into the kingdom of God before you.
Explanation,
Reminds me of when Nathan tells David, “You are that man!”
Obviously the son who obeyed is the one in the right
The leaders of Israel, and by extension, the nation as a whole are like the son who loudly and proudly says “YES!” They are God’s people. Yet they don’t obey. They don’t follow God.
The Gentiles who follow Jesus are like the son who said no, realized that they were wrong, repented and obeyed.
The leaders recognize that Jesus is talking about them (vs. 45)

“Hear another parable. There was a master of a house who planted a vineyard and put a fence around it and dug a winepress in it and built a tower and leased it to tenants, and went into another country.
Jesus addresses another parable to the Jewish rulers and people/crowds
Jesus is clearly referencing Isaiah 5:1-7 and Psalm 80:6-16
Let me sing for my beloved
my love song concerning his vineyard:
My beloved had a vineyard
on a very fertile hill.
He dug it and cleared it of stones,
and planted it with choice vines;
he built a watchtower in the midst of it,
and hewed out a wine vat in it;
and he looked for it to yield grapes,
but it yielded wild grapes.
And now, O inhabitants of Jerusalem
and men of Judah,
judge between me and my vineyard.
What more was there to do for my vineyard,
that I have not done in it?
When I looked for it to yield grapes,
why did it yield wild grapes?
And now I will tell you
what I will do to my vineyard.
I will remove its hedge,
and it shall be devoured;
I will break down its wall,
and it shall be trampled down.
I will make it a waste;
it shall not be pruned or hoed,

and the men of Judah

Give an overview of the story
So the “master of the house” (Land Owner) here is clearly God the Father
The vineyard is Israel (the land, not the people)
The tenants are the people of Israel, especially the leaders.
The servants are the prophets, Especially John the Baptist
The Son is Jesus Messiah

When the season for fruit drew near, he sent his servants to the tenants to get his fruit.
And the tenants took his servants and beat one, killed another, and stoned another.
Again he sent other servants, more than the first. And they did the same to them.
But when the tenants saw the son, they said to themselves, ‘This is the heir. Come, let us kill him and have his inheritance.’
And they took him and threw him out of the vineyard and killed him.

They said to him, “He will put those wretches to a miserable death and let out the vineyard to other tenants who will give him the fruits in their seasons.”
Jesus said to them, “Have you never read in the Scriptures:
“ ‘The stone that the builders rejected
has become the cornerstone;
this was the Lord’s doing,
and it is marvelous in our eyes’?
Therefore I tell you, the kingdom of God will be taken away from you and given to a people producing its fruits.
And the one who falls on this stone will be broken to pieces; and when it falls on anyone, it will crush him.”
When the chief priests and the Pharisees heard his parables, they perceived that he was speaking about them.
And although they were seeking to arrest him, they feared the crowds, because they held him to be a prophet.
